1 Minute Workout: Alternate Picking

So with the holidays upon us (and more time to practice) I thought I'd use this as an opportunity to give you guys some fun things to keep you busy! Every few days over the next couple of weeks I'm gonna be uploading short "1 Minute Workouts", each focusing on a specific technique.

Seeing as we've been spending a lot of time on that recently, I'm starting the series off today with good ol' alternate picking!

This exercise features some cool super fun alternate picking licks of increasing difficulty; starting with basic 8th notes and going right through to some insane 16th note triplets! Along the way we also cover cross-picking, as well as the theory involved in this exercise (such as the incredibly prolific ascending-4ths chord progression).

Good luck and don't forget to share your progress with everyone in the Discord server!

Where I consistently find I get stuck is when switching rhythms. In level 2 when the triplets kick in I just fall apart and can't do the mental part of switching from "1 and 2 and..." to "3 2 3, 4 2 3" Does anyone have any advice?

I think level 3 is easier for me 😂. Not Cause of technic but it's easier to remember than level 2.

who else love when Bradley explains a bit of music theory behind the tabs, that really helps me understand the composition better. And believe it or not, i finally understand a practical use of the circle of fifths (i never really got it)

Hi Bradley, Thanks for following up on this. I posted my question on the Discord server. My username is Guitar Sensei. Thank you!

Guitar Sensei

Hey Brian! Are you on the Discord server? Would be much easier to demonstrate this with a short video if you ask this on one of the feedback channels!

Hi Bradley, which picking angle do you use for level five? I'm stuck at 75 BPM on the last line starting on the F chord. I've been using an upward pickslant, but I just rewatched your pickslanting video, and I'm wondering if I should be using a downward pickslant because up is the last stroke before switching strings. (I hope that makes sense.) Any advice?

Been practicing for a few weeks now, just at level 1 lol. How did you compose this song? It has a classical feel to it, I dig it.

Good luck dude!

thanks mate! i'm trying it lets see

You got this Shawn!!

Bradley Hall

Man level 5 kicking my butt 😂 gonna get it soon though!

Hey man, good job on getting the first 2 levels down! There's no real shortcut to improving hand sync, it's literally just about practicing things at a comfortable tempo and then SLOWLY pushing faster and faster ensuring that it remains tight and consistent. So find a tempo that level 3 is comfortable for you and use that as your starting point, increasing the tempo slowly. Good luck!

Hi Bradley! as a beginner guitar player i could have accomplished level 1 and 2 after practicing with two backing tracks. but now i'm on level 3 for several days and it's too difficult to synchonize both hands. seems like my right hand is 0.1 seconds faster all the time. what should i do?

mathic06

hey! great exercise. i'm happy that i've subscribed, seems like there are some great content. could you please make a video about how to get faster like in level 3 and above?

mathic06

Hi Anthony! It sounds like one of 2 things: either you're using way too much force when picking OR you're not gripping the pick tight enough. What would be a big help is if you were to record a short clip of you playing to demonstrate the problem and share it on the Discord server! Would love to see that so I can continue to help you. Cheers man!

Cheers Amanda!

Hi Bradley, thanks for this great workout ! I try to improve my alternate picking technique but my pick keeps sliding backwards into my hand when I play fast licks and I don't know how to fix it. I use small jazz III picks. Do you have any ideas ? Thanks again 👍

Anthony Alfonsi

Hi Bradley, I subscribed to your patreon. I can't wait to practice this lesson! Thank you!

Amanda Buenrostro

More coming soon!

Bradley Hall

Love this idea where you mix up a lot of techniques in one lesson. More of this, please!

Flemming Lund

You don’t mess around 💪 cheers mate 👍

Anthony

Ignore my previous reply - just uploaded a slower backing track! Good idea

Bradley Hall

@bradley it could be helpful to have a slower tempo backing track for some of your stuff mate, maybe 75% speed, i myself struggle on the triplets to keep up lol

Anthony

Perfect, hope you'll enjoy them Dominik!

Bradley Hall

Awesome! Can’t wait for the next technique workouts. That’s what I was looking for. Thanks a lot 🤘🏻
