LET’S WATCH: 300

Hey guys!

I'll tell you what, I've NEVER felt so in touch with my masculinity as I did when watching this movie lolol

THIS WAS FUCKING INSANELY COOL AND EPIC!!!!

Wow. I hope you all enjoyed the hell out of this reaction, because the movie was insanely badass!

Thank you all for participating in my War/Battle movie poll. This was the first movie that came from a genre-specific poll!

Love you all,

Alex

Comments

Kudos on picking up early on that the reason the foes were so exaggerated, the villains so deformed and monstrous, the animals so enormous and bestial, was that it was all a tale to amp up the army before the battle. Part of why this movie is so badass is because it's modeled directly off of the graphic novel. There's another movie that is basically one of his graphic novels come to life, and if you haven't seen it, I *highly* recommend it. And that's Sin City.

Gruffydd

I subscribed just to watch your full reaction to this! Such a bad ass movie. Real amazing quotes from other Spartan Kings - When asked "when I enter your lands would you like me as friend or foe" they got a one word reply..."Neither." Later the same invader said "If I enter your lands as an enemy I will destroy all your lands and its peoples." They got a one word reply...."If" They were not invaded either time.

Micahel Williams

This movie is based on historic events, although heavily dramatized. There were 300 Spartans, but along side them there was also something like 7,000 Greeks and 700 Thesbians, along with some other forces. The number of the Persians is estimated in modern times to be somewhere in the 120,000-300,000 range. The second movie takes place simultaneously with this one, but focuses on the naval battle if I remember correctly. Several lines from this movie are historically accurate as well, though the speakers may be different than history tells. "We will fight in the shade," and "Come and get them (translated from Molon Labe, which is why you often see it paired with a spartan helmet) are examples.

Handsome Squidward Clause

The reason why there are so many things that are not human looking is because it's told through the eye of the story teller so whatever the story teller had wrote is what they portray in the movie and sometimes things are exaggerated so they included the exaggeration in the movie

lucas curley

Sparta was not part of Rome until around 150 bc and by then they were already a shell of their former self so I wouldn't consider it to be part of Rome and plus that time is thousands of years after this movies setting

lucas curley

In my opinion Snyder's best work he ever put out. A sheer masterclass of cinematography, photography and composition (tho it's adapted from a comic) every single shot is a picture. I miss the years when we had the kind of movies, we just don't get any historical/"fantasy" epic moviess. It's like listening to someone telling a tale and we see things oh the tale "twist" reality (like the wolf clearly not being an actual wolf or the immortal looking like orcs), this is just perfect

Rocketboy

The fight in the shade lines an actual quote from one of the Spartans. So badass

Josh Spin

To this day I think when it comes to Cinematography, whith how shots of scenes are done and the Coloring and everything, this is such a unique Movie. I can't think of any movie that did it similar to this one.

NinoDonDino

You should watch entourage on max

Jose Hernandez

No lie my cousin jordan just had his first lil boy and you better believe it, he named him Leonidas 😂🤌🏻🤙 dudes a Lil powerhouse at only 10 months.

David Joshua Intermont

I will comment it on polls too

Piipiipoopoo520

Yes you definitely need to🙌

Piipiipoopoo520

it totally is

Rise of an Empire? Is it nearly as good? Idc if it’s different actors, I just care if it’s good enough

NoahG10

I’ve heard great things about those projects, I most definitely need to check them out my self too

NoahG10

You should watch DREDD (2012)! It has similar vibes to this movie but underrated as hell. You would fuck with DREDD (2012) 💯

NoahG10

You definitely need to see “Kingdom of Heaven” and “Vikings” now🤌 Vikings is probably the best tv show ever made, no joke!

Piipiipoopoo520

i really hope you know that there is another one

Julius

yeah it's here

David Ivaškovič

That's what I'm saying. It's fucking perfect for him

David Ivaškovič

now that you've seen this you have to see we are the spartans. it's a parody of this!

Bonci

The monstrous looking people were basically how the Spartans seen the Persians, but this is loosely based on true events, where Leonidas halted the Persian march just long enough for Greece to rally the troops for a full war. Which is historically significant for the entire world really because that allowed Democracy to spread across the world from Greece.

Koty Taylor

This story was a retelling of past events after the battle, so yes, numbers were exaggerated and many things were made up

Michael

“What are you, Persian?” Dude that’s Iran don’t call someone that as an insult

Michael

I feel like they managed to capture perfectly the ton of a comic book which it is inspired of. There are a ton of snapshots from the movie that could be picked straight out of the comic.

Mårten

The thing is, back in ancient thru mideivil times, being a soldier was a part time job that you were called up to. It was the elite, like Spartans, that made being a soldier their whole life

Michael

Ok, things you missed so after the queen killed the guy he had gold from the God because his face was on the God so that's why he was a traitor and there other thing is when he cut his face he prove to the people that he was not a God because God's don't bleed!

Eric & Erika

I've only noticed now. But can someone explain to me why the almost constant slow-mo works in this movie but not in Rebel Moon?😅 guess Zack Snyder always had a thing for this.

Mo Ma

"Then we will fight in the shade" was actually said by the Spartans

E-Hensley

Zack Snyder talked about this movie when he went on Joe Rogan. Speaking about how this movie came to be but also, speaking of things Greek actually did that he didn't want... or couldn't put into this movie. all in all, a pretty great movie. Gerard Butler was the perfect cast for King Leonidas I.

Preston McClerren

Watch the second 300

bajan wolf 16

I’ve always taken the “may you live forever” line to mean: I hope you live forever with the guilt and shame of betraying your own people and country.

Wade Lawson

I also feel like the may you live forever line was like an insult to his horrific looks, like I hope you live so more people can be disgusted by you

Grant

well, that was the best intro ever. Love your mug man hahaha

Master X

Anyone else get the Forest Whitaker eye everytime alex said Roman instead of Greek? Just me? Cool

Deadlift.D.McGee

Sparta 🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️. Rome 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

Agus Mercado

There were technically 3 of the 300 that did not fight in the final battle, but there were no survivors. One was sent away before the fighting even began to another Greek city, presumably to seek reinforcements and got back to Thermopylae too late. He was branded a coward, the worst insult to a Spartan, and ended his subscription to life by way of a rope. Two more were sent back to Sparta before the final battle because of eye infections/injuries. One came back and joined the fight even though he was literally blind. The other returned to Sparta and was also branded a coward. He wasn't allowed to train with the other soldiers, no one would sell him food, and he was ignored and treated as if he didn't exist. A year later he fought in the battle of Plataea in an attempt to redeem himself, going into a berserker like rage and broke out in front of the Spartan lines, dying in the battle. The Spartans stated that he redeemed himself and erased the black mark from his name. Spartans being Spartans though, he did not receive any special honors because he had fought with reckless abandon and didn't adhere to the Spartan training and professionalism. Dilios is based off of this last man.

Evan

Also, when you start playing games on the channel, I highly recommend the God of War series. The first game's story is clearly inspired by the battle of thermopylae with a huge "what if" scenario. It's really old though. Like 20 years I think so maybe you can check the story of the first few games on youtube or something and then you can dive into the newer games that are set in the Norse realm with the Norse mythology. Really think you'd like it.

David Ivaškovič

Sparta was a Greek town Alex, not Roman

David Ivaškovič

Every time you said Roman soldier, I died a little inside.

Migrawn

This movie is awesome, but you know this movie is historically innnacurate in a thousand different ways right?

Michael

Connect a laptop via HDMI.

Alex Georgiadis

If you made a War collection be sure to add Saving Private Ryan into it too.

Hiphopopotamus

It doesn't give me the option.

Paul McKenna

Cast it and go full screen

jace Z

I was cringing so hard every time.

Is there any way to watch these on my tv?

React to 300 rise of an empire!!

Escaria Miller

This summary has the feel of being written by someone who had to do a detailed report about these events for a History class ;)

Ranger Maverick

Yep. Agreeing with Jan's comment. Alex was basically correct in his take on that line. If a glorious death is the highest honour a Spartan can attain, then never being able to die is the greatest disrespect imaginable.

Ranger Maverick

But @Alex Hefner can you explain me why is that? Why you have to do in one way or the other because of youtube?

Trigo

As a "workman" I can honestly say I'd have some PTSD if I walked in on a kid giving himself a tugging 🤣

Dan Lamm

THIS IS SPARTAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!

Nvs Abhishek

The Patreon video player auto-generated subtitles are trash. They misinterpret a lot of dialog and sound effects, and sometimes switches to random different languages for multiple lines of dialog.

Ranger Maverick

Alex you could turn on english titles in movies reaction

Abuzz Klanica

In offense of the "wild take"....art and media is subjective is it not? Let people live where they will 🤷 but maybe that's just me 😊 I used to love this movie...still do in parts but it pails in comparison for others to me. To each their own 🤌

Kenz Silverwolf

Still my favorite job 😭😭

Kenz Silverwolf

Loved this. Your humor always brings me up

Gogeta101

You gotta get on Reacher Season 3 asap!!!

Hunter Waterston

Thank you! I get at the beginning maybe since Alex may not know much about it but they said Greece, free Greeks, Greek men, citizens so many times. Gah I had to laugh after a point.

Crystal Laherrere

As a greek history buff i cringe everytime he keeps bringing up the roman empire

Immeasurably Me

If I remember correctly during the fight scene at the 56 minute mark they actually used like 3 cameras on a dolly system and they cut it by having one of the camera being a zoom in so they cut to the other cameras by zooming in and out with that slow motion effect going on as well very interesting technique

victoria

Not one mention of the fact that Stelios was played by Michael Fassbender, Magneto (Erik Lensherr) from the later X-Men movies. Oh, and btw in case it hasn't been said enough yet, Spartans are Greeks, not Romans. The Roman Empire pretty much modeled their entire society based on the ancient Greeks.

Ranger Maverick

Bros, like Alex, does anyone else just want to go workout after watching 300? I do every single time I watch it!

Andrew Pudwill

You have to watch meet the Spartans

matthew stephens

Now we need to watch The Last Samurai after this

Sean Roberts

Is that why don’t kill the messenger a thing

CW Tye

There are

Canaan Bishop

There are auto generated subtitles

Canaan Bishop

That's a great idea honestly, although with the pace of the video and Alex' habit of talking while watching he would miss entire periods lol

MasterElodin

Why is there no subtitels anymore?

Elvis Lejarp

You should react to History of the Entire World, I Guess. It will give you a crash course in history.

Craig D

U should do the sequal 300 rise of an empire

James Skates

Humm that one is difficult. I didn't know about that.

Trigo

See this right here is the problem. For the final YouTube videos, there aren’t subtitles. So we either have to pick no subtitles with pausing to talk or subtitles with no pausing.

Alex Hefner

I agree

Benjamin Martin

Somehow someway we gotta get Alex to play God of War I swear he’ll love it.

Escaria Miller

Was a cool movie but would be nice if you turn on subtitles when is available or you guys don't want that?

Trigo

I can't even fathom a reality where someone can say an epic movie like 300 sucks, then turn around and watch a cartoon. Wild, indeed.

LoganPool

We totally have to do Troy next while we are on this subject :D

John Smith

Having a story narrated by Faramir is the best a man could ask for <3

John Smith

Hedgehog lore!

Aleksi H.

You're actually wrong, it's because to live forever was a disgrace to Spartans. Biggest glory is to die in battle. He basically told him you will never be a spartan and that's why he was desperate. Ephialtes (hunchbacks name) is used in greek as insult meaning "nightmare" even now to describe someone as ultimate traitor.

Jan Kormendy

I could have sworn I watched his reaction to it but I can’t find it on YouTube or Patreon lol. Maybe I’m crazy, but I’m still *pretty sure* he’s seen it

Cory

definitely watch the spoof film meet the spartans

Chris Hewlett

07 bitches!!!

Matthew

the sequel didn't live up to the hype of the first one imo

Sheldon Lee

One of the actors from this movie is In it

Zaiden

You gotta watch Spartacus if you enjoyed this in my top 5 shows

Zaiden

Fun Fact this movie is Alex's 180th movie he has watched on Patreon!

Jack

Nah that deformed dude was feeling guilty that even though Leonidas knew he betrayed the Spartan forces, he still wished for him to live forever. He knew deep down that he fucked up and did the wrong thing by turning on them. Too little, too late, though.

The Splawn

Ayo I still have this movie from blockbuster back In the day lol

Adam scott hampton

these spartans in southern greece were about 250 years before the rise of rome.

Brendan

YES!!!!

Melody Netherton

There is a sequel 300 rise of a empire it’s not as good but the action is definitely still there and great

Jonathan centeno

Anybody think he would like Beowulf????

Escaria Miller

I loved seeing how happy this made you! As far as what you were asking about the monster show thier dad was refering to the fact that the romans did not classify sexuality. Like you might be with a guy one night and a chic the next but they wouldn't consider gay/heterosexual just sexual. They were not about labels essentually and some kinky crap went on in roman baths apparently. It was a way for thier dad to justify the terrible things he did without admiting to being gay. I always saw thier dad as the real monster.

Melody Netherton

Bout time we get a manly movie on here! Watch frozen next!

Kevin L.

The way bro enjoyed this he’s gotta see Gladiator

Luqui

We picked it because we knew he would like it 🙄

Simply.Beyond

Been waiting on this for years….. that fing everyone!!!

I’m 11 mins in and already tweaking. Spartans are from Sparta which was its own nation but had very close relations with the Greeks. Rome wasn’t a thing yet

Alex here’s a summary of what actually happened in real life if you’re curious: King Leonidas I of Sparta led about 300 Spartan hoplites, along with a few thousand Greek allies, against the Persian army of King Xerxes I at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE. The Greeks held off the vastly larger Persian force for three days in a narrow mountain pass, using their superior training and tactics to inflict heavy casualties. However, a Greek traitor named Ephialtes (not the deformed outcast from the movie) showed the Persians a secret path through the mountains, allowing them to flank the Spartans. Realizing they were surrounded, Leonidas dismissed most of the Greek allies, but he and his 300 Spartans, along with 700 Thespians and 400 Thebans, stayed behind to fight to the death. Leonidas was killed in battle, and the remaining Spartans were overwhelmed. The Persians mutilated his body, but a year later, the Greeks ultimately defeated the Persians at the Battle of Plataea, securing Greek independence.

BeachBum

PLEASE do another war movie poll because while this is a good movie, there are so many better movies to watch (particularly from the era of WWI onward). That I think you will enjoy for having a bit more depth than the raw testosterone that is 300

Shaun Valladares

I haven't seen this movie since I saw it opening night in theaters. I remember thinking it was bad ass movie. Not sure why I haven't given it a rewatch in 20 years. Maybe I had to wait on you, Alex! This'll be fun.

LoganPool

If you enjoyed this movie Troy would knock your socks off lol Brad Pitt !!!

Love that you’re doing war movies, fantastic genre and history telling. Can’t wait to see more.

I’m so glad he didn’t “that’s rough buddy” the shade scene 😂

Mad Lad Wizard

“My man just lavar balled that Persian” might be my new favorite alex quote

Aidan f

The word Marathon comes from an Athenean runner that ran to every major city-state in Greece to warn of Persian threat in under 48 hours and didn’t stop running until he met with them all. He dropped dead once he finished his mission. Now we have 5K marathons the OG was almost 2 days without stop

Mad Lad Wizard

The Spartans went with between 150 and 200 spears 100ish Corinthians stayed as well. The army’s of Greece left and Sparta sent 30 of their least experienced men to inform Sparta of the scope of the threat.

Mad Lad Wizard

It’s based off the real life Leonidus which makes it even more badass to think someone really did all this.

Jack Frost

I suggest looking into it a bit more. In reality, the reason we know of the 300 isn’t because 300 men were sent to fight the Persians, it’s because 300 men stayed behind to hold them off to give the other Greek city states time to prepare for an attack and rally up an army to defeat them

Cole Romero

I’m just sad Alex won’t be like Faromir? Buffed out Faromir. 😂

Not Romans Alex.

Alex Georgiadis

The reason the wolf at the beginning was the way it was was to be as if the story teller was saying this story to those younger, or just to recount how events went underway. It’s similar to how the ancient historians almost always exaggerated events to make their side look coooler
