In The Heights ( Full Musical Reaction )

Comments

Hey John, just joined your Patreon to watch some musicals with you. I gave a laugh when I saw you were reviewing this movie because I live in Inwood, Manhattan, which is the neighborhood immediately north of the Heights proper, the very top end of Manhattan. Sneeze and you're in the Spuyten Duyvil Creek that separates us from the Bronx. My neighborhood is thought of as part of the Heights, and this region is definitely Little Santo Domingo. When Benny is doing dispatch during the blackout, the call that he dispatches gets sent to Broadway and Nagle, which is the corner where I live. Actually, the funny thing is, the true corner of Broadway and Nagle has no residential buildings on it. For whatever that's worth. Also, the very long subway station that they filmed Paciencia y Fe in is the 191st street station on the 1 line (local red line). The A is the express. Unfortunately it isn't as nicely kept as it was in the movie but it was kind of cool seeing it fully lit up and clean with the fresh artwork on the walls. We're about three coats of paint and graffiti art (which is beautiful sometimes) since the film. Anyway, New York changes all the time and yet still stays vibrant and manages to hold onto what matters. The Heights now are very close to the spirit of the fim still, even though they're down around 125th street and we're up here in the 200s. So take heart that gentrification hasn't completely taken over. The next time that you are in the City, ask for points of interest to visit. The Cloisters in Fort Tryon park makes for an excellent YouTube backdrop with stellar scenic views of the Hudson and the George Washington Bridge to the south, with the Jersey Pallisades to the north. And just down the hill from the Cloisters is Dyckman Street, which is commercial center for the region and home to tons of authentic Dominican and other Latino Caribbean and a general mix to a whole United Nations worth of various Latin American restaurants, bars, and clubs. It is WAY off the beaten path, and one of the local gems that few tourists think to explore, so it remains kind of a local treasure trove. Sure some of the food joints are holes in the wall dives, but the food is amazing and they're the real deal all the locals frequent. Always a street fair atmosphere every weekend evening with the dance clubs, and some week nights as well. And there's more extending from Dyckman up Broadway from the Cloisters as well. Happy to send you a list of places to hit on your visit. Point being that the Heights remains vital, an bunch of artists and musicians who make their home there from all walks of life (we had an operatic soprano with an E7 practicing to get us through Covid some nights), a wide mix of cultures, a wide mix of Spanish dialects and Hispanoamerican Cultures. Very much the pulse and heartbeat which the movie celebrates. Check it out.

DreamTeam002

I know you asked it early in the video, but my childhood dream (after first reading the story of Helen Keller) was to teach kids with special needs. I am finishing up my 31st year of doing just that. :)

Seconding Come From Away stage production

Come From Away is fantastic

To add some context: Abuela’s saying of “Paciencia y Fè” means Patience and Faith. Also, for Sonny: he was brought to the U.S by his parents (most likely under a tourist visa) and they stayed, like many, to give their child a good chance at life. He had no say as to his immigration status, and now he has to fight in order to remain and afford to go to college. Loved that you got the gist of Nina’s struggle. I was in a similar boat as her, and it’s quite common for all first generation immigrants children. Carry the dreams of the community on your back. And then you go out into the world, and it is hard to find a community like the one at home and in order to fit in, you quiet what makes you you and trade in your culture for a white American one. Recommendations: like many people mentioned, Tick Tick Boom is a solid choice. Similar to this one in filming style. Newsies is one that was filmed like Hamilton, on Disney+ and I love it.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=3a3MhuDpwGc&feature=shares This is Waitress. I found complete Spring Awakening and Dear Evan Hansen on YouTube also.

Tick Tick Boom is about Jonathan Larson (who wrote Rent) and Lin directed it. Lin also did the songs in the animated films Moana, Encanto and Vivi (he’s the voice of the monkey in Vivo) and they are both really wonderful. Chris Jackson (Washington) sings in Moana. Rent was a game changer. (Larson died just before it opened on Broadway) Disney + has the Broadway version of Newsies with Jeremy Jordan! (They have the film too but the live Broadway pro shot with Jeremy is the best!) If you can find a copy of Waitress, it’s wonderful- Sarah Brailles wrote all the songs! Come from Away is available(broadway pro shot) on Apple TV- it’s the true story of Gander- a small town in Newfoundland that had 38 planes diverted to their airport after 9/11 - the town of around 9000 took in about 7,000 for 5 days. It’s about 90 minutes, straight through, no intermission. Dear Evan Hansen is lovely- but not the movie, there are YouTube’s of the Broadway show with Ben Platt playing Evan. And Spring Awakening is amazing- the play was written around 1900 and was banned because of the subject matter for 100 hundred years. Duncan Sheik bought the rights and wrote the songs to make it a musical- hit Broadway in 2006. It’s a coming of age story set in 1890s Germany about teenagers battling sexual awakening, abuse, sexual preference, mental illness…. and the first time I saw it it struck me how we’re still not talking to our kids about this stuff… the music is great and the story important. You might be able to find it on You Tube.

Angie Shaw

I’d suggest Tick tick boom then Rent (stage recording not movie) then the new west side story perhaps.

I recommend Tick tick boom and Come From Away as the next to watch!! Thanks for this, Ive seen In The Heights once, but watching it again and experiencing it through your “newbie” eyes was fun! I’m a musical freak. When I was a kid, my mom would let me stay up late to watch the old musicals that came on the CBC on Sundays. I long got over the fact that, yes, people just randomly break out into song and dance, when they FEEL something. Keep going, I’m a Patreon BECAUSE you are doing musicals!!!

27:05 I had to pause the video at 27:05 John because of tears flowing down my face from what you said 🥹 you can see from the shininess of your eyes that it had hit a place in your heart & as a daughter who’s biological father did not protect her that hit a place in my heart💜🫶🏻

on the original broadway run of in the heights, lin manuel played usnavi, he loves to write the leads for himself haha. he did a sweet interview where he talked about how awesome it was to watch anthony ramos step into his role as usnavi after they worked so long together in hamilton. if you want to finish your lin manuel musical saga, there's a movie musical called tick tick boom that came out on netflix last year that was directed by him featuring andrew garfield as the lead that i would absolutely recommend it's a great look into the struggle that music artists face trying to make it and will lead into other musicals down the line. i hope that this got you hooked and that you won't be apprehensive to keep going with musicals bc as i've said before, just like with music there are all different kinds of genres of musicals and there's something for everyone, and if they're well done you'll find something that's for you! can't wait to see what's next

have you ever reacted to six the musical its sort of like hamilton but its about the six wives of king henry the 8th all female lead even the band is female if not i suggest reacting to it the slime tutorial is a little shaky but the proshot with the obc is great and i am pretty sure there is a slime tutorial with different angles as well but i suggest the proshot which i have the link for if you are interested.

Les Misérables or The Phantom of the Opera would be a good introduction to a more 'classical' musicals.

If you are willing to branch into animation, the same creator is behind the movie Vivo and it is great!

Doing my job once again just like with Hamilton aka fun little tidbits: 1. Christopher Jackson is obviously Washington as you realised! But usnavi played Laurens in the first half of Hamilton and Philip (Hamiltons son) in the second half. 2. The actor who plays abuela Claudia is actually the original broadway abuela claudia, back when it was first on broadway in 2008. 3. Daniela, the salon lady who owns it, was part of the original broadway cast of rent (I have a sneaking suspicion that’s going to be a musical you will react to in the near future) 4. The laundry dude that bought off part of Nina’s dad company is actually from the original broadway and off-broadway cast of hadestown (which is one of the best musicals recently, I highly highly recommend it!) As much as I want someone to react to hadestown it’ll be a little difficult because there’s only bootlegs (pretty good ones though) so my next actual recommendation would be tick tick boom which is lin manuel Miranda’s directorial debut. I think that would be neat to your journey of going through his stuff. It follows the creator (Jonathan Larson) of the musical rent, that I mentioned before, during a week in his life where he was preparing for his first musicals workshops. It’s a little complicated to explain but it’s amazing, such a good adaptation of the creators first musical. If rent wins a poll then I highly recommend checking tick tick boom first just to get a sense of who the creator was. Thank you for starting to react to musicals, there’s not enough people who do!

Let the credits go and there’s another scene with Lin and Chris Jackson!!!

Also, the blackout and heatwave wasn't a specific historical one, though they do happen in NYC every few years, especially during heatwaves when the strain on the power supply is greatest. This is definitely not the 1980s, though. You can tell from the lines they say/sing and the fact that they all have smartphones. If they were using cell phones in the 80s, they definitely wouldn't be poor and they'd be using these massive bricks that were about as big as your head.

Scribbles

Storm!!! thank you lol I dont know how or WHY that flew over my head but I was SO lost to what he was dispatching LOL!

John Reaves

That's a taxi service, and Benny is a dispatcher, sending the drivers out to specific places and telling them about traffic problems so they can avoid them.

Scribbles

Oh boy something fun to watch after work. Thanks John🫶🏻💜

SugaIsMyPetRock (Pamela)

lol sorry it took me a moment!I really wanted to finish the whole musical in one sitting so finding the time was hard

John Reaves

Yay! Finally!!
