Welp, you may or may not have gotten your first listen to Ludwig Goränsson on this awesome soundtrack. Whenever you get to The Mandalorian, he's all over that series.

2025-01-23 05:02:39 +0000 UTCThe song "Russians" by Sting contains the phrase "Oppenheimers deadly toy". Very neat description of the power the bomb had. It got me into reading who Oppenheimer was. Before watching the movie I also didn't know much about him as it had been a while since I had read the Wiki article about him. I love that for one of the german teachers they chose Matthias Schweighöfer to represent him. He is perfect in his role as the slimy guy.

2024-05-06 18:34:31 +0000 UTCSo, I'm a bit late with this one, but, Alex I loved your reaction. For a Nuclear Physics nerd like myself, this movie was sooo good on so many levels. As for Oppenheimer... you should do a youtube search for his interviews. in the 60s he talked extensively about the bomb, and his part in it. The saddest thing was... he KNEW it was a terrible thing.. but he felt he HAD to build it... because at least then... the country he loved so much would know the right thing to do with it.. which in Oppenheimer's mind was to never use it. And he was swayed by the War Secretary's comments about the bomb would save lives.. and in my opinion, it probably did. The Japanese were beat by 1945, but they would not surrender. If they hadn't done something so divisive, the war would have dragged on in the Pacific much much longer... and the death toll on both sides would have been higher, so... in some ways, the bomb DID save lives.... but the cost. At least what Strauss said was true... Oppenheimer was remembered for Trinity, and Los Alamos, and not Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

2024-03-27 07:18:22 +0000 UTCI dont think it was about the movie being reaction worthy. At least for me the concern was more that it just didnt fit Alex' style of reacting to stuff. He likes to make funny remarks and go on tangents while watching a movie which fits most movies really well. But this movie is so packed with information, that missing bits of it repeatedly can make it really confusing and tough to watch because you dont know whats going on anymore. Especially if you didnt have much prior knowledge about the topic. But apparently it turned out just fine and I'm happy it did :)

2024-03-25 06:07:39 +0000 UTCYou're not the only one who didn't know who Oppenheimer was. I only knew him because of the Linkin Park album "A Thousand Suns" which samples him saying "Now I am become death, destroyer of worlds"

2024-03-19 02:33:30 +0000 UTCyou should check out the making of this movie, it was truly something else. and yes, your confusion about jean tatlock's death in warranted because no one truly knows what happened. some people believe the manhattan project intelligence agents murdered jean, and they staged her death as a suicide thus the traces of sedatives in her body and the unsigned note (who doesn't sign a letter then proceeds to submerge exclusively their head in a tub?). but most believe it was suicide; she was struggling with depression, which was fuelled by her confusion about her sexual orientation. jean tatlock lead a tragic life, trapped by the confining walls of the period she lived in.
