Man the alternate ending is so much better, they hinted towards there being a leader zombie or them having some sentience. Even drawing the butterfly on the broken glass and showing the butterfly on the zombie leaders "partner". The mannequin being moved in the streets to lure him into a trap. Not to mention there's now intentions to make a sequel to this movie with the alternate ending cannon.. as well as being closer to the original books. Really don't understand people liking the original ending, it was only more impactful in theaters when there was no intent for a sequel imo.

Ryan Bellefleur

Literally all the other movies on the polling list are infinitely better than that shittyass film

I was finally able to finish watching this reaction, so glad you liked it and I think it has many positive aspects to it, one of them being Will Smith's talenting in acting. The hardest scene (Neville having to end Sam's life) gets me everytime. I've had many dogs over the years and just recently had to put down my best friend of almost 16 years. He was the best dog I've ever had, loyal, loving and undoubtedly the kindest dog one could have. He made me a better human! R.i.p. Dolce, miss you buddy! My favorite aspect about this movie is the fact that it shows the affect profound isolation has on a person, psychological toll of being isolated for years. Neville grappling with survivor's guilt, feeling responsible for the pandemic due to his involvement in the creation of the virus. The psychological burden adds depth to Will's character. As well as how KV amplifies aggression and loss of empathy, emphasizing the fragility of civilization, how easily we are steered by emotions (eg. where Neville lost Sam and started being recless, with no regard to his own safety) but especially the human need for communication and connection, even if it's with an uncertain audience (eg. talking to the mannequins, his dog, recording himself, etc.). As for the cinematography, the use of wide angle shots, capture the emptiness of the city, creating a haunting and lonely atmosphere. Close-up shots, to convey the emotional toll. The subtly adjustments of the color palette in shots, reflected the different emotional tone. I found it interesting to learn that, Neville's home, and the abandoned buildings were constructed on practical sets. Thank you again for yet another amazing reaction! Can't wait for the next one!

Actually they were Vampire like, in the book they were Vampires the book is so good

Might do the audio book at work, thanks!

So this is the thing that annoys me Alex. The book that this movie is based on is a BANGER, and they changed a couple key things that in my opinion kind of ruin the story slightly. Stop reading now if for some reason you don't want the book spoiled. Also they're technically vampires not zombies. The book explains it better, but basically the virus is a degenerative disease that makes them crave blood, and eventually their body and minds decompose and they become zombie-like. 1) the dog. In the book, Robert Neville is totally alone from when we first find him. He sees the dog in the wild and it's really scared of people (understandably) he spends MONTHS building trust with the dog, leaving food out at first, then standing outside with the food, then sitting near the food, then he finally gets to pet him. Then the next time he sees the dog, it's been bitten and he's foaming at the mouth and clearly been infected. 2) In the book, Robert Neville spends every day clearing the city of zombies while they're nesting during the daylight. Eventually he finds out that the vampires developed a drug to prevent the degenerative aspect of their disease and have established civilization and learned how to cope with their disease. They end up capturing Robert Neville and as he's facing execution in the vampire civilization, he realized he became to vampires what vampires were to humans. That's what "I am legend" actually means. He was the legend that vampires told each other about

Yeah, it's REAL easy to miss that the mannequin that's wearing the hoodie that he calls Fred is the same mannequin that he made the comment to about the hoodie outside of the video store. That's why Neville acts the way he does about it--he's confused because Fred's supposed to be outside of the video store where he left him, not outside of Grand Central (where the vampire zombie things moved him to), and it makes him start questioning his sanity, which was, as we all probably noticed, already kind of teetering as it was. And he was so distracted by his paranoia and flipping out because of the fact Fred wasn't where he was supposed to be that he didn't even recognize he was walking into a trap. The filmmakers went a little too vague with it, though, and don't do a great job of suggesting that it's a trap set up for Robert, not one he set up for the vampire-zombies.

Jessica Meigs

Well, this one is not available on any streaming platforms, and I don't want to take to the high seas for it either. Sittin this one out. Hope you enjoy, Alex!

Farva

Thanks for explaining the trap thing. I somehow never connected the trap to the zombies. I guess in my mind they were so firmly categorized as not sentient that the possibility of them trapping him never even occured to me. I was always just confused about that scene and thought it was him losing his mind and walking into one of his old traps since it is built exactly like the one he uses earlier in the movie. But them trapping him cause he took someone important to them makes a lot more sense. That makes me view the story in a completely different light. Also will definitely have a look at the book now that I know that the movie is based on one.

MasterElodin

Just to add too, if you are much of a reader, definitely read I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. It's a classic in post-apocalyptic literature. And if anybody here feels like reading one of my books in the genre...well, the first one is a freebie at the moment lol. Just search my name on your ebook retailer of choice and have at it haha.

Jessica Meigs

*clears throat* So as a post-apocalyptic aficionado and writer, I like this movie, even though the ending is TRASH (compared to the book). The ending that got released (the one in the movie) COMPLETELY changes the meaning of what Richard Matheson (the author of the book this movie is based off of) intended for his story--that Dr. Neville is the "legend," as in the boogieman story that the supposed "monsters" told their kids about, because the doctor would come during the day and steal away their people, do experiments on them/torture them, and then kill them. So the whole premise of I Am Legend is supposed to be that ROBERT is the monster, not them. They ~sort of hint at this in the movie with the alpha vampire thing (for lack of other wording) being so determined to get his woman back, but they really do a very poor job of making it clear that Robert, from the "vampires" POV, is the bad guy, not them. They've just come in and replaced humanity as the dominant lifeform on Earth. Also, yes, they're capable of higher thought--they set up the trap that caught Robert, and they did so by reasoning their way through/studying the traps he was using to catch THEM and turning it around on him. Also, lastly, I wouldn't call this a zombie movie. It's more of a post-apocalyptic vampire type movie than anything else. :)

Jessica Meigs

Actually insane how true it is what you said about your dog lol. Its the exact same for me. Had tears in my eyes from the fckn dog scene and then you just spit facts 😂

MasterElodin

Well i like this movie .. ,but i dont get it how it made to pool i was looking at the comments and it pop here and there but there was some other choices with more likes fur sure

roberts veselis

Totally agree with everything you just said 🙌 Once again, I don’t blame Alex for this, I blame the Patreon members. That’s why a bunch of forgettable, mediocre movies are getting churned out. And yeah I totally enjoyed this when it first came out! But would I revisit it now? Does it have staying power? In my opinion, hell no 😂

Ruarí Kelsey

How about a schedule for the week??

David Chamberlain

Django lost to this due to the electoral college I guess lol. Thats why I don't vote.

Magus

Wheres django?

jamie jones

the structure of the voting is such a shit show i imagine half the people can be bothered to click "load more comments" 100x to see all the movies people are suggesting so basically what evers in the first 20-30 comments is probably likely to get the most votes then from that he makes a shorter list. i recall enjoying this movie but dont remember a damn thing about it so not sure what that means never had any interest in revisiting it though so..

Magus

Not really, there are movies from decades ago that are incredibly relevant now, that’s the beauty of a good story. And I think it’s great that he lets us vote too! I just wish people used their votes more wisely. That’s a totally fair enough thing to say! Just like it’s totally fair enough for someone to vote for this or Edge of Tomorrow or some other filler Hollywood film like that. People have the right to do that and other people have the right to voice their opinion on it. That’s what both democracy and art are about.

Ruarí Kelsey

"It’s not about taste, it’s about relevance." Well, by that argument, if we went with strictly relevance, we'd only be watching movies made in the last five years. I think it's a good thing that Alex 1. lets us all vote on these movies and 2. that he doesn't restrict it so he (and others) are exposed to movies they might not otherwise have seen before.

Jessica Meigs

I don’t think it’s being shitty, just pointing out that no one talks about/cares about this film years on whereas people do talk about/care about the Star Wars films. I don’t really care for the Hunger Games but the same applies to them, they are still talked about. It’s not about taste, it’s about relevance.

Ruarí Kelsey

I mean you could argue the same point for star wars. I'm not saying I Am Legend is better than Star Wars, cause it definitely isn't, but this is all taste. Maybe you dont care about it now but many people apparently still do. Also its a great movie to just turn your brian off and enjoy like someone else put it. Basically just dont be this shitty about peoples opinions/taste cause it doesn't help anyone.

MasterElodin

Really wish Social Network won, hopefully we get that to win soon!

Brayden Frazier

Ahh fair enough. I still wish people on here voted for better films 😂

Ruarí Kelsey

Star Wars is always on friday if i'm not mistaken.

IGOR PODEMSKI

I thought Django was next.

Collin Olson

REVENGE OF THE SIIIITH

Chris Robson

Excited for this one... I've already imagined your reactions to several parts and I know you'll yell plenty of times from the noise 😆

PepperJelly

Nooo 😭 I’m not blaming Alex for this, why are people on here voting for such meh movies? Like this was popular when it came out but who cares about it now? Thought we might get some Star Wars or the Boys today 🙄

Ruarí Kelsey

Where’s Django?

Josh Wilson

This before Django? Howcome?
