BabyMetal Pa Pa Ya LIVE at Glastonbury

I loved hearing how raw the vocals were here! Great Live Performance!

BabyMetal Pa Pa Ya LIVE at Glastonbury

Comments

I can look back on the Glastonbury performance now and see that it pales in comparison with other shows. I have several of their shows on Bluray now, and they are of course much better. The Tokyo Dome shows are unreal. Nevertheless, watching the Glastonbury performance was what turned me onto the band originally. I thought I'd check out the stream since I was curious, and ended up watching the whole thing in astonishment. Needless to say, I'm way deep in the Foxhole now.

I saw Babymetal in Brisbane, Australia on 8 June and Pa Pa Ya was on the set list (it was for most shows [maybe even all] on the Asia/Australia leg of Babymetal's world tour). When you see them in Nashville, make sure you pick up a Babymetal towel from the merch store so you can swing it over your head in the crowd. Yes, it's a thing that the crowd does all over the world when this song is played. You don't want to miss out on that bit of crowd interaction. The towel cost me AUD$40 (about US$25ish) but I bought it in just in case they played Pa Pa Ya. I'm so glad I did. There is a palpable sense of community when you are taking part in audience participation with Babymetal, you don't feel weird doing it because everyone is doing it. It's almost ritualistic; I'm serious. However, the highlight of their concert for me was when they played Shanti, Shanti, Shanti. This was previously far from my favorite song of theirs but seeing them perform this live blasted Shanti into the stratosphere for me. Su, Moa and Momo's vocals were impeccable, and the dancing was so technical and wonderfully done. I won't spoil the song by rattling on about it, but you need to check it out before September, as it was on most of the set lists for the Asian/Australian leg of the tour, so will likely be in the US set list as well.

I'm going to the Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta shows, but I sadly can't go to Nashville since it's on the Tuesday after the holiday and I'll have to be back at work lol. If you don't have plans for the weekend prior, you should drive over to Atlanta for DragonCon and the Babymetal show there! Fair warning, even the 'live' professional recordings are touched up a bit (but I'm sure you know this), and while Su is an amazing vocalist, she isn't studio perfect at their lives. Still top tier, and I've loved every show I've been to so far!! Regarding the Kami band - there is a rotating roster, but moreover there are two distinctly different bands. There is the Kami band of the East, who are the original Japanese musicians, currently consisting primarily of Takayoshi Ohmura and ISAO on guitar (in this video, it was Leda Cygnus instead of ISAO, he's the one with the Strandberg), BOH on bass, and Hideki Aoyama on drums, and then there is the Kami band of the West. The Kamis of the West are American musicians, and were introduced during the Metal Galaxy era to play BABYMETAL shows in Europe and Japan. This group consists of CJ Masciantonio and Chris Kelly on guitar, Clint Tustin on Bass, and Anthony Barone on drums. This is the group you will see in Nashville (99.5% sure). Before the Metal Galaxy era, the Eastern Kamis wore the corpse paint, but all Kamis begain wearing masks around the time the Western Kamis were introduced. Many fans speculate this was to obfuscate who the backing band members were to avoid any awkwardness with Japanese fans, but this is unconfirmed. edit: I wish I had read Grington's reply before typing this up rofl

How did I forget Budokan 2021?!

They did do a pretty kawaii Interview after Glastonbury and were excited to see Billie Eilish. They did get to meet her and take a pic but Billie is looking like WTF are these women in warrior costumes.

Otherwise my favorite overall concert is LMG, followed by Tokyo Dome, followed by Budokan 2021. I also enjoyed the MetRock and Rising Sun Rock festival performances.

If you want a better version of Pa Pa Ya I would suggest the Babymetal Returns The Other One version. Triumphant Return to performing, great crowd, Su full of attitude and ringing her Rs like crazy.

There are so many great ones. I guess it depends whether you want something early (Legend 1997 from Dec 2013 was great and had the narrative of them transitioning from Idols to a Metal band), Budokan Red and Black Nights in 2014 when they released the first album and the Kami band finally became the full time support for live shows (they had only done the encores up to then), Saitama Super Arena January 2015 was one of their best, MetRock 2015 to see them outdoors at a festival with the wildest crowd you will ever see is something everybody should see, it is only about 40 minutes long, Wembley Arena 2016, their first arena show outside of Japan, Tokyo Dome Red Night and Black Night 2016, their biggest shows to date with 55k people each night and a completely different set list - every song from the first two albums. More recently Legend S December 2017, the first show without Yui but Su's 20th birthday is an incredible show. Legend M in 2019 was Moa's 20th and was also amazing. Legend Metal Galaxy - another 2 night concert with both Kami Bands and all the songs from Metal Galaxy plus a few older favourites. I couldn't choose ... maybe Jake or someone will have a definite one to pick.

Ohhhh that’s awesome to know! I was thinking it would be better to watch this one than one that might be on a full concert we could watch on here together! Any suggestions for some full live shows to watch?

Great reaction, but for future reference please avoid the Glastonbury videos - the BBC made such a bad job of the audio (microphones too low or not working, they never did plug in the second one for the bass drums) and Glastonbury is a huge pop festival, so the crowd is not a metal crowd (never mind a Babymetal crowd) and they had no clue what they were listening to. The tickets sell out long before the line up is announced and they will be there for bands like Cold Play - Kylie Minogue was headlining this stage that night. The Kami Band wore corpse face paint and white burial robes from their first appearance in 2012 through to the end of 2017 at which point the robes changed to black. The face paint was replaced with these masks at the start of the 2019 tour (2 days before this performance). I know the masks have changed this year, I don't know if they had different masks in between. This was the Kami Band of the East (the Japanese musicians) - in this instance Takayoshi Ohmura and Leda Cygnus on guitars, BOH on bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums. The Kami Band of the West first appeared for the US leg of the 2019 tour and played on the UK and Europe tour in 2020. They will almost certainly be the Kami band when you see them (Chris Kelly and CJ Masciantonio on guitars, Clint Tustin on bass and Anthony Barone on drums). The official video you watched on Youtube was filmed on the second night of the tour - that was in Yokohama. They played Friday and Saturday there. The video was released on Monday. After coming off stage on Saturday night in Yokohama they went straight to the airport and boarded a plane. They flew half way round the world overnight and landed in London on Sunday morning. From London they drove half way across England to Glastonbury (in SW England) and they went on stage at 12.30pm. You wouldn't have a clue, they looked fresh and were as full of energy as always. I saw them in London 2 days later - they had a proper Babymetal crowd for that show (about 5,000 of us), it was so much better than Glastonbury. Just thought - anybody telling you Su-metal lip syncs has their ears painted on, those people are morons or haters (or both). You know perfectly well those people are just wrong ... I can only imagine they wish their favourite bands had a vocalist even half as good.
