Small=Free hand Large=Transfer

I make a line drawing with the pen stylis. I basically just draw over a photograph. This is a medium sized work 42 x 36 1/2“ . Why you might ask do I make my cartoons not full valued? Number one: the printer ink would be too expensive and number two: if the cartoon is subtracted down to it lines again it reminds me of the doodle that I began with, and I can check in with the linear design once more before I transfer it. It feels confidence boosting that my linear design is doing what I want because sometimes when you see things in full value, you can get seduced by the strength of the image and the colors, and maybe forget about some of the larger broader design elements.
I do not use a projector. I like the stamped look of an oil transfer. The pressed lines, pressed onto the canvas, redrawn. It feels more satisfying to me. It’s just a different thing.
I’m in a stage right now now where the works are kind of teetering on the edge of the symbolic, which makes them feel more ancient, and then the photographic, which is of course because I’m working from photographic images. The photographic can bring them back to reality sometimes”.
