The Big Build Begins!!!

Oooh I've been whacked every day this week, shifting 8 tonnes of materials, lifting, screwing, fixing.....and most importantly razor focused on the assembly, so I don't get something wrong!!! (This sort of build becomes very hard to fix mistakes!!)

Excuse the massive dump of more than usual photos - I'm exhausted by the end of each day, but I thought some of you might like to see the progress.

Weather and mistakes permitting, I should be getting onto the roof by tomorrow..... many fingers crossed!!!

It's starting to take shape!!

Oh it's a beast - it's a dead blow mallet I made out of walnut and oak. It has metal shot inside so there's no bounce back and he smashes like a beast!! I need to make a whole range at some stage - could have a +5, a +10 and a two handed +50 version!! Been using it non-stop!

That Mallet is hilarious. But does it really work? ;)

So you pre-drilled all of the overlapping corner pieces to drop a long bolt down through? Glad no feather joints but I can tell from your "Mallet of Encouragement" that you are no stranger to master-grade level joinery! I call my mallet "The Persuader", but not engraved on it...yet :)

I can't believe you said that!!!!! Do you not know about Scottish weather and it's dry sense of humour??? It's going to snow and hail tomorrow now!!

Hands on Katie

Well..... I'll hold a response until I finish - if it all falls down at the end, then it might not be so impressive!!!

Thank you!! This is great fun, loads of people pay £50 a month to get this sort of exercise by staring at a wall somewhere!!!

Hehehe! No rest when there's so much fun stuff to be doing!! It's all slow grown spruce, no feather joins or any sillyness! I'm going to treat it myself once assembled - paint sprayer primed!!! It does slot together without any major joins, but I'm going to fix long 2.4m bolts in the corners to really hold the whole thing together!!

Amazing progress, Katie! You really don't waste any time, do you. Are the assembly instructions in Sweedish? Is that all just knotty pine? How is it treated to prevent moisture intrusion and warping? Do all the pieces just fit together with no mechanical fasteners or adhesive? So many questions! Never enough photos!

Katie, you are awesome. Never afraid to attack a task or a project. Your excitement is infectious; thank you.

Wow, what a great way to build your workshop. I built a small holiday house 50 years ago and the system you are using would have saved so much time and effort.

This is coming together beautifully 😀And I'm glad the weather is cooperating for you! I can't wait to see the finished product 😊

Yes exactly right, definitely not going to chopsaw individually - all the logs are beautifully machined with multiple tongue and groove joints so they have excellent joint alignment and draught seals as a result. You're totally right on the weather-tighting, that's why I'm rushing to get it built before the weather turns. It doesn't matter if there's lots still to do inside once it's weatherproof, I just need to get the outside done in this brief window we've got here before the rain and cold comes for winter!!!

I am now getting a clearer picture of your new shop. Being exhausted at the end of a work day on that project has to feel very good. It appears that at least some of the project is pre-fab, making things easier. I could not imagine having to take every stick to the chop saw for the exact length. My first thought is "Lincoln Logs" from when I was young (a long time ago). I am anxious to see the project at later stages for the completed sidewalls and roof. Once those are done, it will be somewhat water proof. The real fun begins when you start on the inside with wiring, storage and tools.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm going to be shouting that tomorrow!!!

Hands on Katie

That's true. But also "HAMMMERRR!" :D

Bazza McSpleen

Hehehe! Everything is awesome!! 😎

Yes, I was mildly considering my choice of log thickness whilst having to lug them all to the spot, but I'm super glad now they're up, it's soooooo solid!!

Right in every way!!! It's really starting to come to life which is super exciting and you're right I went with loads of huge windows, but they're all along the front side, so still tonnes of wall space!! And yes, I'm totally exhausted, but in a nice way!! Tomorrow it continues!!!

That poor statue!!!! 🗿

You should definitely dual wield the Mallet of Encouragement with the Hammer of Percussive Maintenance! Also, if you need encouragement, you should totally get in touch with this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vR-BXASOu0 :D Are the beams pre-cut and hammer into place? It looks like it's going up nice and quick!

Bazza McSpleen

Amazing job so far and I can already sense you wanting to live in the shop. Those tall windows are to die for! (I'm in a garage shop so I have to open the main door for air and natural light). Glad you got all these pics to share. You look so happy even if exhausted. Enjoy the build!

Stephen Kirk

Never apologise for more photos I love your mallet

Simon

What a massive undertaking! No wonder you're knackered. I don't have the organizational fortitude for such a project. It's like a modern-day version of a log cabin. How did you ever find such a thing? Where we live everyone just plops down prefab workshop sheds.

A LEGO building. Now you just need a colourful hat. Bright green or violet.
