It's about someone dealing with a heroin addiction and their partner trying to save them, but in the end they don't. At that time heroin came in black balloons. Even though this is speculation Its believed to be about the bass player, Robby, ex-wife who died from a heroin overdoes. They look like they're in pain while performing it. The song hits so much harder and in a different way knowing this. Its worth watching the music video with this knowledge.
