Hey everyone,

Ok.... this is going to be premature, much like my ejaculation. Too much? Sorry. BUT, I feel fairly confident in saying that I believe Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is my FAVORITE Harry Potter movie....

There! I said it! I won't make that a definitive statement, quite yet. That being said, this is the PERFECT Halloween-type movie, am I right?!

I forgot how incredible this one was! I love you all so much! You guys are the best community I could have ever hoped for! I hope you guys know that each and every one of you mean the absolute world to me! <3

Love you guys so much,

Alex

The dog is infact called Serial Lupinus lol

King SRKY

Thinking the same thing when he said it aha

Shaun Valladares

During Lupin's boggart lesson to the whole class is our first bit of foreshadowing when he steps in front of Harry to protect him; You can see the boggart turning into a full moon.....The one object that Lupin fears Second bit of foreshadowing is "Turn to page 394" and the Chapter on "Werewolves" and Snape telling Harry and the class that Lupin is incapable of teaching at that present moment because there was a full moon that night unfortunately for him (There was also another one coming up during Christmas hence telling Harry that he'll teach him the Patronus Charm spell after the holidays as he'll need to rest once turning back from a werewolf) Third was Snape's line "Well, well, Lupin. Out for a little walk in the moonlight, are we?"

Shaun Valladares

Why are the other reactions blurred and only with a timer

One of the most missed facts is that lupin is one of the original creators of the mauraders map. That's why he knew so much about it. moony, worm tail, pad foot and prongs. That's lupin, pettigrew, sirus, and James potter.

Matt of all Trades

Thank you!!! I love this movie!!!

Mimimi

This movie has been my favorite since its release!!

Nikolas Wilde

Crookshanks knew Scabbers was a bad boy the whole time

Ryan “Rineran” Fox

argh. this movie messed up most of the great stuff from the book so badly. i don't even know where to begin

Viera Galikova

I know this is random, but a funny lil fact—that spell Harry was doing in the beginning (“lumos maxima”) actually works with iPhones. If you say “hey siri, Lumos” it turns the light on your on your phone! :D in the books, to turn the light off, you say “nox” so if you say “siri, nox” it will turn your phone light off. Fun lil Harry Potter/iPhone fact heheh

shleepy

Nerd! Yeah I hate when source material is ignored tho fr

MaulTheObese

When leaving Hogwarts, Voldemort put a curse on the school, mainly the DADA position to ensure that no one person remains with the position for more than a year. Thats why we have Quirrel, Lockhart, Lupin, Moody, Umbridge, and even Snape (he had the position, then went up to headmaster in deathly hallows)

Stormyoak259

I think if Alex wants to react to the books, he should react to the audiobooks. Jim Dale is a phenomenal reader.

Miss Molly

rewatching this movie made me realise how much they changed characters and other stuff, and how much i dislike them doing that. They made Ron into a jerk who agreed with snape when he called hermione a know-it-all, in the books, in that situation, he stood up for hermione and got detention for it. They gave Ron's line: "if you want to kill harry, you have to kill us too", to hermione. These movies glaze the hell out of her character, and shoot ron in the leg while doing so. They make snape look like a good guy, defending the golden trio from lupin. They don't really point out just how horrible he has to be, in order for him to be literally the biggest fear, neville has. They don't show how big a bitch snape is for bullying literal kids. The situations and small changes made from, book to movie just, don't make sense: harry taking a full blown trip with buckbeak, (sure it was a cool as hell, but doesn't make sense from a logical perspective). Harry literally using lumos maxima at the dursleys for whatever reason, and not getting into any trouble. Marge flying out to the sky was funny but really dumb, as in the book she just floated in the house. They made the bartender Tom a braindead idiot. Why did Sirius bark to harry or show any kind of hostility towards him, when harry had just left the dursleys? And they just flat-out don't explain many things.

Aapeli Mäki

I believe they mentioned in “Harry Potter: and The cursed child” that time turners have been banned for a long time

BWarrior808

“McGonagall is more of a guardian than anyone else in Harry’s life” Mrs. Weasley: “Am I a joke to you?”

Watching this realizing 4 people in a row are dead now at the opening feast. Hagrid, Minerva, Dumbledore and Snape all of them passed away. Fuck mortality.

Ludus Aurea

The dementors suck the soul out of a person. They start with the happiest memories until you are left with nothing but your worst so that you suffer, and then they suck out your soul, which was that light that came out of serious' mouth. When Harry produced the stag Petronas and fought off the dementors, serious's soul went back in to his body.

Michael Shelton

In his younger years, Voldemort actually wanted to be the defence against the dark arts teacher but Dumbledore declined twice and told him to try again when he's older. He was pissed about it so he cursed the position so that every teacher that was brought on would only last for a year. It's a big reason as to why Snape was never allowed to become the DATDA teacher. Dumbledore didn't want him to die or lose the position. He only allowed him during half blood prince because it was part of Dumbledores plan.

Joanisa

Heida commented a lot of pertinent book information, I just had some more to add that I thought deserved it's own comment: Some important things that need pointing out is that, in the books, it is the dementors PRESENCE that causes Harry (and nearly Neville, as well) to pass out. In the books, they don't do the "soul sucking" thing that's shown in the movies. However, they NEARLY perform "the kiss" on Harry at the lake, along with Sirius, before Future Harry uses the Patronus. Also, during the Quidditch match where the dementors arrive, Gryffindor is playing against Hufflepuff. The Hufflepuff seeker trying to catch the snitch is SUPPOSED to be Cedric Diggory, the boy who dies at the end of Goblet of Fire. In the books, Harry falls off of his broomstick due to the dementors right before he catches the snitch, and Cedric is right alongside him. Cedric catches the snitch after Harry falls, and Hufflepuff wins the match. Cedric tried to ask for a rematch, but everyone, even Oliver Wood, admitted that he won fair and square. This movie did him dirty by having him get struck by lightning, at worst, or him not even being the seeker, at best.

DarnedStingray8

Yeah it was just a movie mistake. There are a few of them but the reason it’s most noticeable to me is it’s literally the beginning of the movie kicks off with a fairly big mistake. I will say though I’m not trashing the movie i love all of them and that’s actually the only thing that annoys me about all 8 of them

Matthew

Yeah that’s always been a questionable decision on their part. Especially when Harry’s school stuff is supposed to be locked under the stairs

Chad Higgins

Alex the reason Lupin wanted to wait until after the holidays wasn't to give Harry rest because the spell is that difficult. It's because it was a full moon and he needed to rest before he was ready to teach Harry.

Thomas

Coleman I agree with Heida on that point. The first time I watched The Order of the Phoenix I didn't understand why a nickname for Sirius Black. Of course on the second or third watch, I figured it out. But if they had explained it in this movie it would have been clear the first time.

Thomas

It’s funny you mention their hairs cuz they’re the most book accurate out of all the movies I’m not 100 sure for Ron but Harry’s definitely is

Chad Higgins

I feel like a lot of people have this as their favourite movie myself included however my favourite book is 100% half blood prince

Chad Higgins

there is an easter egg of people f-ing its not on the names you can see 2 sets of feet together both facing foward lmao

Zakk Z

Same except it's my favourite of both the books and the movies. the tonal shift in PoA was the start of a deeper story that had me hooked from the first page as a child.

Misse

Fun fact: I was at Virginia Woods in the UK when they filmed the Hippogriff Care of Magical Creatures Class scene. The security guard came over to talk to my parents and me and my sister, and he asked if he could get us some autographs. I ended up getting both Tom Felton and Rupert Grint's signatures, which was a dream come true to my 14 year old teenage girl heart! We also watched the lad who played Crabbe miss his chair between takes and fall on his ass 😂

Misse

The theory of why they never saw Pettigrew on the map is because other people cant see the marauders on the map because they made it. Harry can see him because hes basically a maurader because his dad is one is one of the mauraders

Zakk Z

"They gave me weird vibes at first but I actually kind of like them bus folk" -Alex James Hefner

crackdobby

It's my favourite of the movies. Has so much style over the others that all feel kind of the same.

Charlie

It’s actually illegal outside Hogwarts if you’re underage. That’s why Harry said “but we aren’t allowed to use magic outside of Hogwarts” and why he isn’t using magic at the beginning of the book. It was only in the movie and not in the book and a flaw in the movies part.

Matthew

It's illegal IN THE PRESENCE OF A MUGGLE. And even then, like I said, something like this can be easily explained to a Muggle. This is something that CAN be explained unlike other plot holes.

Heida

Yeah I guess but it's still a big thing...

Heida

Maybe someone. Some people like to read.

Heida

My favorite book least favorite movie

Zakk Z

I don't think the creation of Marauders map is a "significant plot point" as you said, it is for sure a good addition if they explain it, but without it the movie still make it work. Let just say that we don't know who created the map, but we know that Lupin know about the map, and that's how he found Peter

Coleman

Honestly just annoying to scroll past but really cool and I can appreciate your effort

Rhys Robbins

THANK YOU! this info was amazing 🤩

Rachel Cabot

I did. It was awesome.

Rachel Cabot

holy crap dude. I dont think anyone is gonna read all that

Brayden

Yeah but it’s still illegal. It’s like the law is you can’t rob people but if someone robs to feed a starving family member it’s still breaking the law but it has an understandable reason. I honestly just think the movie goofed up a bit

Matthew

I used to think this too but the main reason why underage magic is illegal is to prevent it from being exposed to Muggles. Lumos is such a mundane charm that it can be easily explained to any Muggle who spots it, so the Ministry probably doesn’t care. They also likely take the context into account (like with Madge). It is not in the book though. Instead, Harry is doing his homework using a torch, but he DID cast Lumos in the book in another instance after leaving the Dursleys but didn't get in trouble because he was all alone in the dark and they knew Sirius Black was after him.

Heida

This actually used to be my least favourite (still loved it though which just shows how good the films are) but in recent years I've gained a new respect and love for it. It was the first one that left out significant plot points and details from the books though (the first two are definitely closest to the books). For instance, it doesn't explain the origin story of the Marauders Map and that it was created by a group of four friends at Hogwarts together under their nicknames: Moony was Remus Lupin (as the moon brings out the werewolf); Padfoot was Sirius Black (as he could turn himself into a dog who has soft fleshy pads on its feet); Prongs was James Potter, Harry's dad (as he could turn himself into a Stag with antlers and the tips of a stag's antlers are called prongs); and Wormtail was Peter Pettigrew (as he could turn himself into a rat and a rat's tail looks like a worm). That is how Lupin knew how to turn the map on and off. Dumbledore knew he was a werewolf and planted the Whomping Willow to use as a secret passage to the Shrieking Shack as a place for him to transform during a full moon (the Shrieking Shack was called haunted because people would hear scary noises). His three friends figured it out and learned to transform themselves into animals so they could safely be with him when he transformed into a werewolf. They had to be sneaky because they were not registered as Animagi. McGonagall, who transforms into a cat, is an example of a registered Animagus. But here are some fun facts/answers: Since the existence of Time-Turners have created big plot holes and raised questions, like why didn't they use it to prevent Voldemort killing Harry’s parents, J.K. Rowling has made the explanation that you can only go back 5 hours without seriously harming yourself. Also, HP exists in a universe that applies the Single Timeline Theory of time travel. You experience a single time line that never changes. There is no timeline where Buckbeak and Harry die or Sirius does not escape. At the same time, there is no timeline where Harry's parents survive. The Harry and Hermione that went back in time did not travel back in time multiple times, only once. But basically everything already happened. It didn't change anything. They were always there, hence the rocks that were thrown at them BY HERMIONE and Hermione seeing herself. We, the viewer, just didn't see them. One has to decide to use a Time-Turner to change the future, not the past. You have to decide ahead of time what you want to change. At the time of Buckbeak's "execution", Dumbledore has already decided to send Harry and Hermione back in time. He already knows that Buckbeak escapes because of the time travel. In the book, Hermione gave the Time-Turner back at the end of the year as she no longer needed it. Fans have also talked about a plot hole regarding Fred and George not noticing that some dude named Peter Pettigrew was with Ron all the time and even in his bed. J.K. Rowling said they simply did not care to look at where Ron was and who he was with. But there is a theory that the Marauders designed the map so that no one else besides them could see them on the map. However, in the film Harry was able to see Peter, so that doesn't make sense. In the book it is actually Lupin who sees Peter, not Harry. So that would be a film plot hole. Also, in the books, the names are not as obvious as they are in the films (each person is represented by a dot with their name above it in small letters). If the twins had seen Peter's name it probably would have looked like he was just another student. If underage magic outside of Hogwarts is illegal, why did Harry not get in trouble for using the Lumos charm in the beginning of this film? First, it is not in the book - instead, Harry is doing his homework using a torch. Second, the main reason why underage magic is illegal is to prevent it from being exposed to Muggles. Lumos is such a mundane charm that it can be easily explained to any Muggle who spots it, so the Ministry probably doesn’t care. They also likely take the context into account (like with Madge). Harry DID cast Lumos in the book in another instance after leaving the Dursleys but didn't get in trouble because he was all alone in the dark and they knew Sirius Black was after him. Here's how and why Sirius escaped. The minister had visited Azkaban and Sirius asked him for the newspaper. He saw a photo of the Weasleys in Egypt and immediately recognised Peter Pettigrew disguised as Scabbers. Since the Dementors did not know that Sirius was an Animagus and they cannot sense an animal's thoughts, he escaped by transforming into his dog form. Lupin thought Sirius was guilty and he wasn't helping him until he found out Peter was alive. It was actually Crookshanks, Hermione's cat, who helped Sirius get into Hogwarts, as he knew all along that Scabbers was really Peter and that Sirius was disguised as a dog. Crookshanks is half Kneazle, a magical cat-like breed of feline, known for their uncanny ability to detect untrustworthy intentions or suspicious activity. This is why 'Scabbers' went missing, as he was hiding from Sirius AND Crookshanks. Sirius IS the one who scratched the painting, as he was trying to get into the Gryffindor common room to get the rat/Peter. He is also the one Harry saw before the bus came (there is a theory that the dementors attacked Harry on the train because they could smell Sirius' scent since he got so close to Harry). The dementors are a metaphor for depression and are based on J.K. Rowling's own experience. The presence of a dementor makes the surrounding atmosphere grow cold and dark. It drains its victims of happy thoughts, memories and emotions. Every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of them and it forces its victims to relive their worst memories. That is why you need to think of your happiest memory to create a Patronus Charm. As someone who has battled depression for years, I can honestly say it is the most accurate description of it. The dementors are invisible to muggles just like depression is invisible to us. The Patronus Charm makes it go away, even if it's just for a little while, and brings a bright positive energy like therapy (or whatever works for that person) does with depression. Chocolate is also used to help alleviate the effects of dementors. Real world scientists say that chocolate has chemicals inside it that stimulate the release of endorphins (natural hormones that can alleviate pain, lower stress and improve mood), often leading to the feeling of increased happiness. The Patronus Charm is one of the most powerful defensive charms. It is a complicated and extremely difficult spell that channels the witch or wizard's positive emotions into a powerful protection. When cast properly, it evokes a partially-tangible positive energy force known as a Patronus or spirit guardian, which acts as a shield between the witch or wizard and the dementor. The Patronus has two forms, non-corporeal and corporeal. It can appear as 'a thin wisp of silver' that hovers 'like mist' or it takes the shape of the animal with whom the witch or wizard shares the deepest affinity (which is more advanced and difficult). It is down to their skill in which form it appears. Each Patronus is unique to the one who conjures it, and it’s even possible, in some cases, for it to change. Harry's Patronus is a stag (a male deer) like his dad's. So it was, in a way, his dad who saved him. My Patronus is a Dun Mare (female horse), my wand is made of apple wood with a unicorn core, 11" & slightly yielding flexibility and I'm a proud Hufflepuff. When Lupin transforms into his werewolf form, Sirius asks "You didn't take your potion tonight?" In the book it is explained that Lupin has to take a special potion that, though it cannot prevent the transformation, it allows him to remain sane in werewolf form so that he cannot hurt anyone, including himself. But the trick is, it has to be taken every single day for two weeks before the full moon and even if one day is missed, it won't work. Snape, who saw Lupin and Sirius on the map on Lupin's desk (Lupin also saw Sirius), had been providing him with it and I assume he had it on him in the Shrieking Shack, but was knocked out by Harry before he could give it to Lupin. Also, Snape was the one who let slip that Lupin was a werewolf because he was angry that Sirius escaped. Easter Egg: When the twins open The Marauder's Map for the first time the name Newt Scamander can be seen, the main character in Fantastic Beasts. One theory suggests that Newt may have been at Hogwarts to save Buckbeak from execution, given his love for magical creatures. Though Newt was born in 1897 and this film takes place in 1993, which would make him 96 years old, you have to remember witches and wizards usually live longer than muggles. So it would have been perfectly reasonable for him to make a trip to Hogwarts when he was 96. It's almost universally agreed upon that the films did Ron dirty. One of the most notable ways was how most of his best lines were given to Hermione. In the book, Ron protects Harry against Sirius. Also, when Snape calls Hermione an "insufferable know it all" Ron sticks up for her and is put in detention, but in the film he agrees with Snape. When Hermione tells Hagrid that Draco must be taken to the hospital after harassing Buckbeak (which I think was more out of concern for Hagrid rather than Draco) you can see her wearing the time turner around her neck. Also, when Harry and Hermione travel back in time using the Time-Turner you can hear the ticking of a clock the whole time. In Latin, Lupin means wolf and Sirius means the "Dog Star" (the brightest star in the night sky) because it is part of the constellation Canis Major or "the greater dog", a clever hint to who the characters are. Furthermore, Pettigrew comes from the French words "Petit" and "gros" which means "small" and "fat". Never noticed it before but when Aunt Marge is insulting Harry's parents, Petunia laughs when she is insulting James but stops when she starts insulting Lily. I think, however much she may have resented her, Petunia loved her sister deep down. Some people don't think it's a real spell but knowing what we know now, it would make sense as to why Ron couldn't make Scabbers yellow in the first film — because the spell only works on rats. It is believed the reason it took so long for Lupin to conjure his Patronus on the train was because he was sleeping off a recent transformation. The dementors showed up during the Quidditch match because they feed on positive emotions and the audience was filled with it. And when Harry receives a feather with Firebolt in the end, it's one of Buckbeak's feathers (making it clear that the gift is from Sirius). Behind the scenes: As you know, after Richard Harris' death, Dumbledore was recast and from films 3-8 was played by Sir Michael Gambon (RIP). Sir Ian McKellen was considered for the role but he thought it was too similar to his role in LOTR. Also, David Thewlis (Lupin) was originally considered to play Professor Quirrell in Philosopher's Stone. And Pam Ferris who plays aunt Marge played Miss Trunchbull in Matilda (which I recommend if you haven't seen), another character who hates children. She also played a nun in the first 5 seasons of Call the Midwife (though a much nicer person than here or in Matilda). While filming the sleeping bag scene in the Great Hall after Sirius came to Hogwarts, Daniel Radcliffe had requested to have his sleeping bag next to a girl whom he liked at the time. Director Alfonso Cuarón, Michael Gambon and Alan Rickman played a practical joke on him by hiding a remote-control-operated Whoopee Cushion in his sleeping bag. Daniel tried really hard to stay in character. Hermione's "Is that what my hair looks like from the back?" was ad-libbed by Emma Watson due to her concern over her hair. The director loved it so much he kept it in the film. The filmmakers wanted to stray away from the traditional werewolf and instead portray it as a debilitating disease. Hence, Lupin in his werewolf form is depicted as emaciated and mostly hairless, making him look pitiful. After Harry rides Buckbeak and Draco pushes two kids away, one of them is Tom Ackerley, Margot Robbie's husband: https://youtu.be/MnlY-29TENo?si=cN1biCl-Fmo49b0O. If you watch at 0.25x speed and pause at 0:11 you can see him - He is the dark haired one on the left of the screen. At the time this film was released, Dawn French (a British comedian and icon) who played the Fat Lady was married to the actor who played the Shrunken Head on the Knight Bus (Lenny Henry). Finally, "Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light" is one of my favourite quotes.

Heida

Idk if you knew, but the actress who played Marge also played miss Trenchbull in Matilda. So you’re right about her being a perfect actress who hates children hahaha

Ryan Rothenbach

I love how much you love Harry Potter and it's so nice to be able to watch with you without having to get another screen! Thanks Alex! I think when you watch Lord of the Rings your going to get as addicted as you are to this series honestly.

“The dog is Serial Lupinus” 😭bro

Matthew

I love this one. There is only one mistake. Magic is forbidden by underage wizards and the movie starts with Harry using magic with the light thing.
