Building a Planar Race

I would really like to build new races, one devoted to each of the planes. I’m not talking about “monsters” or “player races” necessarily (though there might of course be overlap). No, I’m primarily talking about sentient creatures with culture and history and motivation. Previous incarnations of the game have had their githzerai and githyanki, modrons, and slaad. You see where I’m going here. An iconic creature race, epitomizing each of the planes. They are important to that plane, but that doesn’t mean they’re monolithic or the most important thing about that plane. It just means that they have a place there. Just like the ratatosk are a part of Yggdrasil.

So what’s your pleasure? Perhaps that’s a race of ostensibly cleaning-and-maintenance automatons in Klingadesh, returning to the Depths of the Marketplace when not on duty, to their secret, social lives beneath the ever-bustle of commerce. Perhaps it’s a creation of one of the scattered empires of Ginnungagap, discarded but clinging together to survive—out of shear spite. Perhaps it’s an undead symbiote in the Evermaw, intelligent but weak outside of their partnerships, that are potent shadow players on the Plane of the Undead. A race of celestial psychopomps in the Infinite Halls? A seneschal race of fey responsible for making sure Silendora keeps ticking along—and not being seen doing it? These are just some of the possibilities. 

So let’s build something together. Ultimately, the new creature will be extensible, either by different monster builds or by class, to be more than just a single monster entry. These new races are certainly will not replace anybody, for there’s more than enough room for all the races you already know in all the planes. However, they’ll have a past and a future, a purpose. They’ll have a unique and prominent place on their plane. And they’ll be creations brainstormed by the Warlock patrons and designers.

First things first, let’s figure out which plane to start our discussion on. We’ll figure out the details as we go forward, and we’ll build a new race together.
