The way I've always viewed the force working was something that took concentration. The more they use the force on something or many things, the more concentration it takes. Also depending on the strength of certain things as well as you will see later on in clone wars/star wars as a whole. As an example the one episode when Anakin was holding the explosion back before they crash landed. He was trying to concentrate because of the force/strength of the blast. They can't just use it on everything and it be easy enough for them to not be vulnerable to get attacked.
