There's an idea I had that I'd love for them to do: End each movie with a shot on Jake's eyes so that at the end you can "sum up" Jake's character's evolution with every end shot of every movie. For now both movie end with a shot on his eyes bearing a different emotion. Loved that movie. It could just be a documentary on another planet's ecosystem, I'd still love it, give me fish and plants for 3 hours that's all I need.

The 3rd, 4th, and 5th movies have all been confirmed now, especially thanks to the profits from this movie. The under water motion capture system had to be invented by James Cameron and his team for this movie. Kate Winslet who was in Titanic, was also in this one as one of the daughters of Jake. Both times working with Cameron with sinking ships where she had to act in crazy water environments.

@MattPalmer237 Your adding "for once" and the idea that the entire planet is property of the Navi would be where you're misguided.
Modern humans are not this comically evil caricature that comes to a new land and gleefully genocides the natives. That's a fiction.
Moreover, the correct way to colonize would be to trade for land rights of some bit of land, on which humans can live under their own human laws in peaceful co-operation with the Navi nations (tribes, whatever.)
You're wrong to suggest humans never come in peace, and wrong to suggest if they want to live on Pandora it has to be under Navi law. But my contention always was that the Navi should share the land by trading for it because the humans would come in peace and not annihilate the landscape or their way of life.
Instead James paints this ridiculous caricature of humanity and ends up justifying hatred and xenophobia against humanity.

Who he voted for has nothing to do with anything. I proudly voted for Trump and I think this guy is hilariously wrong. The entire point of these movies is the HOSTILE takeover of Pandora...he said "All the Navi had to do was share the planet"...well doesn't it make a whole hell of alot more sense to say that "All humanity had to do was come in fucking peace for once and explain the situation and honor the laws of the land that isn't theirs". This entire thread is misguided.

I don’t think it’s that simple. I think that we all have struggles and some days we give into the dark and some days we share the light. I also think that if you look for the good in people, you’ll find it, and if you look for bad in people, you’ll find that, too.

Alex's reaction to the Tulkun hunting scene is exactly how I've felt every time I've watched this. "This physically hurts me"...it's extremely hard to watch even more so when you think about the fact that whales are hunted the exact same way every day, just with less flashy technology. This has to be what Cameron was wanting to highlight by making this scene so long and so brutal.

I don't know in what kind of world you live and under what massive kind of rock, but it's not the real one. People don't hate their own species because of a movie, or one man that made the movie. They hate their own species because humans are dumb, and I don't get how you keep reaching to somehow suggest otherwise, when the proof is literally all around us. @MSephiroth
1. I guess you're right about that, he's not the first to romanticize one culture so hard that he demonizes most of the human race. But that should be an unpopular thing to do. Unless you are a supremecist for a single culture, like James is for his fantasy version of Native American culture.
2. That's my point. While some people do it, it's crazy to root against humanity in favour of trees. It would be less crazy if trees were conscious beings, creating a global biosphere brain that thinks and feels, and constitutes a God-like being. But that doesn't exist. James had to invent that nonsense for rooting against humanity to make any sense at all. Thus the movie's message is not applicable to real life.
3. Earth is dying. Yes, if there was another planet that could sustain humanity without destroying anything or moving anyone, that would be better and they should leave Pandora alone. But if Pandora is the only place, that's where they need to go. The Navi would be xenophobic monsters to refuse. That's why James had to insert Unobtainium and make humans super evil. Without putting this mineral under their God tree, we would side with the humans.
4. Lol. No. The USA is not dying. They don't need to move anywhere. And even if they did, it wouldn't require annexation. Similarly, the humans don't need to annex Pandora, the Navi and humans could share the planet. It's more than big enough. But the Navi send all the humans back to the dying Earth. They don't want to share. Is that what nations on Earth do? Refuse to share their lands with people fleeing extinction because they're from an evil culture? Or would that be xenophobic?
5. Again, the only good humans are the ones that become Navi, either physically or culturally. At no point is there a human culture that disagrees with Navi values but isn't completely genocidal. It's Navi culture or nothing.
6. How convenient. Like I said, if James didn't invent a mineral and invent a God tree on top of said mineral, then we would side with the humans fleeing extinction and against the xenophobic Navi. He had to invent the non-existent God tree, make humans comically evil, and put a massive mineral deposit under the tree to justify the xenophobia. And you guys love it. Which is weird as hell.

Matthew
2025-03-22 08:35:05 +0000 UTC
@Lofti Swapping them doesn't change anything. As I've said, if the invading species is actually a comically evil species of exclusively homicidal racists, it's very difficult to justify letting them stay. You could let them live, but contain them until they change their evil ways. Otherwise, no don't let them colonize; let them go extinct. But that's why this movie is ridiculous.
That's not reality. That's not what humans are, or any species or any culture. It's actually a xenophobic message to suggest that a culture would be so comically evil that they deserve to go extinct. But that kind of xenophobia is justified to James Cameron and Avatar fans when the indigenous culture is a romanticized fantasy culture that loves plants and animals. It makes sense to him any other culture should go extinct because they're so much worse.
Koala
2025-03-22 08:27:17 +0000 UTC
@Noah They would be morally obligated to help the human race survive extinction. That is, if the humans were actually normal humans and not these comically evil racists. Sure if all humans are stupidly evil to their core then they shouldn't be allowed to live on Pandora. But that's where the whole message falls down. Are humans evil?
The problem is this movie and franchise has no middle ground. At no point does it show the Navi and human ways as being different but both good. Humans are just plain evil, unless they become Navi.
There's no reason to make it this way, except to glaze a pantheistic tree-hugging culture as 100% good and tarnish every other human culture as 100% bad. It's an extreme romanticization of that kind of culture, a fantasy version of Native American culture, to the point of demonizing the rest of humanity.

Only thing I didn’t like from this film is the characterization change for Sully and Neytiri.
Like your telling me Sully the big action hero of the first film who fought his own ppl to save those in need would just abandon spider their kids best friend???
Like the man put minimal effort into keeping him safe.
Alternatively Neytiri seeming dislike towards him simple because he’s human??? Like you do remember your husband was human right.

such a great reaction! this movie truly is a masterpiece
I think the thing with Spider is we have to remember he's still just a kid (teenager). he spent his life growing up watching the Na'vi and wanting to be like them, only to never be fully accepted. he already struggled with not liking his father, then the dude shows up not only as an avatar (looking like the father figure Spider wants) but also having basically no knowledge of the Na'vi so Spider gets to teach and bond with him for months. Quaritch then saves his life by not letting Neytiri kill him, which I think ultimately leads Spider to make the decision to pull him from the water at the end. one of the smaller details I really like- when it looks like Neytiri is going to kill Spider, as she lets him go she doesn't throw him forward towards Quaritch, she pushes him behind her like she does her other children. that to me shows she's more accepting of him than maybe she or Spider realize.

2025-03-22 03:34:55 +0000 UTC
If you believe that:
1. James Cameron is the first, or only one to have people root against the humans, you have not watched a lot of movies or shows, or games even for that matter.
2. That it took James Cameron to invent a magical 'god tree' as you keep calling it and clearly missing the whole point of the first movie and this one on top of it, to root against said humans, you really haven't been paying attention to the real world we all live in. There is no 'god tree' here, or purely evil people, or anything like that, and trust me when I sway that a LARGE amount of people hate humans and root against them nonetheless.
3. Colonizing Pandora by the way? First off, what they were mostly after, which couldn't have been said more clearly in the first movie, was Unobtainium. In this one they're after another source of money. It's not about colonization, or saving humans, or anything like that you're making it out to be. It's money, like it always was, like it was with the Native Americans, which you're just throwing in there as if those also are 'romanticized' as you put it yourself, because... Everything that happened to them was justified?
4. I really don't want to make this political, I really don't, but you really do make it sound like you're all for annexing whatever as long as you can give some weak excuse for it, so I take it you're all for the US annexing Canada and Greenland, because... One toddler of a man feels like he has the right to it?
5. The first movie spends a whole lot of time showcasing that there ARE good humans and that the Navi make mistakes and that they're traditions can get them to make stupid mistakes instead of growing and learning from them. They also don't only accept humans that 'go blue' as you say, they only accept them when they prove to be trustworthy, the rest of that decision is up to them. Hell, a lot of what you're saying is evne disproven by Spider's whole part in this second movie.
6. It wasn't SOME trees as already pointed out, it was THE tree. There's a whole goddamn big ass planet, and they specifically focused on one place, and remember why? MONEY! So again, it's fine you don't get the movie, truly, but then don't get your thong in a bunch because you somehow feel overly called out by it, for some reason, it's weird as hell.

The good humans aren't accepted unless they join the Navi and paint themselves blue, living only as the Navi do. The rest of humanity is reduced to this comically evil caricature. At no point is there a suggestion of the Navi respecting the humans' way of life because humans are not 100% bad. At no point is there compromise. No, he wants us to root against the worst aspects of humanity like greed and mindless destruction and disregarding how important the world and animals and nature is for us to actually thrive as a species. He wants us to root against blind hatred and prejudice of other cultures just because it doesn't make sense to us which is evident in your "fantasy nonsense" comment.
And bro, we ARE comically awful. At least we CAN be. Just look at who is in the fucking white house right now. But not all of us are, which is ALSO the point and why there are many humans that fight on the side of the Navi and are equally accepted as well.

To do it, he had to invent a magical conscious biosphere that doesn't exist. Meanwhile, he makes his settler humans totally justified because Earth is dying. He suggests that even if the entire human race is dying, it still isn't worth colonizing a forest, if it means killing some trees.
The humans are 100% right. Colonizing Pandora is a matter of life and death for the whole of humanity. All the Navi had to do was share their planet. But they couldn't accept any way of life that didn't preserve trees. Which would be blatantly absurd. Hence, the need for James to make trees into God "Eywa," and the humans ruthless maniacs.
If the humans were actually normal, and the trees weren't God, then the Navi would clearly be the evil ones. Putting some plants and animals over the survival of the human race is insane.

I'm glad that Alex now knows why so many people wanted him to watch it.
Wachted it so many times and I agree. Dying animals are worse than dying people. I cry when Neteyam dies but the hate of the hunters is so much stronger

The thing with Spider is that in the actual movie he spent months with his "dad" and even though his dad is bad, he still treated Spider better than Jake or Neyteri did, so thats the main reason he saved him

I’ve been 5 times in my life on vacations, it’s absolutely nuts how frequent the sirens are. Especially in Oahu where I was this summer, they are just CONSTANT.
