Difficult Situation

I'm unsure if I should watch the original films before this one. I'm not sure if there are backstories that I would miss or if there are certain memes or something that wouldn't make sense.
I don't want people to start saying "he never abides by the poll" because it's more complicated than that.
What do you guys think?
