This is a fascinating little device!!

Nah it's annoyingly not, will need to add it to my project list at some point and redesign - some of the design is fundamentally silly, eg the TRVs judging temperature of the room. Obviously being right next to the radiator distorts the temperature...! So I'd go with a cheap sensor to place in the room, that then controls the heating... I'll be covering how to do this yourself in the next couple of videos (got one to walk through how to program esp chips for temp, sound and loads more)

but if you jump ship don't leave me behind it is scary out there and i need a good open thermostat !

If the tados open source if so you should resell your improved version!!!πŸ’·πŸ’·πŸ’·πŸ’·

Hey Mitch - I use Tados currently, but not wildly enamoured.... buggy and cloud dependent. Mulling jumping ship or hacking the life out of them to make them locally controlled.....!

Katie what do you use for a home thermostat? Thanks Mitch

Mitchell Green

For my puppies I would also like to trigger drop down oxygen masks! So putting nest aside I would need a reliable open source smart thermostat that works out of the box as by the time I figure out how to make one it will be very chilly or roasting hot in my place for a long period of time. Know of any? I am going to build a mockup house to test things as I will be moving soon and want to have some smart home functionality ready to go

And agree, Nest went downhill fast once they got 'corporated' - I had a longer rant about this that I cut out of the video that covered this point, might share a 'rant' outtake with you all at some point!! Katie... the uncut version..... 🀣🀣🀣

Well it has a methane sensor too, so I think your dog would be covered also.... 🀣 Yes, I don't see why you couldn't do this with this sensor and HA - provided your devices were connected/smart -enabled, it'd be very simple in fact!!

I see the device is available with a gas sensor. I presume that would be the gas from your stove and not your dog. Do you think it would be possible to get the sensor separately and place them near a furnace and water heater as well? I would also love an open source carbon monoxide sensor that would trigger an alert and immediately turn off any source of CO like the furnace and water heater as well as any fans. Is this possible with Apollo products and home assistant? I currently have this with a Nest thermostat and their Nest protect integrated smoke and CO detectors but it is a closed system and expensive.

Ah great point - these are really high quality, I was super impressed at the components they'd picked (and you know by now, I'm picky!!) The other big advantage is because it's totally open source, it's repairable, upgradeable and more...!

I have had a Netatmo weather station in various rooms for years, and they have worked well for a long time. but slowly sensors start to fail and no longer want to connect. Apollo is a very nice replacement for this.
