He’s even more of a badass than you think! Checkout the end of the citation! Desmond Doss Medal of Honor citation, verbatim: "The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private First Class Desmond Thomas Doss, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action above and beyond the call of duty from April 29 - 21 May, 1945, while serving with the Medical Detachment, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division, in action at Urasoe Mura, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands. Private First Class Doss was a company aid man when the 1st Battalion assaulted a jagged escarpment 400 feet high. As our troops gained the summit, a heavy concentration of artillery, mortar and machine gun fire crashed into them, inflicting approximately 75 casualties and driving the others back. Private First Class Doss refused to seek cover and remained in the fire-swept area with the many stricken, carrying them one-by-one to the edge of the escarpment and there lowering them on a rope-supported litter down the face of a cliff to friendly hands. On 2 May, he exposed himself to heavy rifle and mortar fire in rescuing a wounded man 200 yards forward of the lines on the same escarpment, and two days later he treated four men who had been cut down while assaulting a strongly defended cave, advancing through a shower of grenades to within eight yards of enemy forces in a cave's mouth, where he dressed his comrades' wounds before making four separate trips under fire to evacuate them to safety. On 5 May, he unhesitatingly braved enemy shelling and small arms fire to assist an artillery officer. He applied bandages, moved his patient to a spot that offered protection from small arms fire and, while artillery and mortar shells fell close by, painstakingly administered plasma. Later that day, when an American was severely wounded by fire from a cave, Private First Class Doss crawled to him where he had fallen 25 feet from the enemy position, rendered aid, and carried him 100 yards to safety while continually exposed to enemy fire. On 21 May, in a night attack on high ground near Shuri, he remained in exposed territory while the rest of his company took cover, fearlessly risking the chance that he would be mistaken for an infiltrating Japanese and giving aid to the injured until he was himself seriously wounded in the legs by the explosion of a grenade. Rather than call another aid man from cover, he cared for his own injuries and waited five hours before litter bearers reached him and started carrying him to cover. The trio was caught in an enemy tank attack, and Private First Class Doss, seeing a more critically wounded man nearby, crawled off the litter and directed the bearers to give their first attention to the other man. Awaiting the litter bearers' return, he was again struck, this time suffering a compound fracture of one arm. With magnificent fortitude he bound a rifle stock to his shattered arm as a splint and then crawled 300 yards over rough terrain to the aid station. Through his outstanding bravery and unflinching determination in the face of desperately dangerous conditions, Private First Class Doss saved the lives of many soldiers. His name became a symbol throughout the 77th Infantry Division for outstanding gallantry far above and beyond the call of duty. General Orders: War Department, General Orders No. 97 (November 1, 1945)."

if you have a list to add to I would add Band of brothers, my personal favorite series of all time!

Niklas Brün

Have you thought of watching Tick Tick Boom? Andrew Garfield did an awesome job in that one too.

Jonathon Farr

I knew you would love this movie

TiaPesi

Yes, God is good. Everyday. I love this movie so much. I have PTSD, not from the military, but from the war I know as my life. It breaks my heart to watch his dad suffer with it but it's depicted very accurately in this movie. Everytime I watch this I'm filled with so much hope and joy knowing that anything is possible. It's a tear jerker for sure! Thanks for the reaction....awesome as always! Love ya!

Jessica Houser

defs worth checking out black hawk down after this one

Cooper Cutting

Gosh darn it Alex! Stop distracting me from school 😂

Tanster

Alex, my life has been one dark day after another lately, but watching this movie with you brought a sense of peace into my life that I haven't felt in a very long time. Excellent reaction. Excellent movie. And yes, God is good.

LoganPool

After watching this you should check out tye Fat Electricians video on the 77th. Desmond was a part of it.

Nick

All you need? No need for Hunger Games, Transformers, Lord of the Rings, DCEU, Daredevil, Harry Potter Re-Watch, Rest of Invincible, Planet of the Apes, Monster Trilogy, etc?!?!?!

Alex Hefner

Saving Private Ryan and The Band of Brother’s mini series completely changed my perspective on WWII and just the absolutely terrifying realities of war and companionship between soldiers. Hacksaw Ridge and Unbroken are two of the most beautifully heroic movies about ordinary people doing extraordinary things through faith in war. All four are must watchs, I hope you are able to get around to the Band of Brothers Mini Series one day; it’s the most masterpiece of all of them

Adam

Finally! Now all we need is the Hangover trilogy!

Tanster

This was an amazing movie. I'm not religious but it's an amazing testament to faith. Even if it's not faith in a god or a religion, having a faith in your conviction so unwavering, it's impossible to live with regret

Dale Diaz

KP is lunch lady duty. You prep food, serve, clean up. Stands for kitchen patrol

Dale Diaz

that dinner scene with the dad talking about the son's uniform has me sobbing every time i see it. I just think about how the dad felt. How he lost all his friends, got traumatized from war, feels like he ruined himself as a father and a husband, all for the sake of protecting his family. And to see his son willingly go into war anyway, imagine how broken his heart must be, in that moment it felt like everything he went through was for nothing. In his eyes, worst case scenario his son never comes back, best case scenario he winds up lilke himself, which he doesn't want for anyone. It's so gut wrenching

Dale Diaz

low key desmond's wife and yours look pretty similar too!

Dale Diaz

Can't wait to watch this movie with you! It topped Saving Private Ryan as my favorite war movie. And Andrew Garfield delivered a STELLER performance!

LoganPool

I just love Jonathan Larson's work. Rent was also great. I'm not really a musical guy but his songs hit different for me. Especially Tick, Tick... Boom! because it's his own biography. Only other musical stuff I liked was Les Misérables.

YannickWega

Desmond Doss was a true hero in every way imaginable ...

ColeB

i literally just finished watching that, after reading your comment. It's a quality movie but I don't feel that it covers anything new - just the same romantic love songs. Quality movie!! Just, not groundbreaking in any way.

Logan Kerlee

Hey Alex! I noticed while watching you thought dawes was stabbed. He wasn't. Thankfully the Japanese soldier stabbed at an angle so it hit the top guy and not him. I missed it my first time to

Kupper

“Surprised boy didn’t get off the f***ing stretcher and save people”” Funny you say that because the real Doss actually did. They just cut that from the movie because they were worried it wouldn’t be believable. 😅

BeePrimeGaming

“Please Lord. Help me get one more.” That scene brings tears to my eyes.

BeePrimeGaming

I strongly second this suggestion!

Logan Kerlee

Hell yeah, dude!! Be your awesome self, dude! xD You're the best!! hahahahaha Don't worry dude - this'll be a rough one but you'll make it through. :) It's all good, my guy. I've watched this before, so I know what to expect. This is an amazing film that's worth watching. Don't feel bad for living the life that you've lived. I don't feel bad for living mine - granted I'm in a wheelchair and that's the reason why I'm not in the military. lmao, yeah - this isn't the movie for those jokes. xD This movie requires a higher tier of respect than that. Desmond definitely has game! He worked his way into that movie date in no time. War is awful for everyone. The people at home waiting and the men away in other countries. Obviously both sides are struggling in different ways but each side has their own struggle. lol, yeah, this is a different type of role for him. This was the first one I saw with him. Vince Vaughn's one cool dude. KP duty means "kitchen police" or "kitchen patrol" work under the kitchen staff assigned to junior U.S. enlisted military personnel. The issue is, every person in the military at that time was expected to carry a weapon and serve as a soldier, regardless of their personal feelings or beliefs. Killing a nazi/Jap was just expected and that's all there was to it. lmao, yeah, no - it doesn't work that way. I've got a huge head as well. xD My older brother's nickname for me has always been Big Head! xD hahaha lol, nips is just the slang for Japanese person at this point in ww2. "The word Nip is an abbreviation from Nippon (日本), the Japanese name for Japan. Usage of the term Nips in the 1944 American cartoon Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips." lol, just noticed - why did your timer reset at the two hour mark? xD I mean, I'm glad that I noticed, but still. I'm very happy that I was able to watch this with you, man. This is a beautiful film that's very important and vital to American history. Andrew Garfield did a phenomenal job playing this person. While I'm unsure of how much of this film is completely accurate - I can say that I don't care, this was made so well that it doesn't matter. The point of the story was told in the most effective way possible and it affected me (and everyone else) quite a bit! I'm over here still wiping my eyes, after finishing the film.

Logan Kerlee

This is 💯. Truly inspiring film

BeePrimeGaming

Yeah this movie is truly amazing. Seeing it lose polls was heartbreaking. If you continue with polls where you choose the options, i suggest throwing kill bill and the departed on there. Youll love em both

jamie jones

Andrew Garfield is an amazing actor trough and trough! I highly recommend watching/reacting to "Tick, Tick... Boom!" he was also Oscar nominated for that film.

YannickWega

yess ive been waiting for this my gooch can relax now

Wick

oh yeah Alex.. you have to watch the Band of Brothers mini series. the episodes go fast. Very worth the time and watch. It's the European side of WW2. Following Easy Company. Produced by Spielberg and Tom Hanks

Ryan Towell

WW2 medics are some of the ballsiest dudes in the war. My Great Uncle was one. He never married and just moved back in with his mom. every time I visited my great grandma I just remember he always sat out back next the garage smoking and just staring.. Very quiet guy. Although, he did come to visit us at our home once and he taught me how to shoot to a rifle when I was about 10. But, again very quiet, never talked much you could just tell he lived a few lifetimes just within those couple years in WW2.

Ryan Towell

They said, if anything, they slightly underplayed the depiction of parts of the heroism. Because it was felt that it would be too unbelievable for the film.
