Let's do Herb Planters!!!!!

Had a bit of a random side-quest this year after realising all my outdoor herbs had died! My herb beds looked like there'd been a nuclear winter, so I figured I'll solve that with a Fallout-proof Herb Vault!!!

Enjoy!!

Let's do Herb Planters!!!!!

Any update on the Herbus lately?

Benjamin Liles

Katie, For your LED grow light strips, did you use a 4 Red, 1 Blue LED sequence strip, or individual white LEDs or individual LEDs with the RED/BLUE spectrum?

John Dammeyer

Of course, I've posted them in the discord already, just need a couple of days to finish the webpage on my site to give more details. In the medium term, I want to make this fully parametric so you can make yours customised to you too!

Hands on Katie

Great video!! Any plans to post the STL files? I would love to make one!

curtis milo

Amazing!

Joel Rogers

Oh, you won't be missing out on explosions! Fire arrows are available and flammable stuff is everywhere! Also, Barrelmancy and sneaky skills mean you can stack the boom! If you're feeling particularly naughty, there's a mod for 0 mass consumables, which apparently counts Smokepowder barrels as consumables!

Bazza McSpleen

Hmm, I've never done a stealth run.... Feels like I'm missing all the fun and explosions!!! Might need to try it sometime!!!

Hands on Katie

I've done run throughs to Act 3 with both a Sorlock (Sorceror/Warlock/Fighter hybrid for extra extra Eldritch Blast funs!), and a GloomAssasin (Ranger(Gloomstalker)/Rogue(Assassin) for sneaky shooty fun). I've managed 3 or 4 "rounds" of stealth attacks without being detected with the second one, if you stay in the shadows, and shoot while in stealth mode, you don't get detected if you pass a stealth check - Ranger gets the Pass without Trace spell, which gives a flat +10 to stealth checks (and it lasts all the way to a long rest!), and once you've dipped into Rogue, you've probably got in the region of +5 to +11 in stealth with the proficiency anyway, so with the +10 on top... It's frankly amoral! :D Plus, you can always send Karlach in for some extra carnage for funsies... I made her a Berserker, so she can throw enemies around :)

Bazza McSpleen

Hey Stephen, I'm aiming for this coming weekend, just need a quiet moment to tidy it up a bit and jot down a few notes for people!! (You can see from my latest post what's absorbing all my time this week!)

Hands on Katie

I have a couple of spools of white filament on the way. I'd love to add this to the different planting setups my wife and I have. The design looks great. I'd be happy to print and do some beta testing. When you expect to have the files available?

Stephen Kirk

Oh I've almost completed a good run a few times, but I always end up being mischievous!! And Gale is sooooo annoying! 😂😂😂 Yes I 'think' you're right on coating. You might get a bit of melting of the acrylic and might need to play with coatings, but I believe it can be done - worth a try! Agree, I saved up a fair old time for my P2 before I bought it, but boy are they awesome, just munches through everything!!!

Hands on Katie

On BG3, I've nearly completed a good boy run, and need to do a naughty boy run. There are new mods that allow other playable races, so I'm thinking about corrupting an Aasimar for a Durge run... I also just had a thought that might allow me to be more wallet friendly - if I got clear or frosted acrylic, painted it black or grey, then used a diode laser, it *should* cut through the paint then go straight through the acrylic without touching it, which would look pretty cool for aircraft/space sim control panels, and would save in the region of £2500. CO2 lasers are crazy expensive!!

Bazza McSpleen

Great thoughts!! As it's integrated to Home Assistant already, the elecrow growcube would certainly be able to trigger for anything. It also has the temp and humidity sensors built in, so that's covered. We'd just need to investigate smart nutrient sensors!

Hands on Katie

With the smart pump, if the database is open source, you could add pH and soil nutrient info into it (if it isn't already there), then use an arduino/ESP32, a pump, and a couple of tanks, one of something high pH (baking soda?), and one of low pH (Nitric acid might be a good choice, as it'll add Nitrogen into the soil as well), and you could use those to modify the soil pH in the planter. Ooh, I just thought of something else! If you added a temp/humidity sensor into the chamber, you could also include ideal temperature and humidity information for the plants, and add heater, fans for cooling, and humidifier/dehumidifier into the mix... This is why I struggle to complete projects! Overcomplicate everything, hit a snag, then give up or get distracted by another shiny thing! :D

Bazza McSpleen

I think Archimedes just facepalmed because I'd forgotten about this effect! You're absolutely right, and the trick with this method would then be to somehow control the flow rate into each planter so that the soil in the planter doesn't get too moist? Maybe pinching the end of the siphon tube so it drips rather than flows, after the initial soil has been watered, it would then maintain the water level, give or take?

Bazza McSpleen

On the gravity fed approach - I was thinking it could be even simpler than this. To demonstrate, just grab a plastic bottle, then fill with water and then turn upside down into an empty bowl - you'll see how it will fill the bowl only to the level of the water and then stop. Naturally as the plant takes in more water, it'd fill up again. What I was wanting to then test was whether siphon tubes between various planters would then allow water to be spread to lots of different planters. Ultimately as long as the bottle water level was higher, then this should work..... I 'think' this will work..... (famous last words!)

Hands on Katie

Height-wise - it's fully modular, so you can just keep adding more vertical pieces until you reach space! Smart pump - it has an attached moisture sensors and temperature sensors in the unit itself, so it basically checks it's database for the type of plant, monitors moisture and pumps more water as required. You can get pH monitors - I'm not sure if I've seen digital ones though, I'll need to check - and more on the general soil nutrients, I'm not sure I've seen this either, although this would be pretty cool!

Hands on Katie

Bazza... Bazza...Bazza.... if you think I'm going to discourage you from buying a CO2 laser, then you've got the wrong person.... they're awesome!!! I'm going to do a video on the different types in the near future though, so people can see the subtle differences! Ooh, I need to get back to BG3, haven't played for aaaaages and know there's been loads of updates and new mods!!

Hands on Katie

You're putting bad thoughts in my brain again! Must... buy... CO2... laser engraver/cutter! This is the sort of project I've been too lazy to get off my arse and think about myself (plus BG3 is filling up most of my free time, and I still need to sort out my servers, and model a piece for a shower runner so I can 3d print some to fix my mum's shower)... In terms of the height, are the print files modular enough that you can stack the walls of the grow area higher? I'm thinking for things like basil and chillies they grow up quite a bit? Or would that be a "move to the overflow" scenario? With the smart pump, it appears that it does the watering part, but little else? So I was wondering, if one can get monitors for things like soil pH, you could add something to modify the soil in a given pot to best suit the plant growing in it. You could possibly extend that to adding plant food in as well, either adding it to the water source, or directly, so that it would be absorbed with the watering cycle? Not sure how one would monitor the plant to know if it was going all "Little shop of horrors" on you though... If you were thinking of a simple gravity fed water feed system, you could use a 2l bottle with a TPU bung that holds a flow regulator (could be as simple as just a piece of plastic with pin-holes that will allow water to drip), then runs to a pipe system that goes to the pots? You'd probably need a stop valve in there above the flow regulator, in case you want to completely stop the flow. Or possibly, instead of a bung on the end of the bottle, you could 3d print a nozzle that would screw into the bottle cap screw, and contain the necessary regulator and stop valve? Thoughts?

His reply: I have an Ortur Laser Master Pro 2 with a 40W head from Laser Tree

John Dammeyer

He had mentioned diode laser. I've asked him for the brand and model #.

John Dammeyer

Yes of course, do you know what type of laser he has? I cut on a CO2 laser, so you can just cut it straight. On other types like diode you might be able to cut by spraying or backing it with something to absorb the laser

Hands on Katie

My friend with the laser cutter asked how you engraved the clear plastic. Did you do a video on that?

John Dammeyer

Wonderful project idea!! Cool, I'll give it a week or so to let ideas come in (loads of good ones already) and then I can update the files and share!!

Hands on Katie

Hey John, well then you're all equipped!!! I'll need to a video about 'the modern workshop' at some point as there really is a shift happening with the most valuable tools - unsurprisingly I'd put a 3D printer and a laser cutter right up there!!

Hands on Katie

I already have white PLA loaded in the printer from a different project. With only one working printer it likely will take a while to print everything so I'd love to get started now. I have a friend with a laser cutter so that won't hold me back.

John Dammeyer

Well this is very interesting! This might be a great project to do with my 14 year old daughter who is getting into cooking! Right offhand I can't think of any tweaks for it, but I'll give it consideration. looking forward to seeing the files when they're ready!

Greg Staten

Yea thats a bummer. You can comment on that video or reach out to him for proper credits.

Alex Noel

Ah love it!! I've added a link in the description as he didn't seem to cross-link to the original! Great spot!

Hands on Katie

You're right!! I was really annoyed at this, it seems to be my settings as I was testing using OBS so I could hit record and not have to flip cards back and forth. It worked great but seemed to start frame dropping a bit later - which is ridiculous as it's a PC with a 4090, 192GB of RAM and dedicated cache M2 drives!! 🤓 I think I've cracked it now though, it appears you need to manually set a whole bunch of codec commands to get it smooth, so fingers crossed. It'll be a huge time saving for me as it means I can just hit record and it'll capture, convert and more (I'll give you all a sneaky peek when I do my new Home Office video!!)

Hands on Katie

btw off topic, look who is making a guest appearance here: https://youtu.be/vAIyXnI5xpM?si=FuxRSy51qBrDfmR5&t=538

Alex Noel

it looks like your narration seequence has some frame drops up to 1:55 (You wearing the white shirt). 🤔 Rest of the video is fine. Amazing video though.
