Longstanding annoyance fixed?

About 6–7 years ago, I installed Tado v2 Thermostats throughout my home. The system has been... meh/underwhelming. For every problem it solved, it seemed to create another. For instance, room-by-room control was a great feature, but it came with terrible battery life and, I kid you not, no support for rechargeable batteries at launch!! On a deeper level, the software architecture has been quite poor, to the point where I’ve essentially replaced their app and...urgh subscription offerings with Home Assistant.

But, the new Tado X range caught my attention, and I decided to test them out. On paper, they seem to address nearly all my frustrations with the old system. They're fully Matter-compliant, meaning they integrate seamlessly with all major smart home platforms (including Home Assistant!). Additionally, this permits a mesh network that should significantly improve connection stability (another niggle they had in the previous versions). Crucially, these upgrades enable local control, which lets me bypass Tado’s flaky cloud infrastructure. The hardware also features USB-C rechargeable long-life batteries and several other upgrades.

However, the setup experience was pretty bumpy. The instructions were poor — packed with “dummy guides” for upgrading from other systems but inexplicably left out instructions for upgrading from their own! In the end, I figured out the wiring myself, thanks to the helpful diagrams and markings from their hardware engineers. Likewise configuring the TRVs is a strange fight between native matter detection and Tado's app as my phone kept popping up over the app to try and take over set up - that said, Google's set up process was far more reliable than Tado's, so it was probably worthwhile.

So it's a weird mix of mediocre software and impressive hardware. That said now everything is set up, I can largely ignore the clunky app and setup process. And if the Tado X performs as promised, it might actually turn out to be really rather good after all.....

Not sure I'd give the same company another chance from 6-7 years of misery.

Coincidentally, I'm having a new boiler installed next week, and it's being fitted with Tado V3+ valves, that were delivered yesterday. My preference would have been for the Tapo/Kasa valves as I already have some Tapo devices in my smart setup, but they don't make a thermostat :/ I think that the innards come from the same source though; the battery compartment cover is identical, although Tado's is in the base so you have to remove the valve to change the battery rather than lift the lid on the Kasa. Who needs ergonomics anyway? :/

I’ve had the opposite experience. Had the old Tado system and loved it. It made our house much cosier and I had no issues with it. We’ve moved now so I bought into Tado-X with an upgrade offer and I noticed that after about a month I progressively lost connection over a few days to most of the TRVs. Sorted now, so fingers crossed that it won’t be a recurring issue.

I've not played with matter yet. From what I've seen it's not entirely stable yet. But I'm not sure if that means somethings don't work at all, but once they start working they stay working

Definitely - exactly what I want to test!! Given it's just a matter integration, I'm pretty optimistic!

Please give an update after a few months of how they are working with home assistant
