The Nano Wallet!

I seriously deserve some gin!! I really wanted to cover this as an example, as I'm always conscious I walk around my house and there's actually dozens of these tiny little devices that are just as handy as the 'headline' ones, but they never get the limelight!

Well that's four videos in a week! As it's such a simple little project, I knew I'd get shouted at if I shared this AFTER Black Friday as all this SwitchBot stuff is 40%+ off at the moment! (they seem to be one of those firms where you should just wait for their bonkers sales and stock up!) - I'm buying lots of their stuff as Christmas gifts for people this weekend!

On the wallet, this is one of those 'penny drops' for me where I realised I was carrying around all this stuff in my wallet that just was 'fossils' of the past - and with a tiny bit of tech, I could radically shrink things.

I'm now wondering if I can a) get things any smaller or b) add even more features for no extra space..... ;)

Enjoy - I'm off to chill out!

PS oh and watch out for the guest appearance from Monty the Morris Minor who's been in our family since the 1950s....

Blimey! Someone's been busy! :D

Bazza McSpleen

I've got an upcoming video on 3d modelling shortcuts, so this will touch on it! I might do this next week actually!

Great thinking. Do you have a good tutorial on how to make designs parametric?

Marc Radermacher

It's been pretty mild here today! 20cm of snow yesterday, but about 10C and very still today. Wind starting to pick up and light gone now, so that's me for the day!! (I'm grabbing every moment I can to get the roof finished between dropping kids off at parties and baking mince pies! (Feeling festive already!!)

Hands on Katie

What are you doing on your roof in this weather It's like 65 mile an hour winds, that is extreme DIY! I hope you are tethered on lol in all seriousness please be careful! We would like to see more videos from you x

Leona Devon

Ooh, let me see if I can have a look later for the one I got a whole back (I'm up on the roof of the new workshop at the moment building the roof!) - I did find one that does exactly this (they're a bit of a muddle of specs really, so it was a bit of a wild goose chase!). PS you know the Lock Pro works with keys too, so another option is to get a standard lock without a thumb turn and the lock pro will just turn the key for you.

Hands on Katie

Thank you, you're right I can do that but the cheap ones cannot operate with a key in on both sides, and the only cylinder I can find that has a removable thumb screw is the yale at £40, again there are specialist ones that allow you to turn the key from both sides independently, but again those are expensive, The research continues, I was hoping to hack the lock to fit my thumb turn, no luck yet

Leona Devon

Quick Google tutorial here: https://youtu.be/Nne0pZRULnk?si=kEMlhsrKltYFI98K

Hands on Katie

Ah, you know you can just replace the cylinder? (Usually £5-6 at Screwfix or the like) - basically just get one with a key or removable thumbturn and you'll be away! It usually comes out with a single screw inside your door, so super quick to do

Hands on Katie

I like the idea of this card, sadly I got the lock Oro but but it doesn't work with my lock as I can't remove the thumb turn as it's welded on, so have to buy a new lock, I was trying to look at an engineering way to get around this problem I haven't come up with one yet, and I don't want to pay £40 for a new lock.

Leona Devon

Ooof. Hmm. Any chance of trading for something else? I’ve already got four years supply of that and can’t be rid of it.

john gallagher

You get a year's supply of vivid orange fake tan!!

Hands on Katie

How do I redeem my points again?

john gallagher

Tom Jones Welsh reference AND puns.... Double points!!

Hands on Katie

Sorry you didn't get the roof on in time but the fire is so delightful and since we've no place to go....Let's print wallets!

john gallagher

I'll look to add a little selection of my favourites to my products page - there's all sorts of cool materials out there (eg copper effect is lovely) and there's also different types eg cold press/heat press, so it might help wading through all the options! And I'll laser etch your promise for your daughter's Christmas as evidence....!

Hands on Katie

I may just have to do that! (I'm also getting her a record player. I've told her that I'll always happily buy her music or crafting supplies.)

Greg Staten

Oh most definitely! They work beautifully together - the M1 can make 3d prints look so stylish super easily!! I'd recommend getting a stack of laser plywood, veneers and a big stack of vinyl rolls for her Christmas!!! You get all sorts of cool styles!

Hands on Katie

BTW, I showed this video to my daughter and now she's dreaming of ways we can mix 3D and the M1 Ultra!

Greg Staten

Definitely right, I was trying to keep it open as possible, but you could definitely save 1mm more if you wanted with that!! Likewise I think these devices are getting close to 2mm depth, so I'd be reasonably confident that at my Keynote speech for the NanoWallet 2025 edition, I'll be able to get to sub 3mm....! 🤣🤣🤣

Hands on Katie

So true, which is one reason I use an Apple Watch now!

Greg Staten

Oh yes, I did mention that briefly in this video, the Tesla obviously lets me use my phone as a key, but my phone is much bigger than everything else, so it's great to be able to go out without it occasionally!!

Hands on Katie

Love it! I've been using a slim wallet for years - though not as slim as you've gone! Agree it is just the right thing! And while moving to a car card instead of the car key is great, the car I bought a couple years ago let me go even slimmer: it uses my phone/watch as my key! 😀 And further, after enticing me to spend all sorts of money on xTool, now you've temped us once again with more SwitchBot! I'm going to need a really large bonus from work this year...

Greg Staten

Well I've made the design parametric, so I can just adjust to whatever width I want, so I aim for one bank card, driving licence for ID, the card for the card and the wallet finder card! (Some cards have those little raised letters which will increase the depth a tiny amount, so you can just adjust to suit!)

Hands on Katie

So, 2 credit cards, the wallet finder, and a card for the car entry? Is there room enough for driving licence as well? Does it have a spring loaded clampy thing to keep the cards in place, or do they just fit? The wallet finder seems like a pretty cool piece of tech

Bazza McSpleen

Great video. You always amaze me with your insight and ideas.
