How To Play Like 10 Iconic Shredders
Added 2024-01-23 16:31:51 +0000 UTCSo the vast majority of lessons I make for the School are aimed at players of varying difficulties, but occasionally (when time allows it) I like to create some bonus lessons aimed at a specific difficulty. We've been covering a lot of intermediate and fundamental stuff recently so I figured it was time for something a bit more advanced!
Today we're gonna be focussing on how to replicate the styles of 10 of the most iconic shred guitarists of all time! I've composed an 8 bar solo for each of these guitarists, comprising some of their signature licks and harmonic choices.
Even if you're not an advanced guitarist there's still a hell of a lot of valuable information here that you can apply to your own playing (and of course you can jam along with the slower backing track like always).

I'll have to spend a bit more time listening to mr. Gilbert ✌️

2024-01-25 16:08:42 +0000 UTCYeah, the fact that it's string skipping and not a straight arpeggio is the idea! It's a part of Paul Gilbert's signature style. Of course you can play it sweeping instead if you want but it kinda defeats the purpose of the exercise!

2024-01-25 15:21:24 +0000 UTCIn the Gilbert solo is there an advantage to skipping between the e&g strings? Bar5 (E14-17-14 G18-14 D16...) I'm finding it easier to hit the C# on the B (making it e14-17b14g14d16) and it keeps it like a chord shape. Same for the rest of the bar on the 21fret run. Is it a stylistic choice? Since it turns it into a little sweep instead of an alt picking line - is it just not how he'd play something like this? For me it's more intuitive to use the B string in terms of simply getting to the notes. Hard to communicate it this way I hope it makes sense.
