Reacher S1E3 - "Spoonful" (FULL EPISODE REACTION)

Hey guys!

Each and every episode (albeit, we've only watched 3) has gotten better and better! Can someone explain to me what exactly some of you all mean when you say that you think Reacher is "on the spectrum". Like autistic?

Something in this show that they have absolutely NAILED is the pacing and the level of intrigue! I can't quite pinpoint why exactly I feel that way about this show, but the one thing I do know is this: I AM SO FUCKING EXCITED TO CONTINUE WATCHING THIS SHOW!

What is the BEST episode of this season? Just give me a number, based on your opinion! Thank you all so much for watching these shows with me day in and day out. I love you all so much!

Onto the next!

Love,

Alex

It blows my mind the same guy that plays Reacher played Thad Castle in Blue Mountain State. Such wildly different characters

I literally gave point by point evidence of him being Autistic...not that it was necessarily intentional, but it's pretty hard coded for people who know the condition intimately. ...and most Autistic folks don't say "on the spectrum", that's an allistic euphemism...much like "differently-abled" or "special needs" and person-first language. Autistic isn't a bad word. Disabled isn't a bad word. My needs aren't "special"...and I'm not a "person with Autism" (I know I'm a person, thanks...if YOU need to remind yourself of my personhood, that's says more about you than it ever could me...and it's a part of my identity that informs everything about how I experience this world...we don't say "person with Judaism" or "person with homosexuality"...we aren't separate from our condition and it's not luggage that we can set down when it's inconvenient... I'm never NOT with my Autism) or "on the spectrum", I'm Autistic. When we speak in euphemisms, it bakes in negativity. If there's nothing bad about something, there's no need to try to soften it...so by trying to talk around things instead of saying them directly, we automatically send the message that something is bad about it. Need an example? We used to only talk about gay folks in euphemisms (he's a friend of Dorothy, light in his loafers, a confirmed bachelor, etc.) because there was such horrible stigma associated with being homosexual. It's almost 2025 and we still think that it's ok to attach shame to something that isn't shameful. There's literally no reason to soften someone having a different neurotype. Think how you would feel if we treated people differently based on their blood type! "Oh, poor thing... he's a little 'touched' with the AB-"

Love that he missed that he called it at 33:44 ishπŸ˜‚

I'm so happy you're enjoying this show, it's definitely one of my favorites. As far as the "spectrum" thing goes. Reacher isn't autistic, the author of the Reacher series, Lee Child has never mentioned or hinted at anything about him being autistic. Can't wait for the next episode!

Bryan Forquer

He's not on the autism spectrum. He's just a sociopath and/or has sociopathic tendencies. His "condition" is mentioned as a joke in passing in S2E4 at 23:08. It's a lot more apparent in season 2 because people who have known him for years always pick on him (in a good way, as friends) because of his various sociopathic tendencies. But no more spoilers. Season 2 is better imo than Season 1, but both are great.

Reacher isn't explicitly stated to be on the spectrum or autistic...though it's possible. He's intelligent, methodical and emotionally distant but I always thought it was a result of his extensive military training and service, combined with being a loner. I was diagnosed with high potential intellectual syndrome and OCD. I have a photographic memory, extreme adaptability to situations, high-order cognitive skills, and excellent recall capacity. Some of my odd traits is that speak directly and carefully, I have difficulty socializing, and I prefer to be alone. I've always felt out of place. I graduated at 15 and everyone has always seen me as strange or different. I can relate to his personality.

Jessica Houser

People say "on the spectrum" as another way of saying autistic. The thing is, people tend to label *way* too many things as autism. If you know people who are genuinely extremely intelligent you might know that they can sometimes have trouble communicating. It's not autism or any disorder really, they just think quite differently than most people.

Omni

Im on the spectrum, doc says im "high functioning". To be honest I can see how Reacher could be on the spectrum. Hes brash and to the point in conversations, tells it as it is in a monotone voice, seems to lack empathy, doesn't seem to understand boundaries, lacks social skills, is highly motivated, obsesively pursue's his intrests(like music). I could definitely see it.

Man has a pair of 2k headphones damn just noticed that

Alex, it's fucking wild how accurate your meerkat comparison is for KJ. I never would have gotten there, despite having watched the show multiple times, but damn if you're not dead on.

Jeff K

I've never thought about that with Reacher, but hey, if he is, I won't be mad at it. My son is on the spectrum so I'm happy to have a heroic figure he can relate to.

Jeff K

I think people are just saying he has tendencies that align with autism or people on the spectrum, the writer never specifically says he is but they say he’s somewhat based off Sherlock Holmes who almost definitely is so ya.

Daniel Milne

"My man's turned on by that." I mean, wouldn't you be? Roscoe is feisty AND foxy in equal parts. Also: that's a fucking Desert Eagle she gives Reacher. Which makes sense. Huge dude needs the hugest handgun.
