Pain and Pleasure!

Going hard at the roof this week, been battling through gaps in the weather - final straight now that I'm in the zone!! Everything is going to be soooo much easier in comparison once this roof is on! Laying the floor is child's play in comparison!

But I'm easing my aches and pains, whilst thawing each night with a sauna for a good day's work!!

Shout out to my new drone, who I think I'm calling Lex-Wing who took these photos. It's a super cool upgrade to my old one as it allows me to create cool panning, zooming shots just by selecting a target and it'll film away - so this will allow me to self-create some nice shots and make even better videos!!

Pain and Pleasure! Pain and Pleasure! Pain and Pleasure! Pain and Pleasure! Pain and Pleasure! Pain and Pleasure! Pain and Pleasure! Pain and Pleasure! Pain and Pleasure! Pain and Pleasure! Pain and Pleasure! Pain and Pleasure! Pain and Pleasure! Pain and Pleasure!

Wise word, too often true!

Murphy's law of programming: Constants aren't, variables won't... :D

Bazza McSpleen

I'm super close - although it's -4C overnight and peaks of 1C today, so not the most pleasant - annoyingly it's back up to 13C this Saturday, but taking the kids out!! Murphy's law!

Great work, and you're looking great too 😉

Katie I think we'd all love to help as long as we can enjoy some time in the sauna too 😁

Bob Smithy

You are doing so well, I love the concept and that one person can easily? build it, you are going great.

David Mcquie

Thanks for the info. Condensation can sneak in amazing ways.

John Dammeyer

Yes, my garden room is build moreorless this way, although I'd actually say it's 'over insulated' - ie throughout the year I spend more energy cooling it down, than heating it up! For this build I'm using 70mm log timbers for the walls, so these should give pretty decent insulation Vs plywood cladding/siding as you describe, then with an insulated floor and ceiling it should hopefully be enough to keep it warm in winter and cool in summer. Being blunt, with 4-5 3d printers, laser cutters and more in there, I suspect there'll be a reasonable amount of ambient heating too! I'm musing whether to add additional waterproofing under the shingles though, although need to be careful not to create condensation issues too.

I don't think anyone else has asked but here in North America we mostly build with stud frames, plywood cladding and then add the house wrap membrane and some sort of siding. Inside decent insulation and some kind of wall board. Same with the roof. Plywood, then tar paper and then asphalt shingles. The thickness of the wood on the walls doesn't give super insulation so what will you do? And was this approach cheaper than traditional stud frame construction?

John Dammeyer

Getting there!!! Got to the last 5-6 planks on the roof by the time it was dark, so should be onto insulation tomorrow (weather permitting!)

Those drone shots are so cool! And I'm floored by how quickly this project is progressing🤯

ALH

You should call it Victor :D

Bazza McSpleen

I know!! I was rather pleased about that! Super stable, yet super light to move!! If I have the space, I'd keep a massive pile of it around permanently!! 🤣🤣🤣

Hands on Katie

That was clever! Move the not too heavy pile of foam around to use as scaffolding to stand on while installing roof boards.

John Dammeyer

Planning to put insulation panels and then sealing felt tiles on that to waterproof, so fingers crossed it'll be sealed thereafter!!

Hands on Katie

Nice one! Is there a waterproof membrane to go on the roof? The place will be pretty much weatherproof then?

Bazza McSpleen

Oh they all say that, they wonder what the heck is going on half the time!! 🤣🤣🤣 They've had 10+ years of my mad projects though, so they must be used to it by now!

Hands on Katie

Yep, it's 8m x 4.5m inside, so just think of all the fun projects I'll be able to showcase in there!!

Hands on Katie

Yes, it is about twice as big as I thought. The apparent size of the pad was really minimized by the low angle of the shots. The drone pics are great!

Jeremy

Missed the sauna photos on the first glance! Paradise by the Hue Go Light?

john gallagher

That’s so funny! I’ve always had this picture of your neighbors standing at their windows sipping tea and saying “What is she up to now?”

john gallagher

Fingers crossed finished all the roof planks today - fingers freezing though! That's the insulation and plywood for the floor and ceiling which will be the next step, but is currently a helpful scaffold!! And the ear protection is to stop me being able to hear all the neighbours complaining about the non stop impact driver at the moment!! 🤣🤣🤣🤭

Hands on Katie

Great progress in bad weather! Is that Jenga tower you’re standing on material for the floor or walls? Also, ear protection? Is the drill driver that loud or is that to dampen the screams of your adoring fans?

john gallagher

Thanks, always ignored that but interesting possibilities

Simon

....well if you're wanting to help with the build, then this afternoon works for me!! I figured if I'm building myself, I might as well go big so I don't end up needing to extend!!

Hands on Katie

That's a hue light - it's a Hue Go from memory. It's an odd device that most people don't realise it's actually got a battery in it, so you can use it portably!!

Hands on Katie

Well done What's the light you are holding outside the sauna?

Simon

Bloody Hell Katie! That workshop is bigger than my house! When can I move in? 🙂
