This version of the Guardians (there have been two others) was comprised of little-know or cast-off characters from 60's & 70's Marvel comics. Dave Bautista's Drax was based on the fourth iteration of the character. Originally, he was a human who was killed by Thanos on Earth, then resurrected. The soundtrack was comprised of songs that influenced director James Gunn when he was growing up.

The only real significance of meeting John C. Reilly's family at the end is that you recognize his wife and daughter from when they were almost killed on the bridge a little earlier when Ronan's ships were dive bombing the city. It's just to drive home that he meant it when he said his family is still alive because of the Guardians, not just in a general way because they saved the whole planet, but specifically, because Rocket and the Ravagers put themselves between Ronan's forces and the city. As Onno said, Marvel had sold off the movie rights to a lot of their characters back in (I think) the 80s. It kept the comic book company afloat, but it meant that they didn't have the rights to many of their own characters. I agree that putting out a Guardians of the Galaxy movie was a huge risk at the time. I had been more than a casual Marvel reader back in the 80s and early 90s, and I'd never heard of them, so non-comic book fans or more casual readers certainly wouldn't have either. By the time this movie came out, though, they'd built up a fair amount of credit with movie-goers, and then of course, the movie knocks it out of the park, which just gave them even more credit going forward. They took a risk and it paid off in a big way!

I agree. I think Age of Ultron got shafted a bit on release--but I mean, it was following up on the heels of Winter Soldier and Guardians, and I think people had set their expectations way higher. Ultron comes off as more of a set-up for the rest of the MCU after that, and IMO, it was a necessary set-up that had to happen for the rest of the events in the following movies to happen. It's super important, but it's one of the first ones to get tossed when people are making "must watch" lists.

Loving these MCU reactions man! All MCU film characters are the "lesser known characters", as Marvel had sold the movie rights to all their well-known characters (e.g. Spider-Man, X-Men) to other movie studios in the years prior to starting Marvel Studios. It's partly how they managed to fund the creation of the first Iron Man movie, whose profits were then reinvested into future MCU movies, ad infinitum. Next week is Avengers: Age of Ultron, which is one of my personal favourites. It was a bit less well received at the time of release, but I think it has since become more appreciated, for all the things it sets up for future movies.
