IT'S RAGDOLLIUS TIME
Added 2025-05-15 13:45:53 +0000 UTCOne of the most requested features has been a Euphoria-style ragdoll system, and we get why. Physics-based ragdolls give NPCs a much more realistic look, with characters trying to keep their balance, reacting to where they’ve been hit, and generally moving in a more believable way.
This kind of system was popularized by GTA IV’s ragdolls. The original Euphoria system is owned by a company that licenses it to AAA studios like Rockstar, so we can’t just plug it into our game. That’s why we’ve decided to build our own version, tailored specifically for VR, and we’re aiming to make it even better over time.
Here’s an early look at our progress, led by @AC who’s heading up R&D on the ragdoll system. It’s still very much a work in progress, but the core is in place: a physics-based balance system where characters react to pushes and pulls, take into account the direction and force applied, and adjust based on what’s beneath their feet, like obstacles, slopes, or uneven terrain.
Once we’ve nailed the self-balancing, we’ll start layering on more features like hit reactions, AI behaviors, gore, and beyond. Stay tuned, more progress very soon!
