Form Pass over Grisaille

In this new painting I’m reconnecting with a more historical technique of making a monochromatic grisaille underpainting with the pigments Raw Umber and Lead White on a hand prepared linen. The linen has a Neutral Gray #7 Golden Acrylic Ground. This allows for one opaque pass to be applied with the “Alla Prima” sectional (window shading) approach. Premixing robust piles of paint is very important for this technique (see palette pic).

Hi, Colleen. I saw with great surprise that your *source* had similar colors to your final work; i.e., the flesh was yellow. Will told me he does extensive image manipulation before he starts painting but you had said a few years ago that you do not. The fact that the floor in your photo is violet tells me you didn't make this change (yellow flesh) via the lighting with, say, a yellow gel, because the violet floor would have gone to grey. I had always assumed you make up these colors that aren't realistic. So what's going on with the colors? because the color decisions are one of the most important parts of your work.

Hi Colleen, how do you prepare your linen?
