More? Yes, more!! Let's talk lasers!!

Ok, as promised the second video that many of you have asked about over the last few months on which laser cutter, so thank you for your patience and hope this helps demystify a bit!

They are very different devices to 3d printers, so it's not as simple as better and better models, these all differ in the materials they can handle and the applications they're best suited to.

Nevertheless, I've tried to give you as much information as possible to help understand the differences!!!

Enjoy!

I don’t think it goes as far as polygamy but I think the M1 might be a little jealous that someone else is engraving your biscuits.

john gallagher

Well that's a good analogy, I should have used that!! (Although does that make me polygamous?!?!)

You make choosing the right laser sound almost akin to choosing the right life partner. Maybe you could create an app like a dating app designed to help match people with the right tech instead of the right partner. K80Konnect?

john gallagher

Awesome!! Well I certainly hope you used my affiliate link! 🀣 Yes, rotary is cool for anything circular (etching candles, water bottles, mugs and things like that. But certainly not a 'day one' thing. That sounds like an excellent starter set! You'll have a lot of fun with that!!!

So I've been rabbitholing on this during some rather boring Teams meetings. I'm thinking of getting the following: M1 Ultra 20W Advanced bundle (which has all four cutting heads) and the riser. I'm not sure how much I'd use the RA2 rotary jig, but I can always add that later! (Curious how much you use it, if you have it.) Purchased! You're very evil Katie! 🀣

Greg Staten

Oh I'd go for the M1 Ultra, it's much dinkier too, you'll love it and it's an arty girl's dream!! I suspect you'll be struggling to get a chance to use it.... πŸ˜‚ I would go for the 20W - basically more power, so it can cut through thicker stuff faster (which can be important to reduce charring and other things). Personally I'd go for a powered up M1 Ultra, rather than a base level P2 based on your description (eg get the riser so you can cut bigger stuff, other heads and fun accessories!) Do drop me a note if you want to doublecheck anything!!

Honestly, this is as much for me as it is for my 14 year-old art girl daughter. For that reason the flexibility of the M1 Ultra is extremely tempting! It seems the P2 is the only one that can do clear glass/acrylic, which is interesting to me, but the additional cost for that makes it less interesting. Considering the M1 Ultra is on sale through Friday for $999, I may just go ahead and order it. Going to do some serious thinking over the next couple of days! One question, what's the benefits you get if you get the 20W laser instead of the 10W laser? Speed? Extra capabiltiies?

Greg Staten

You're right and it really isn't an easy thing to compare - otherwise I'd just tell you!! Broadly P2: awesome cutting size, wood cutting, cuts clear acrylic F1 Ultra: detailed work, bonkers fast, batch processing and 3d carving of metal, stone and more M1 Ultra: Crafting anything - fabric, cutting vinyl, printing stickers and more But if you share your interests, then I can more precisely recommend, but they all have their place to a degree, so it ends up a case of priority rather than a flat decision - eg do you need a table saw or a chop saw? Probably both, but if you're framing with timber, then a chop saw might be the first, if you're making furniture, then a table saw might be more handy!

So now I have even more questions than before! Great introductory video, but now I'm ready to learn more! It looks like all three lines offer tons of capabilities, but now I'm wondering what I'm giving up when I choose one over another.

Greg Staten

Still trying to be a good boy! Maybe next year :D

A universal truth

Simon

...where 'more lasers' is both the solution and the problem... 😊

Hands on Katie

Where do you stop, before you know it you are talking about inertial confinement fusion

Simon

Well that's always an opportunity.... 🀭 I was thinking of pointing out all the different other types, eg UV lasers! But thought that might be taking it a bit far!

Hands on Katie

I can't think of anything I'd have added Other than try an slip in light amplification by the simulated emission of radiation And see if any one noticed

Simon

A pleasure, glad you enjoyed. I actually simplified that rather heavily to a) help articulate and b) not over-complicate, but hopefully it got the point across!

Thanks for that, very informative Interesting scale for the EM spectrum

If they sold them, I'd definitely buy them!!! I mean, security cameras can only deter so much, whereas Sharks with Frickin' Lasers?!!??

Hands on Katie

Are the lasers attached to sharks? (Austin Powers reference )
