Playroom: Smart Seating update!!

This little nook seat was dreamt up by my daughter, so build it I shall!!!

It's got a curving top that will hold LED lighting, smart buttons to control the room, secret drawers to store things, a curving seat that allows people to lie down and sit upright.

The challenge is actually building it faster than she can dream up new features to add.

The hard bit is now done, just need to upholster a curved custom cushion, add the top, wire all the electronics, fit the drawers and 3d print a whole bunch of storage solutions and gadget holders for the wall!!

Been brainstorming designs for something very cool for the walls also with some folks in the discord channel.... this could be really awesome....!

What a fun project! Can't wait to see all the secrets! How do you manage all of these projects!?

Darin

Great piece of carpentry, and great legs !!

Mwaaahahaha!!! Evil actually. Or I suffer from a terrible thing described in "Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy". Searching for the answer to life, the universe and everything. Discovering it's 42. Seems I always have 42 projects on my list. When I finish one project, cross it off the list and add up what's left there are still 42. Yet there were 42 on the list before I crossed it off. Very strange.

With us lot as Patreons, this will probably end up more like Archer than Bond! :D

You're a bad man!!! You're just tempting me now!! I actually had the thought to make a 'modular' steam box as a project once my new workshop is built - you could have movable pieces that you can adjust around to adapt for all the different curves and shapes you might want.... now you're just making me think I need ANOTHER project to my list.... ;)

Building a steam box isn't as difficult as it might appear. I made two long boxes. One about 9x9 inches ID and about 5' long. The other 9x9 inches OD so it slid into the first. Attach a pipe with a hose to an old electric tea kettle for steam. Vent holes at the other end. Silce wood into 1/8th or 3/16 thick and place in steamer. Make sure the form has lots of clamping places. When it come out move quickly and clamp them all at one end. Then continue to bend and clamp. Much thicker pieces can be steam bent. I think there is a number of minutes per inch of thickness. Very rewarding. I'll see if i can find some pictures.

I'm hoping to get some more done in the next couple of weeks (if I can avoid even more new features being added by the kids!!)

I can't say I never make a mess, but that's part of the fun surely! 🙂

Oh I'd love to have a go at steam bending!!! It's mainly a time thing (plus I care less about the kids destroying plywood than my hand steamed curved designs!!) As they wanted a dark colour on this, there was no need to have it out of nice wood!

Hands on Katie

Did a zoom in on a couple of photos. Now I see how they came out of sheet plywood. Figures. I go complicated for projects like these and steam bend over forms and then glue the bent laminations they have dried. Your way looks great!

John Dammeyer

You seem to be an expert at handling caulk. I've a lot to learn from you, sensei. 🙂

Dermot Canniffe

Very cool! Looking forward to the finished product.

Ron

Your villainous plot will definitely involve lasers but what would your villain name be? RM was the Bond I grew up with. A View to a Kill the best.

We've been watching in order, so just up to Roger Moore!! I've found it fascinating actually, you realise how much the world has changed by watching them! Oooh, yes I'll need to think what my villainous plot would be!!!

Hands on Katie

Connery or Craig? You would’ve been the best Bond villain!

john gallagher

Hey John, this was hardwood plywood with rebated edges to both slot onto the side of the chair and also to allow an LED strip run underneath it!

Hands on Katie

I've been watching James Bond with the kids, can you tell???

Hands on Katie

I didn’t think it was possible for someone to hold a caulk gun seductively but I have been proven wrong. Beautiful work as always!

john gallagher

How did you make the side rails? Laminated over forms? What type of wood?
