FINALLY!!!! We get to start the DC universe. We aren't necessarily going to do the same thing with DC that we did with Marvel (Marvel Mondays) but we are dipping our toes in the water now!
I REALLY enjoyed this movie and thought the cast was absolutely INSANE! That being said, my main criticism of this movie was that it lacked depth. I go into this WAY MORE in the reaction.
Let me know what you guys think of this film and what you think of DC vs. Marvel! I always thought of myself as a Marvel dude. idk though. Let's see!

Wearing a Superman T-shirt with only the glasses to disguise him and no one recognized him. So yes, no one would suspect an unassuming reporter who requires glasses to see to be the man flying around with heat vision and strong enough punch through a building. That debate has been settled for a while.

DC goes in knowing that we all (or at least most) already know who Clark is being that there were 5 Superman movies before this, and Smallville which is about Clark growing up in smallville and went on for like 10 years. Not to mention the DC animated shows and movies. I love both Marvel and DC just need to change my perspective on the childish fun side of marvel or the more complex mature story’s of DC. Great reaction tho, super fun!

Man of Steel is one of my all-time favorite movies BECAUSE of the emotions I felt, especially when Superman was forced to kill Zod. I think its probably like other commentators have said, most people go into it knowing the origins and canon already, so it might take less effort to make that connection. In any case, it might be worth a rewatch after you do some research or watch something like Smallville to give you more background. It's a phenomenal movie, and Henry Cavill is THE Superman, imo. Love you!! ❤️

The trailers made it look so good with the voiceover from Jor'El and the snow swirling around Superman's fist as he gathers energy to launch himself into flight, but I found the movie after about the first 30 minutes kind of one silly decision after another. There definitely isn't any depth whatsoever, another comment here says they're relying on people's knowledge of the story which is fair but also a bit silly for the filmmakers to do, if that were the case, not everyone is as old as me, or has my name xD The world engines... cool premise. But... why on earth would they, after having acknowledged the gravity manipulation, and trying to fire missiles in to the manipulated fields only to see them go haywire, would they ever send planes in *closer* to fire missiles which are just still going to go haywire, and not think "oh wait, planes probably are going to get messed up by that too". There's a lot of stupid things like this in the movie which annoys me a lot haha, but yeah. And the killing of Zod... just no. Superman's thing is that he does not kill. Hell, even in the old Mortal Kombat games (which are fairly famous for violent death animations and such), the Mortal Kombat vs DC game had superman in it and he could not kill his opponents. His finishers were called "Heroic Brutality" rather than "Fatality". They were still very violent, obviously, but yeah. I'm not even a comic book nerd (not that there's anything wrong with comic book nerds), but I know that much. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it. IMO the only really good DC movie is the first Wonder Woman movie, but watch them all and see what you think. I've watched the Snyder cuts of JL and BvS and didn't think they were really any improvement on the theatrical release, but I'm probably in the minority who think that. I did enjoy BvS more than MoS though, and was sad to find out that Affleck wasn't going to continue his role as Batman because I think he did a great job, but it is what it is. Have a great trip in Japan! Might go watch the punisher with you now :D

They are WILDLY different from what Warner Brothers released, especially Justice League by Joss Whedon who ruined that film after Zack's daughter went through a tragedy and he had to leave the film. They ruined the film, and their opportunity to ever battle Marvel at that time by doing so.

We either saw Smallville and met him as young Clark Kent or saw other Superman movies and met him as adult Clark Kent and loved his dorky ass. Plus, in those movies, Lois didn’t love him right away, she fell in love with Superman and had to figure out that he was Clark Kent and he had to win her as Clark. We didn’t see that in this movie. They relied on us already knowing the back story, which is fine for those of us GenX or maybe older Millennials but a lot of people only know Henry Cavill as Superman and didn’t get that.

Also, Lois knew Clark Kent was Superman from 30mins into the movie, she was putting up a show for the rest of her coworkers that she didn't know who he was to help conceal his secret identity. You are right, though, in that this (along with everything else in DC) is a lot of cool scenes stretched over surface level care.

2024-08-18 14:57:58 +0000 UTCI think you have a point about some of the narrative being rushed like Lois/Clark's connection but in regards to back story or how he developed powers, etc. - from a movie standpoint it's a bit hard to do all of that for a character that's so well known since then people would just complain they are being shown stuff everyone knows about the character. - Just a note make sure you watch Zach Snyder's version of justice league and not the theatrical release. It's much longer but a much fuller story with a lot more backstory on the characters in that movie.

A few years earlier from this, we got the reboot with Brandon Routh, and we had Smallville running for 10 seasons/11 years, and the OG films - all explained his origins of everything you mention (including trying out for sports teams and why he couldn't) - and people bitched about having to watch the "origins" again and again of Batman and Superman, if you think i'm wrong, go look up the headlines when those movies were announced.

This movie was built on the premise of people unlike you who were already familiar with Superman’s story. That said, I look forward to you continuing with the DC movies. They’re different from Marvel, not better or worse. Wonder Woman, in particular, will give you a lot of Captain America vibes (more war movie than superhero movie in many ways). Ultimately, they did a great job on Superman but less so on Clark Kent.

I enjoy the darker tones of DC, but their movies are usually a miss for me. But if you think about it, this Movie has probably the most Backstory for a Hero of any Super Hero movie. Like all other Hero movies I can think of there is maybe 1 or 2 scenes of their childhood/youth, if at all. Besides that, I liked the first half of the Movie, when it was more grounded and about Clark helping people. I am not a fan of the 2nd half that is basically just action and a cgi firework. And yeah the writing isn't that good. But I feel the same way about most Marvel movies nowadays.

Superman The Movie (1978) with Christopher Reeve still remains the best and most poignant one for me. That being said, Zack Snyder has a certain style to his movies that is visually captivating at times.

Superman is the big gun Wonderwoman is the versatile warrior Cyborg the tech expert being able to hack almost any type of tech Green lantern defensive fighter and creative thinker of the team. Either stopping massive hits for the big bads or saving civilians caught in the crossfire Aquaman the bridge between people and overall all rounder of the team Flash running interception, support and also being the secret weapon of the team having hidden powers that can even trump Superman Then finally bats as the strategist and Brains of the operation. and those are just one iteration of the original 7 members of the league comprising hundreds of different hero’s and sub teams bringing their own ideas to the fold Only other main crew missing id say is Martian Manhunter heart of the team being a great fighter but even better supporting the team Then one of my favorites Shazam he’s a middle ground between Superman and wonderwoman in terms of power being stronger than wonderwoman but lacking the combat experience to fight her. He is also one of the more sly members of the team, being a kid who loves pranks Heck some of the animated show even acknowledge that there are some enemies that only Superman can face. One movie literally has Batman let himself get taken hostage just so he can hack into alien tech to rescue their big gun (sups) to defeat the big back. You’d think them relying on Superman all the time would get boring but they manage to vary it up enough with the plots and set up to keep it interesting. And if even Superman can’t kill it that’s when things start to go very bad because in DC there are very few thing that can trump Superman

Snyder doesn't understand the character of Superman, and that continues in Batman V Superman (where he also shows he doesn't understand Batman), and his Justice League (where he shows he just doesn't really understand ANY of the DC heroes). But they are still watchable. But there's no contest between these DC films and Marvel. Marvel actually shows respect for their characters and that's why they are so much more successful.

Overall enjoyable, especially to someone on the outside of the fandom with not too much knowledge of the characters. Zack Snyder should’ve never been allowed to take control of the universe

Henry cavil crushed it but the writing and direction of the character is not Superman to me. In all of the dark heroes and themes Clark is the one man who brings light and hope to the scene. We don’t need to see him struggle with morality Superman should be the bar for morality

However, if you keen to dive in to a good origin, I do recommend it. For my sake you don’t have to make reactions videos of it, just enjoy it on your personal time.

But their live action stuff isn’t great they have a few good eggs but the majority are pretty rotten. But If I had to put marvel’s live action vs DC’s animation team dc wins ever time. The DCAU film series alone is god tier. And this isn’t even including DC’s elseworld stories (basically DC’s what if). Zod’s son as Superman in gods and monsters Bruce’s father becoming a gun toting acoholic Batman shit gets fkin badass

There's a lot of focus on his upbringing and the principles his parents passed on to him. It's incredible to watch! But there are 10 seasons, complicated, right? LOL

Also DC movies are more like different takes on the story as they don’t really tell the backstory they rely on people already knowing the story. The equivalent in MCU would be Spider-Man. Everyone knows the story so why cover the origins in depth.
