This was such a spectacular episode! Just the way it was written and the ending “she’s alive!!” is crazy!! Also, absolutely loved that one of the last things Helly heard from Natalie was that Helena views her innie “like a sister”. As we know, the video Helena made to her inne said that she wasn’t even a person. That callback was peak! For all of them, I think Helly learning she’s Helena Eagen was the harshest reveal given how much Helly hates Lumon. What I have realized watching this show a second time is all the small verbal cues that come up that mirror the outie inside Lumon. For example, when Mark outside was talking to his date, he said Gemma loves things equally. That’s what Ms. Casey always says needs to happen in the wellness sessions when she lists the attributes of the outie to the innie. There’s also the Eagen quote outside Ms. Casey’s office that says Lumon is in your veins, and later Mark’s sister says “I guess you still have her (Gemma) in your veins.” It also explains Cobel’s obsession with wanting to know Mark’s mental state and if he’s mentioned “seeing” his wife around. Also, doing a deep comparison of the innie versus outie is super interesting because they’re not all that different. It’s literally a switch between the two that makes them pursue different paths. For example, Irving innie is a die-hard Eagan fan who was strict and rigid about the manifesto. His outie was a soldier who used to have regimented lifestyle with strict adherence to army-base rules. There’s also the shared loyalty towards the place they come from (soldier to country; devout to belief). Also, Irving jokingly said “the mission is the absolute most important” which missions given to soldiers are literally life or death. For Helly, she was always extreme and quite brutal in her personality. She used violence as her first act as Helly, haha. She’s tough and unrelenting in her pursuit to leave Lumon. Going as far as to kill herself which she did not out of defeat but out of spite. She knew her outtie would wake up in the elevator and wanted her to experience that. And as we’ve seen, Helena is equally as stubborn and lacks a lot of empathy so that Severance can succeed. Mark innie and outie I think have the most in common. From the flow of the conversation he was having in this episode as innie to outie mark’s sister, they are comfortable with each other as if Mark had no change at all. The difference between the two was Mark’s sadness over his wife. They both strive to do the right thing. We don’t know much at Dylan’s outie yet, so can’t do much of a comparison there so it’ll be interesting to see if we do get more.
