A bad workwoman blames...... ;)

Well I've been saving up to upgrade my camera set up - in the hope this will improve my videos a bit!!

So it's just arrived and I'm playing around with all the new buttons! This is a Sony FX3 and it's got some super neat features that will save me lots of time, but it's also just a better camera (full frame) so it should allow some great footage!

Wow!! @John Danmeyer, @Greg Staten - Thank you, that was a very informational crash course. Much appreciated ๐Ÿ‘

Just checked out the E 24-70 mm F2.8 GM. https://www.sony.ca/en/electronics/camera-lenses/sel2470gm Bright, fast F2.8 at any focal length Keep exposure settings constant throughout the zoom range to maintain low-light capability or action-stopping shutter speeds with consistently spectacular image quality. You have a winner there. Nice lens.

Love it!! ๐Ÿ˜

Good description of Bokeh here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh

John Dammeyer

Ooh definitely, do let me know if you pick up any tips or ideas!! I'm thinking really hard about this at the moment as I'm trying to minimise the setup time as much as I possibly can!!

Hands on Katie

Ooh, good idea, didn't think of that!!

Oh so much to learn!!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

They are!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

OMG those pants look soooo comfy.

Honestly I've never played with the remote pan/tilt systems, but they do exist, I'm just not sure how expensive they are! Manfrotto tripods are known for their easy leveling and an extremely smooth pan and tilt due to the way they are balanced and how they handle the start of a move (i.e., not jerky at all but a nice ease in to start the motion.) Remote camera systems have been widely in use in broadcast news for a couple of decades. Indeed, most local news broadcasts use entirely robotic multicamera systems, driven entirely from the control booth. I haven't looked into whether those have moved downmarket, as it were, but I may be going to NAB (National Association of Broadcasters conference) in April (have skipped the past couple of years) and if I do I'll take a look at what's available.

Greg Staten

If anything, Edelkrone have standalone pan heads you can put on any other old tripod like a Manfrotto or a Miller which can then do a motorized auto-pan.

Nice camera too.

I'm no camera expert, but if it allows for good angles, then I'm all for it. Great work! ๐Ÿ‘

The other item I have that has ended up on the NIKON D800 almost full time (unless I need the MACRO lens) is the 24mm-120mm f4 Telephoto lens. What makes this special aside from the way too small f4 is that whatever the lens opening is set to, it remains there regardless of the zoom. So if I set up the lighting and the depth of field focus for f5.6 for example I can zoom from 24mm to 120mm and not have the f-stop change. Most telephotos may have a larger opening like f2.8 but it's f8 at full 120mm or 200mm. So what you have to do as you zoom out/in is constantly adjust the f stop in order to have the same brightness in the video. Or if that's not an issue the depth of field changes.

John Dammeyer

Ah right, brilliant explanation, that makes total sense!! I'll have a closer look and that might be a good option!

The head, MH055M8-Q5, has both photo and movie mode. It frees up motion in all directions as opposed to fixed horizontal or vertical portrait mode. From the web site: "This ingenious photo head is designed with integral fluid cartridges and adjustable balance control, which gives you accurate framing every time. The ball head allows you to move quickly and without any hitches along the way, and you can pan and tilt a full 360ยฐ with smooth friction control when you need to capture a great shot double-quick. Itโ€™s even flexible enough to suit right and left hand users. Just use the easy to find reversible function on the tripod leg to customize your tripod head. " So when you pan on a shot it's silky smooth. With the flip of a lever and button the camera also slides off the head for some hand held work. The ability to adjust the balance when I have a larger lens like my D800 Nikon Telephoto means it doesn't constantly tip forward or back. Want to go back to portrait mode just flip the lever and move the camera until it clicks. There are several bubble levels so you can ensure everything is as flat as the earth is. (ha ha). Likely there are other tripod heads out there that do this too. But as Greg mentioned Manfrotto and that is what I have I thought I'd add my 2 pesos. Oh wait, I'm back in Canada. Two cents worth.

John Dammeyer

I've got two, one is the 24-70 and the other is a lovely f1.2 20 lens that you'll see in the video tomorrow!! Gives a lovely bokeh (look at me, I'm learning all these terms!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ“ท)

Hey John! Check my response to Greg, be great to get your brains on it too!! Forgive my complete ignorance, but what does 'video mode' mean? What does it change on the tripod?!

Hands on Katie

I've 'just' received my new Edelkrone Flextilt tripod and it seems excellent so far! For me it's about size, speed to set up and the ability to get it to automatically pan/tilt and so on, so I can juggle!! I really liked the look of their tripod X, but the app reviews are terrible, so I'm not spending a huge amount for a dud app! (Hardware seems solid, so it's a shame!) I will have a look at Manfrotto as I need to get a better option for smooth panning shots, it'd just be great if there was one that could automatically do it for when I'm recording myself doing something!!

Hands on Katie

I second using Manfrotto. I have this head: https://www.manfrotto.com/ca-en/magnesium-photo-movie-tripod-head-with-quick-release-plate-mh055m8-q5/ Mounted on this Tripod: https://www.cameralabs.com/manfrotto_055xprob_tripod/ The video mode for panning is especially handy.

John Dammeyer

I hope it gives you the quality and flexibility you deserve. Looking great

Ken

Nice! Do you have a quality tripod to go with it? I'm a huge fan of Manfrotto as the head is soooo smooth for tilts and pans.

Greg Staten

Canโ€™t wait to see how it expends your creativity and elevates your production levels. Given your already amazing videos/photo montages are, thatโ€™s setting the bar pretty high. ๐Ÿ˜

Chris Lambert

Hope you enjoy using it, but your videos were already great

Simon

And a proper G Master lens to go along with it! Well done! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Is that the 24-70?
