WHICH RENT TO WATCH!?

Ok as much as it pains me to say these words... This will be a very short poll... (inner child laughs hysterically)

And I say this because TONIGHT! I shall be watching and reacting to RENT!

But Which should we watch!? First!? WE COULD WATCH MORE THAN ONE!

Comments

Maybe all three now that I think about it... Unpopular opinion, but I kinda like the Fox Live Version and the Broadway one is unmatched

STAGE BEFORE MOVIE!!! Stage is great....movie is good but leaves alot of context out.

Definitely the Broadway version. I adore the movie cast but RENT was always intended to be a stage musical and there's so much extra stuff in there that is so amazing and the cast is incredible!

If you're a fan of "Hamilton" there will be a pleasant surprise in the 2008 live Broadway presentation on YouTube.

Michael Smith

I vote 2008 stage because that's how it was originally intended to be seen. Of course, if there's a good quality version of the original cast, that would be preferred, but the 2008 version does have Renee Elise Goldsberry (Angelica from Hamilton) and other very talented actors. I just think part of the magic of stage shows is the completely live performance - no retakes, audience as part of the atmosphere, etc.

Emma

I agree with stage production - while watching the original cast in the movie is great, they are all 10 years older than the cast should be.

Raye

TL;DR - Wouldn't you rather get a chance to watch the Show that Jonathan Larson never got a chance to? Honor his memory by trying to "light the candle" in the production he worked to achieve but never got to see live?

There are no wrong moves. That said... Movie gets you more of the original cast or the most iconic of the cast members for various roles. So folks who fell in love with the CD recording usually favor the Movie because the 'voices match' and the interpretations tend to be close to the recording they grew up listening to on repeat. Rent: Live on Broadway 2008 gets you the play, with live performances, captured on film for posterity before the show closed. You get the authentic staging, you see the play as though you are on the stage in many shots, and you have both live performers and live audience members. That means that folks who grew up on Rent or have strong nostalgic ties to the OBC version will NOT be as satisfied here because it's not the original cast, some of the cast have different vocal timbre and interpretation that departs from the CD OBCR. I voted for Broadway because THAT was the medium that Jonathan Larson composed for and intended the show be engaged through. If you want the experience that Larson was compelled (Tick tick BOOM!) to bring you, then imagine had it been possible for either of you, what would Jonathan Larson have invited you to see, if he had both versions to offer to watch the show with you? He didn't write movies. He wrote Broadway shows. For me, that means original format, original intent of the artist, rare recording of a snapshot in time before the show came down off Broadway at the end of its life... my choice is clear. Broadway first to see how Larson intended. And then do the Movie to see how it translated. But not the other way. Otherwise, how will you know whether the parts in the movie are original recipe or extra crispy due to production? But again... you CANNOT make an error in this choice. Either way, dude -- you're watching Rent!

I think watching the original 2005 film would be my vote. Too me its the best and I love the original cast. If I had to pick a second I'd say the live 2019. But just be aware some of it had to be taped because one of the leads broke his leg or hurt his leg and couldn't perform the dance numbers during the some of the live so he sat but still sounded amazing. So that would be my too choices.

Voted for movie because it has almost all of the original cast. It has been tweaked a little but works well. I have it and the stage version but prefer seeing the amazing originals especially Jesse L Martin. Jordan Fisher is the best thing about the live but it wasn't fantastic for me.

Audrey

I think you should start with the movie to get the high production quality and (close to) the original cast and then move on to the stage performances to get the full experience. I think the nuances are more apparent this way.

Jaime

My friend is obsessed with this show so I know she would suggest any of the ones with original cast. She loves Jesse L Martin. I, on the other hand, have heard that damn song 525,600 times because of middle school choral concerts I attended spanning the years my 3 kids were in school. I can’t watch it.

Jaime Tracy

Highly recommend the stage version first if you’re not already familiar with the plot/music

Rachel Addleman

I say movie before stage version! I feel like it’s a better intro and I like the soundtrack better! (Don’t hate me!!)

Aubrey Mayes

I think you have to see the stage version before the movie definitely!! Movie has its own merits, but it's just not the same gritty vibe bc of the obvious production value etc. It is so good, you are going to squeal like a tiny baby at the talent!! CAN'T WAIT!
