Tell me a song…

That speaks to you lyrically!

I say it a ton in my reactions how lyrics to me are everything, they can create a vibe, express a feeling you have that you can’t articulate yourself, move and inspire you!

If you have a song that you’d like me to pay attention specifically to the lyrics, drop it in the comments!

Papa Roach : Leave A Light On https://youtu.be/jB7i_2aaXHQ?si=1EfauzI4t_0W2yR4 This song is about helping each other through depression and I love listening to it since I also fight depression.

Neon Moonlight

I have to add to this…this put me on a emo music rabbit hole lol. I did a radio mix on Spotify and The Great Escape by BOYS LIKE GIRLS came on - talk about instant flood of memories. This song always reminds me of my aunt who passed away from breast cancer. She was my favorite aunt, I always looked forward to talking to her about life. My dad says I remind him of her; she was his little sister. Whenever this song plays, I always think of her singing it at the last birthday party I saw her at before she passed away.

A band that has helped me in so many ways. Not rock, not Kpop. Straight from La, I give you, The Midnight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mk_EvwP0MgE

Upiko : Crow Link: This song has spoken to me since I first heard it reminding me of my past, but not how I am now. Upiko is a singer/songwriter who went to Tokyo with nothing but a guitar on her back and has been playing clubs but this is her first official video and single. She writes music about things that are meaningful for her. the lyrics to this song explain better then I can what she wrote it about. I think remembering the times you struggled helps you appreciate what you have now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-40A3xSEx0 (subtitled official video)

There are many by a band called Marianas Trench that I love. They make the most beautiful album opener songs and this one has forever been my favorite (from their 3rd album). I have the lyrics tattooed on my collar bone. This is Ever After: https://youtu.be/zrT4lbbybPc?si=vHjVA3-lZ0lfs The lead singer who writes all their music is fantastic at what he does and they are working on a new album now (number 6) and they just put out the opener as their first track which they have never done. Each album has a theme/story line and they are just masterpieces. In an interview talking about his music he says "I don't like to talk to much about what the music means to me specifically because I think the important thing is what it means to someone else when they listen to it" That short 50sec clip is here if interested: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C6FktEWr3_1/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== 3fi

“Who I am hates who I’ve been” by Relient K. Had this song on repeat at one point. In my 20’s, there was a period where I wasn’t being true to myself. Eventually I knocked that shit off and found my way back to who I really am but realizing it sucked for a while. https://youtu.be/c0DQ9Kh2ckk?si=lNswHt7itfNgZjwZ

Tota - Tsumugu Here are the english translation of the lyrics: A drop fell from the watery place The world looked distorted and wavy Even important things are shrouded in cloudy sky And shadows hide, looking downwards Even though it will be plucked someday The flower blooms beautifully So it won’t wither If this song is played So the sky may cry and you can smile So the wind may sing and you can hear Like the clouds swaying in my heart Faintly, fragile, but still strong Now, just sing So it can reach you The rainbow will come and connect us Before saying goodbye, I’ll look back and say “I live happily in the sky” Tears fall when I look up This is where I want to live Because I haven’t given up on happiness with you So the sky may cry and you can smile So the wind may sing and you can hear Like the clouds swaying in my heart Fleeting, fragile So the sky may cry and you can smile So the wind may sing and you can hear Like the clouds swaying in my heart In the starry sky, where even the air is clear Now, I just wish That tomorrow will come Until the day we can hold hands again The rainbow will come and connect us. Yes sad lyrics, but these really bring back memories of those I have lost in the past. Also give glimmers of hope and reconciliation in the future. I cried the first time I heard and read these lyrics! All from a 15? year old japanese singer! Here is the link https://youtu.be/NDwqZIXOvKw?si=j2-WhdIijBLjYIyA

At a very low point in my life a song came on while I was driving home and I had to pull over as the tears flowed, it triggered so much in me and was helped me heal through tears that washed depression away & spoke to me about choices made that I knew weren’t right for me and made me see through the mask of what I projected to who I really was so long ago - Something More by Second Hand Serenade. Also I song that moves me every time I hear it and is just as true now as the day it was written - He’s Not Heavy He’s My Brother by The Hollies.

NCT Dream "Unknown" off their new album Dream Scape. It's so beautiful and heartfelt. It makes me believe in them as artists and human beings. It makes me feel safe and comforted. Not to mention their voices are perfect and just hit my soul. Their whole new album is incredible, I highly recommend it for a full album listening experience. https://youtu.be/eDngBB8cRNc?si=qpUk9qIhi1I4UI-U Bonus live of unknown: https://youtu.be/ZBVULQAm7X4?si=wHBme0Trsqed8Ely

It's an old song, and one I can't really listen to now since I used it for my Daddy's funeral few years ago, but "Way Over Yonder" by Carole King always speaks to me ...

“Growing Sideways” - Noah Kahan

Linds K

“scared of my guitar” by Olivia Rodrigo. so many layers to this story telling. it’s one thing to play guitar and sing about a failing relationship. peel another layer and it’s about not wanting to play guitar because don’t want to face reality. peel another layer and it’s about her coming to terms, “settling” in the relationship. there’s one part in the song that the vocals sounds like a Jeff Buckley style vocal. great stuff

Art

“call your mom” by Noah Kahan. he has amazing story telling. it’s dark, in this case not a story but about him convincing his friend to not commit the act of “unalive”. he failed

Art

Tolerate It, and also Happiness. Both by Taylor Swift.

Lately I've been listening to Alexandra Kay. Love all of her songs. But the two that hit me emotionally are Everleave and That's what love is. Everleave especially because I've been in a couple of long term relationships where they were toxic but it took a lot for me to finally walk away. And not look back. That's what love is touched my heart. I'm a single mom of a 12 year old who was born prematurely and autistic. I'm raising her completely on my own. We've struggled but our bond is very tight.

Bernadette Roberts

How could I not have listed these first: “Wounded Heart” and “The Ones We Couldn’t Be” by Bonnie Raitt. Some songs make you feel exposed to the world, as if the feelings and memories they evoke in you are so strong that other people around you can feel and seem them. Songwriting is truly a gift.

Mel Beckerson

Broken Heart of Gold by One OK Rock. Many will think it is too dark. But for someone who has been in that emotional space, it is such a relief to hear someone express your feelings perfectly in a song. It feels as though it was written for you.

Pretty much anything by The Amazing Devil. Truly their lyrics are my fav of all time and always hit hard. They're such good storytellers it's unreal. Personal favourite though? Probably "Farewell Wanderlust" or "Blossoms".... I legit can't choose between them, I've listened to them hundreds of times and still get chills lol.

Lotta

"Borrowed Time" by Jonah Nilsson and "Conversations with My 13-Year Old Self" by Pink

"Love Poem" by IU has absolutely incredible lyrics for anyone going through a hard time. I sent you a dm awhile back about this song but I'm not sure if you still reply to those or not.

”Kaerou" by Fujii Kaze

Who Wants To Live Forever by QUEEN. I was introduced to Queen and that song in Highlander. To this day it's still one of the most heartbreaking songs ever. To find your soul mate but then you have no time together because you are immortal and she is not. So you only get one lifetime with her and will have to go on forever without that love. 😭😭😭

Seelia

Numb little bug by Em Beihold Every lyric in this song speaks to me especially ( I just wanna see if you feel the same as me Do you ever get a little bit tired of life Like you're not really happy but you don't wanna die) spoke volumes when I first heard it

Rosey Perkins

Gravity by Sara Bareilles - such a good song with incredible lyrics that Sir Elton John himself requested to do this song as a duet with her.

Angie H

I love Soul Meets Body. ♥️

Seelia

Hunting High and Low by A-Ha It's in my top 3 most heartbreaking songs ever. For me, he sings about a love that he'll always be searching for.

Seelia

Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve by Taylor Swift from the Midnights album. She wrote it about her relationship with with John Mayer when she was 19 and he was 31. But I hear it and it makes me think about the abusive first marriage I was in at 19.

“Comfortable” and “Stay for a while” by Victor Ray

Sacid Ve

Most recently, it’s been two of V’s - Blue and Grey and Inner Child. He unfortunately understands depression and therapy and has managed to create music out of it. Back when I was (much) younger, Somebody by Depeche Mode. Oh and from theatre, Superboy and the Invisible Girl from Next to Normal (great show). Oof.

A bunch of Death Cab for Cutie but especially I Will Follow You Into the Dark. A bunch of Babymetal songs but not because the lyrics have that much meaning to me but because they sound beautiful.

Not sure if this pertains to songs you’ve reacted to or just songs in general, but Little Miss Why So by The Amazing Devil. Anything by this band is great for lyrics honestly, they’re so evocative and have this fantastic way of mythologizing the modern and mundane. This is both my favorite song of theirs and just of all time, such a poignant, honest, raw description of depression and a love that just isn’t quite enough. Edit: no lyric videos or closed captions on audio exist, so I made my own lyric video for this one sdfsfds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAIQfZ-ke3o

Outside of the taylor songs you’ve heard. It’s time to go (from evermore deluxe album) Although like 95% of her songs are lyricly hitting Also other songs outside of tay: noah kahan - growing sideways Selena gomez -my mind and me Jessie murph - if i dies last night NF - lost in the moment Crossfade - cold Just to name a few from different genres but this is impossible to me. My playlist has like 6k of songs and 90% is because of lyrics 😂

SABATON - Christmas Truce

Frou frou - a new kind of love. I have my interpretation of the song, and it's kind of tragic, but a beautiful sounding song nonetheless.

How Did You Love- Shinedown

Outside of several Swift songs which you’ve heard in some way already. The next that comes to mind is Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt” - the music video is a must watch. Just kills me everytime.

What Sarah Said by Death Cab for Cutie. This song always makes me tear up because it reminds me of those feelings in the hospital before my dad passed away. Ben Gibbard didn’t personally experience this at the time he wrote the song, but I’m so grateful that he perfectly encapsulated all the feelings and setting that comes with having to say goodbye.

Amber

I second this!

Signe A.

I'm hoping he'd check out sad girl autumn version, specifically...eras was a lot to take in at once so a revisit may not be out of the question and I'm just silly but love that one best

How Could I Ask For More — Cindy Morgan

This was the first song that came to mind for me too. So many hard hitting lines in there. I know he heard it on the Eras tour already though.

Whisper_dvm

phoebe bridgers has several songs that do this for me such as "waiting room" and "graceland too". also noah kahan is an amazing artist and his writing really speaks to me, i would really recommend checking out his album "Stick Season (Forever)"

lillian!!

There's a combo of Taylor Swift songs from 1989 that really speak to me, especially because besides the 'outro' song, they bookend the 1989 tour (which is on the EAS channel, filmed in Sidney - https://youtu.be/P5JLMp08GC0?si=-GIseFSDYZuoAoeB). The songs are Welcome to New York (the very start of the concert) and Out of the Woods, at timestamp 1:49. The lyric parallels are: (Welcome to New York:) Kaleidoscope of loud heartbeats under coats (Out of the Woods:) You took a polaroid of us, then discovered / the rest of the world was black and white, but we were in screaming color The thing I love about this is the feeling of secret knowing. In WTNY, it's the knowing that everyone in this vibrant city around you is as alive and creative as you are, even in the cold of winter when you can't see their work or their excitement. In OOTW, it's the hidden knowledge of this powerful love, one that is so alive and bright that the rest of the world seems colorless in comparison. edit: also, THANK YOU for this, because these two are like a live wire inside my head and I keep wanting to share them with people, and I feel like you can't just walk up to someone and talk about it, you know? Love your reactions, tons of love!

Darsy Smith

Who You Are Song by Jessie J This song hit me pretty hard. I had just lost my mum and my illness became much worse. I had to quit working. Which was my identity or so I thought. Thankfully have an amazing hubby who always told me I am wonderful. But this song came out and it really spoke to my own struggles. An older song that also has meaning to me Be Good to Yourself Song by Journey

Maykacha

Omg this is an impossible challenge sir. I'll just stick with one song for now- Good Grief by Bastille. It's personal for me and got me through the most significant loss in my life.

NotCaseyKasem

All Too Well 10 minute version, BUT specifically the Sad Girl Autumn Version, recorded at long pond studios. There are many versions of this song that exist now, each with their own emotional interpretation based on her delivery, but this stripped back version is my favorite. Would be interesting to compare the SNL 10 min version to sad girl autumn version, and see how the change ups make you feel 😊
