Sneak-Peek-Week #2

Now I took longer than expected to finish the workshop, so you'll know I've been itching to test out resin printing (which I'm planning for an upcoming board game video) - it's actually a great example of Elegoo as they've been super cool about me just enjoying their stuff, rather than pushing for an video.

But whilst I've taken my time, they've been busy releasing even more great upgrades, so they suggested I just try out their Saturn 4 Ultra 16K as they were super excited about some of the upgrades they'd built in... boy it's a beast!! (waaaay bigger than the Mars!).

Going to enjoy this one - I've got designs for a smart enclosure to make resin printing super easy to do, so look out for those - any resin printers get in touch too, I want to pick all your brains!!

I printed resin for a couple of years on the MonoX. I did a lot of DND figures and terrain (I was a Loot Studios subscriber for several years). Quality is amazing. Failures weren't uncommon for me but I haven't investigated new resin printers lately. My machine is still sitting here, but unused for a while. The mess and the chemicals are no fun. You definitely want a washing and curing station. If you are even thinking about working with resin, put on gloves. Good ventilation is a necessity. You will need to plan for disposal of excess resin and what you wash printed pieces in. Teach little ones to never touch any of it. Not sure if you want to get into something like painting minis, but that's what I did and I got to the point where I years of backlog to paint so I really needed to stop, regardless of how cool they all looked. I have some cool items to work on during bad weather and some neat dioramas and such. I do love that part. Resources to buy stl file sets or design your own are everywhere now. Much easier to get a wide variety of paints, brushes and supplies too. Now, if I could take a printed mini and put in a Eufy Make and let it do the "painting" that would be awesome.

Interested to hear how the Saturn 4 Ultra works for you. I had a Mars and it worked great, until it didn't after about 18 mohths, the mainboard on the washer failed, then I started getting inconsistent exposure across the plate, then the mainboard on the UV dryer failed. All three components dead within two years. (Then there's that, "no one told me to model a drain hole into my resin models issue where after about 26 months some of my first models starting cracking open with uncured resin seeping out. That was the end of the line for me resin-wise.)

Billy Connolly once said "Never trust a man who, when left alone in a room with a tea cosy, doesn't try it on". I guess Pic 6 is the logical step forward from a tea cosy :D
