August Poll Results and Some Questions For the Community

Hello!

The poll results are in!

Okay, I'm going to keep the upcoming schedule and final updates brief because I wanted to ask the community some questions about the patreon moving forward (nothing serious, it's more like a survey πŸ˜„). I will say I'm (pleasantly) surprised the Huron Fal/Temeter suggestion won since it's a relatively minor event in the Horus Heresy and I didn't expect that many members to be aware of it. πŸ˜„ πŸ‘

So I know Ferrus took the top spot this month but Perturabo got there months ago and I'm afraid if I wait any longer the Lord of Iron will turn me into a dreadnought. πŸ˜… But Ferrus will be added to the guaranteed queue now.

In the Xenos side, I'll do the Ork Attack Moon and if I think I can fit the Warp Spider Exarch I'll include that as well but it's probably going to be queued.

In terms of final WIPs, I'll have a few versions of Devastator and a new Megatron pose to point him at the Autobots. And for the bonus 1 year+ September reward, I thought I'd expand on the idea of the IG gunner and do some versions for Heavy Weapons Teams. No you can choose proxies for a Heavy Bolter, Lascannon, Autcannon and Mortar team!

Alright, so for the past year I've managed to keep my head down and just let the polls do their thing. Things went relatively smoothly and I didn't feel like I needed to change the formula. However, I have noticed the community hasn't been growing and patreon really hasn't been doing me any favors this year. They seem to change something every month with strange gimmicks to their platform and who is considered an active member which is frustrating to navigate. Plus post reactions/feedback has been diminishing so this leads me to believe the current polling/monthly release system has become stagnant.

Does this mean I should make some sort of change on how I do things on patreon? To be honest, I have no idea. I figure it's best for the community to decide instead of me deciding for them. So I would like to ask some questions to community:

Just to be clear, I won't deviate from my current formula until I get some feedback but I would like to get the conversation started. Please feel free to PM me or comment on the post below. I'll do my best to reply back when I am able to. Thanks! πŸ‘

Alrighty, get your minis ready because next month we are tackling the Legion that actually plays 40K tabletop in-universe. Iron Within, Iron Without!

Hi M, Thanks for the feedback! πŸ‘ I'm still thinking about number 3 but I'll let the community know if I remove anything from the welcome pack. If I do remove anything from the standard welcome pack, I'll provide a way for current community members to access it like a reward link instead.

3DArtGuy

For me, if 3. happened it would be a huge problem and a chore to download everything in a panic before it's lost. I really hope this doesn't happen. Maybe you could create a curated collection for people who have difficulty with complex things, but removing access for old fans isn't cool. You're the first Patreon I joined after I started 3d printing, I keep paying because I love your work but I haven't printed anything in a while, and I like the idea that everything is nice and cozy in the welcome pack if I need it.

M

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I agree! πŸ‘

3DArtGuy

1. I'm here for the Grimdark models. There's SSSOOOO much history and SOOOO many characters that you literally could do it forever.... The fantasy side would be cool too.

Hoptu

Thanks for the detailed feedback! πŸ‘ You make an interesting point for number one, I've never thought of doing it that way but I'll have to think about such a drastic change. Thanks for the rest of the breakdown as well, I really appreciate it!

3DArtGuy

I'm pretty sure I'll get to them eventually. They're pretty consistently high in the polls. πŸ˜„πŸ‘

3DArtGuy

1. I love the cycles, but would prefer a little more grim dark, only because there's so much to get through and you're so damn good at it. So, I would suggest a cycle of four: Fantasy/Grimdark/Sci Fi/Grimdark. 2. Theming months would be nice, but I don't see it as necessary. I've come to appreciate the variety you provide, but it might be better for folks who are looking for a particular faction. Keep monthly releases as long as you're okay with the schedule and workload. I find the "until it's ready" release system to be problematic for patreons. I haven't seen anyone really be able to be successful with it. Regular monthly releases appear to do a lot better. 3. I think you'd be ok trimming the welcome pack even further down to 15 or so designs. Then update it/replace it every six months. Just make sure to give all your current patrons ample notice/time to download the current one. 4. Putting out content that people want is key. You might have to put in something in the monthly releases outside of the poll winners to get more outside interest. But that's a tough balance because you want to make sure you keep your current ones. Doing sponsored videos with YouTube creators that do statue painting has worked well for some other Patreons, but they also do more comic book related statues. 5. I'd like to see larger scales to make statue printing easier, but I can always scale it up in the slicer, too. So, no strong feelings on this one.

Richard Denny

I was realy hoping to get kharn and his bff

Bjorn Rega

Thanks for the feedback! πŸ‘ I'll see if I can find a better balance.

3DArtGuy

I think the Fantasy and Sci-Fi should be less grimdark (make the line less blurry)

SteveB

Hi, thank you very much for the detailed feedback! πŸ‘ I understand your concerns for point 2. Although I have seen other patreons dedicate months to a certain faction and the idea does seem popular. Perhaps it's best to try it on and off certain months. I'm glad you like the welcome pack! Yeah, I've been trying different ways to do advertising although I don't really have that much time to dedicate to it since I need to actually design stuff. But yes, I'll try to get the word out more. Good idea for point 5, I'll have to look that more. And thanks again for all the feedback, it's greatly appreciated! πŸ‘

3DArtGuy

Scale is good for me, I rescale everyone's creations based on if I am using them for games or painting. I think the more you get your creations out there, the more interest you will stir up. You have lots of cool figures!

Steve Hurley

I would also like to give some feedback regarding your questions! 1. While I will always crave for mor Grimdark content from you, I always enjoyed the cycle. Needles to say that the borders between scifi/fantasy/grimdark always blurred from times to times. So I'm totally fine with how it currently is 2. While I see the benefit of themed months I also see some potential for issues. What is when you decide to for example an SW Separatist month with all kinds of battle droids and separatist characters and a number of people simply don't like it? And let's say in the next month is Squat month? Why would someone (except for the part to support you anyway) sub then for the forseeable future? Sure while a lot of things from different factions/universes might be a wild mix, I still feel that there is always at least something for everyone there. 3. NGL your welcome best is one of the best if not the best out there. Having the bulwark of your work available was for me one of the selling points to get in. However I would love to see it restructured since it can be trouble some to skip threw all the months to pick up (for example) all the grimdark characters etc. Especially for newcomers is ist probably a bit overwhelming since they don't know where to find it and then it's a bit of a pain. That would be my two cents to it. 4. I can't say for sure if my thoughts on this would help you but what comes to my mind is to expand your internet presence. Your insta account posts from time to time a few things, I would entensivy, repost wonderful makes & hastags. Maybe a bit like a snowball system but there more it get's shared the more attention you get. Like Red Makers, Red Warden or Fummelfinger just to name a few examples. It could also help to expand the places were you sell your models. I for my part do not really like mmf and got it because of you. I can only imagine that a lot of people use cults, gumroad & other sides. The availablity of a print service could also possibly help. I also saw your teamup with Majorkill, something you could also consider doing more in the future :) It defenitely helps to raise your deserved attention :) 5. Well I'm fine with your current scaling options. The only tip/thought I could give you on this is to make a general sheet that gives people the ability to rescale stuff with instructions. Idk like 100 mm version at x % = 28/32 mmm 1:56 scale. This could probably also eliminate some reoccuring questions. Well this was a wall of text. No matter what happens I will stay on this, my first patreon pledge until the last light of the sun dies or you decide to quite (I never let that happen!) Your models are great and while I don't print as much as I could/should I enjoy them a lot! Greetings Big Al

Big Al

Hi, thank you for the honest feedback! πŸ‘ I think all your points are valid, anime is not my strong suit. πŸ˜… I also understand the high polycount issue and try to do more optimization. Primarch proxies, I do try to do my own spin nowadays but I do hope fans will let me know if they want specific changes to keep in the spirit of the subject matter. Thank you again for letting me know the areas which I need to improve on, it's greatly appreciated! πŸ‘

3DArtGuy

Yeah I think that's solid enough, but I haven't had a chance to do many prints myself so I'm not entirely up on scaling and what I need to adjust to say, make one of your Prime Individuals correct scale for 32mm scifi wargaming of unspecified origin.

TwoHeavens. Esq

I think the 3D printing / STL scene has come a long way since I started over 3 years ago. Your model was the one that started me in this hobby. I literally bought a 3D printer because I wanted to print one of your models. That said, just want to share some frank, constructive criticisms. In my opinion, you do Grimdark best. Followed by Scifi. Human / anime characters aren't your strong suit. It may be the way you sculpt (i.e. you start with a standing pose of the character before you position it in different poses), but a good number of your sculpts don't look natural in the way they pose. I suppose it's akin to posing an action figurine; it's difficult to get it to look quite right. Also, sometimes, the body proportions are off. If I imagine the character without the armour, the body will not look right, e.g. neck too long, shoulders not where they are supposed to be, arms too long, etc. Secondly, because of you-know-who who is constantly breathing down your neck, your character sculpts now deviate quite a lot from who they were intended to be, which kinda defeats the purpose. For me, your sculpts used to be the "sculpt" for a particular Primarch, but I am afraid that's no longer the case. Finally, I hope you can reduce the polygon count while maintaining the level of detail (which is possible as I noticed often times the polygon mesh is too fine). Because of the high polygon count, the files are very large, which means they take longer to download and more space to store. Also, the high polygon count makes the model "unwieldy" in the slicer program as more RAM is needed to process the large file. All in all, I still very much appreciate your sculpts and will remain a patron into the foreseeable future. I just hope you'll take some of the above points into consideration.

Grey Paladin

Good stuff! πŸ‘

3DArtGuy

Cool, I'll try to do more slice of life stuff then! πŸ‘ I'll have to get to more BG3 characters as well for campfire stuff but I'll definitely keep those characters in mind in the future. πŸ˜„

3DArtGuy

Oooo, I love slice of life stuff!! I'd love to see a campfire session with some of the BG3 characters πŸ₯°

Jo Murwood

That sounds interesting to me at least.

Johnny Turbo

Thanks for the feedback! πŸ‘ I'm glad you like the current setup. πŸ˜„

3DArtGuy

Thank you very much for the detailed feedback! πŸ‘ Yeah, I've resisted doing Tribes as I didn't want to split my attention on too many platforms but lately I have been thinking of doing a dollar Tribe of one new character per month to stir up interest. I have heard of other creators making their stuff compatible with OPR but I never really looked into what that meant. Maybe I should reach out to them and see if that's something that could happen. I did think of another question - is the the standard scale that I release each item okay with you (i.e. 50mm for single characters and 100mm for characters in parts)? πŸ˜„

3DArtGuy

Thank you very much for the detailed feedback! πŸ‘ Yeah faction month could be a thing. πŸ˜„ Yeah, I'll see what stuff to keep on the welcome pack. I do try to redirect MMF users to my patreon whenever I can. I thought of another question - is the the standard scale that I release each item okay with you (i.e. 50mm for single characters and 100mm for characters in parts)?

3DArtGuy

1. I joined for the Grimdark, but stayed for the cycle :) I definitely enjoy the current 3 month cycle. So many great models I wouldn't have gotten otherwise. 2. Themes would be cool, though I enjoy the "spaghetti." Whatever helps your creativity. 4. For outreach, I understand it's tough because you can't necessarily advertise with the "angry companies" watching. Maybe an occasional purely original design that can be fully shown and advertised, something that can bring newcomers in.

Matt

1) I have been with you for a few years now, I like the detailed models you create. I do like the Grimdark stuff but I would also like to see your take on some of the AoS characters and classes. The Dioramas are a pretty cool plus. Ghamak did this and they make some pretty cool stuff. 2) Themes would be cool, but I like the spaghetti too. The spaghetti seems to fuel your creativity by making several different nonrelated figures. 3) The welcome pack could be more organized 4) To be honest, I have asked you before to open a tribe on My Mini Factory. You will get much more visibility. I get tons of new creator emails from MMF promoting new artists. I also search for particular characters like a druid or dragon and usually find 2 to 3 more artists I have never seen or heard of and usually end up joining their tribe. MMF also has promotions, sales, and cross-promotions between artists, and Frontiers.... I don't get any emails from Patreon promoting you. I have to look up on Patreon to find out what you are putting out for the month. And their new layout is confusing to me. You, One Page Rules, and Mr. Modulork are the last creators I sponsor, I don't even look for new ones on Patreon. Patreon has screwed up my subscriptions at least four times and it is too difficult dealing with their non-responsive customer, "if it doesn't work, try a different credit card" Well I ran out of cc to try. MMF customer service always responds within 12 to 24 hrs. Another idea would be to get involved with OPR, Titan Forge, Archvillian, and Artisan Guild to make your creations compatible with their games by providing stats for your characters. They would probably help you. Do cross-promotions with bigger figure creators. They even have their websites to promote their figures and games. A third idea would be to get involved with a painter or painter academy, some of your figures painted up would attract more people. Maybe even a printer academy, sponsor some resin or printer giveaways. Sponsor a painting contest. get people excited about what you are doing. A fourth idea is to do what Loot Studios does by having their websites with YouTube videos showing assembling and painting their figures and then playing a game. This is what I have seen other artists successfully do over the years. You have just been doing the same thing over the years and that is fine. But if you want to grow, you should branch out some.

Steve Hurley

1. I like the three month cycle personally. I enjoy the minis we get out of those months just as much as the grimdark. 2. That could be cool. Maybe do a unit or two of troops for a faction month plus some heroes? That actually could draw some eyes to the patreon I bet, because people seem to be going towards buying armies these days 2D printing wise. 3. I think that's reasonable. The welcome pack is absurdly generous. Though just because an item's old, I wouldn't ditch it from the pack. Maybe keep some classic stuff based on revenue and popularity? Like the 'Angel' model, Celeste maybe? ;) Is what got me in to your stuff. Seeing on the MMF page that that's in the welcome pack for patreon would be a strong encouragement to go direct to the source instead of buy the mini. If that's legal to advertise on MMF. 4. I'm wrestling with that myself. I would guess part of your slow down is certain evil forces tightening the screws regarding third party minis. You can't show off some of the most popular, and therefore most likely to go viral, models. I'm not entirely sure how to get clear of that completely.

TwoHeavens. Esq

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you like the welcome pack! πŸ‘ Yeah, I actually have a reward system/loyalty pack structure as well. πŸ˜„ The vault bonus releases sounds like a interesting idea that I might explore but I'll see how things go. Thanks again!

3DArtGuy

Thanks for the feedback! πŸ‘

3DArtGuy

Thanks for the feedback! πŸ‘ Yeah, themed months sounds popular in the community so that's looking more likely. The welcome pack size is sort of 50/50 based on the comments so I'll have to think about that. I also got a great idea to do more slice of life dioramas for fantasy stuff. Would that be something you like to see? πŸ˜„

3DArtGuy

Thank you very much for the detailed feedback! πŸ‘ I think largely the community is fine with the current 3 month cycle but I might be able to accommodate your request for smaller sets and themed months might help as well. I can also work towards re-organizing the welcome pack to the three categories like you mentioned. I'm really glad you like the Grimdark stuff I put out! πŸ˜„πŸ‘

3DArtGuy

I think mixing up would be nice. I like the artists choices as well.

Johnny Turbo

For what it's worth, I don't see that your style lends itself to armies. Your work is beautifully detailed and most of that will be lost at tabletop scale and also push people's printers. Focal point and hero characters where you want to paint carefully and have lots of detail to paint seems to fit.

Matthew Flegal

Anyways, apologies for the long posts. Part of my day job is projecting commercial product viability so my brain goes into analysis mode!

Matthew Flegal

The proxies are always cool for me, but it makes it hard to make suggestions because they are so "me" focussed. I've been involved in garage kits and aftermarket for so long and it's just as legendary for 500 people saying "I would totally buy that!" and then you sell 2. . . Space Marines and Sisters of Battle always seem to be favorites and when I talk with others those HH marines are talked about a lot because there are very few models out there and the game figures are fairly stylized and low detail Outside of your diorama figures there's very, very little out there that can be scaled for something larger than 3-4 inches without looking goofy. For larger figures there seems to be a combination of people who like collections and people who like a particular legion. The former (me!) would love a collection where I can have every legion represented with a single figure (I tend to go with Sgt's and Captains just because they tend to have more legion specific decoration and bling so more fun to paint and more of a separation between them visually) and the latter could pick the one that they want to do. Pus with HH you can pick the iconic mark of armor for each legion that also makes them visually distinct. Same idea for the various marks of armor, anyone who likes collections and displays would likely be drawn to that, as you have so many options to paint and it would look so cool as a display. Sisters of battle have a lot of figures out there but honestly, a lot of them are either really skewed proportion-wise or boring in pose. Its what I love about your chaos marines as they are dynamic and attacking and not just standing passively. Attacking or some sort of action pose would be a big differentiator. Same as there are very few with helmet options and that's a shame, especially as lot of people are intimidated by painting female faces! Of course, as a child of the 80's everyone knows that your kick-ass Amazonian valkyrie should be in 80's Brigitte Nielsen likeness (and actually, how has nobody released a good Brigitte Nielsen Red Sonja figure anyway? LOL). Personally, I'd dearly love Death Guard and Eldar but those never seem to attract a lot of interest outside of named female Eldar. Shame, God knows my OCD self would love an Eldar from every aspect shrine.

Matthew Flegal

I'm gonna try to be helpful 🀞🏻 😀 🀞🏻 1. I've been here almost entirely for the SciFi/fantasy stuff. As much as I like Grimdark, it's not my go-to area, or the reason I joined up but not everything can be for me. The current cycle is something I'm familiar with but I'd be keen to see a shakeup, if only to see how it feels. Maybe a little bit of each genre a month? 2. Faction months for grimdark or fantasy (for ttwg, I guess 😜) sounds like a great idea! I'm also quite happy to receive smaller packs for you to spend more time to work on the 'until it's ready' stuff without worrying about a deadline. 3 Yep, I feel like 30-40 is an amazing welcome pack, the welcome pack back when I started was enough for me and it's crazy large now. If you want some kind of input from us, would you like us to vote on our top 30 from the current lot? 4. This one is more difficult for me to answer. I think the polls are a decent way to gauge it but if too many of us aren't getting notifications, or forgetting to take them, then yeah it'll be difficult to get the data for that. I'm sorry I'm not more helpful with this one. I guess it might depend on what you're looking to achieve. I think you're doing great as it is though 😁 Alot of the feedback I've been reading here is clever and we'll thought out, I don't think you're gonna have a lack of ideas!

Jo Murwood

Hey 3DArtGuy, I just want to start by saying how much we love your work. The realism and detail you put into your designs are truly unmatched, and it’s one of the main reasons we’ve kept supporting you. As a Grimdark-only store, your creations fit perfectly with what we offer, and honestly, if you could ever do full squads, that would be a dream come true for us! 1. Grimdark, Fantasy, and Sci-Fi Balance: Since our store focuses exclusively on Grimdark, that’s where our interest lies. We truly appreciate your passion for Fantasy and Sci-Fi, but for us, sticking to Grimdark or even expanding it would be ideal. We think concentrating on Grimdark, or even offering Grimdark-exclusive months, would better serve your core audience, especially those of us who specialize in that genre. 2. Themed Monthly Releases: The idea of themed monthly releases is really exciting, especially for a Grimdark-focused store like ours. It would allow us to plan our listings and promotions better. However, the way you currently drop large batches of models at once can be challenging for us to manage. If you could release smaller, more frequent setsβ€”perhaps even focusing on full squadsβ€”that would be incredible. It would help us streamline our processes and ensure your work gets the attention it deserves on our storefront. 3. Welcome Pack Size: The welcome pack is fantastic but perhaps a bit overwhelming for both new customers and us. Trimming it down to 30-40 models, reorganized into Grimdark, Fantasy, Sci-fi would make it more manageable and allow us to focus on your latest Grimdark creations, which are where we see the most interest. And holy crap, downloading the current welcome pack even with 1g speed took forever, lol. Make the extra models "loyalty rewards" on a monthly bases, rotating out older designs. 4. Growing the Community: To help grow your community, we think a focus on what your core audience lovesβ€”like your highly detailed Grimdark modelsβ€”would be beneficial. Simplifying the release process would also make it easier for stores like ours to showcase your work more consistently. Additionally, engaging with the community through polls or feedback sessions, particularly about Grimdark content and the possibility of squads, could help you better align your releases with what we’re all looking for. Thanks again for your incredible work. With a few tweaks to the process, we’re confident that your designs will continue to shine and that we’ll be able to feature them even more prominently in our store.

Clint D.

Some people break up their welcome pack into welcome and loyalty packs. You get one big pack, and then for every month you stay on, you get another month of previous models, or you have your standard release, and a bonuses release from "the vault". The bonus makes it easier for you because you don't have to keep track of every member getting a different month.

phillip trujillo

I joined due to a collaboration with another Patreon, and that you offer diorama style models instead of army, and because I had to see for myself if your welcome pack was absolutely this massive. You have not disappointed. My only complaint is that it took three tries to download the while file because I had to turn off the sleep settings. It took all day to download.

phillip trujillo

Thanks for the feedback! πŸ‘ Yeah, going through the comments, I'm getting a general sense that community members would like a faction or themed month somewhere along the line. πŸ˜„

3DArtGuy

Thanks for the feedback! πŸ‘ Okay, I'm glad the current system does work for community members. πŸ˜„

3DArtGuy

Thanks for the feedback! Those are all very good points. πŸ‘ Yes, I would like to find more people who are not already here but am not sure what the best method to achieve that is. πŸ˜„

3DArtGuy

I subscribed mostly for the grimdark, (the primarchs was the stuff that made me join) so i can't rly say about the other themes. However i would indeed love a more structured approach when it come to the choices of new project, a month = 1 or 2 faction sound good to me. Adding a bit of proxy units for the wargames would be fantastic, the heavy weapons team is a great idea. most creators work on whole armies but they do nothing else. Having someone who make magnificent sculpt for an elite unit i can put in my army sound pretty nice and most of the times these units doesn't have a lot of options or figures wich can be great for dynamic or scenic poses. Your previous sculpts already reflect that idea, with the named characters.

Lucas Kucheida

I think we have people who like more or less all three polls (ex. i like fantasy and sci-fi more than grimdark) but patreon is not a costant grown platform, a lot of people move between creators monthly, others have hard financial time, who knows other situations... I don't know how patreon work for creators but i think you have a good system and offer

Andrea

For sure, this and quality are the reasons yours is the only Patreon I never unsubscribe from when I'm budgeting haha

Christopher Smith

Most Patreons that I see are making full armies or sets to play with wither wargames or ttrpgs. Most of them also follow a topic. One month it's undead, the next deamons, the one after that elementals. Your models are more up for show and not for play. But I'm not suggesting to switch to that pattern. There are months where I'm interested in only one of the models but that's fine because I can't print that much anyway and it's still worth it for just that one model. As for the stagnation, many are in a harder financial situations than a year or two ago. So that might be a reason. I see a lot of Patreons advertising in one way or another so that might help as well thou it might be expensive itself and hard to find the right spot to place it. There are a few 3D printer reviewers that often mention certain creators. And last but not least maybe you should aks people who are not already here. I mean if you already got us you must be doing something right in our minds.

NNextremNN

Thanks for the feedback! πŸ‘

3DArtGuy

Thanks for the feedback! πŸ‘ Yes, I've been working on a better search for the welcome pack items. I'll PM you the details.

3DArtGuy

I haven't been subscribed for that long, but for me, the fantasy is definitely the top thing. I think the grimdark stuff is really strong too (not that I print much of it, but I recognize how well-done the models are and how valuable other patrons consider them), and I honestly think the sci-fi is the least draw for me.

Doug Swarin

I've been subscribed to you for a long time, mostly for the grimdark models tbh. Not alot of interest in transformers or manga, though the quality of the latter is fantastic. I wouldn't mind seeing some AoS fantasy stuff but there are SO many other competitors in that space and I have a backlog that would probably require me to take out a loan to purchase the resin to print them... I'd like to see months dedicated to a theme rather than a faction, maybe a guaranteed primarch/character, vehicle, diorama every alternating few months, and poll specifically for that theme. (I suppose similar for fantasy, creature/character/terrain?). In terms of the large welcome pack - I like access to the backlog, but maybe a reorganization and presentation so finding specifical models is easier rather than searching month to month, and putting your most popular and impressive models front and center.

1. I love sci-fi and fantasy more than drimdark, but it seems you could combine the two and switch each month. 2. I think themes would cool and maybe satisfy more people. 3. I personally would like to see the welcome pack still available. Just my 2 cents. 4. No idea man. Just keep being the Boss?

Dan Gelinas

I'd prefer more Grimdark and less fantasy. Maybe shift the fantasy and sci fi sections together and then have them be an 'alternative cycle', and then do grimdark one month alternative the next. I'm really only here for the Grimdark content. I'd prefer to see everything else completely eliminated tbh. Though I can see why you'd need a break. It'd be cool if you could do more focused selections. Like an Eldar month, Ork month etc.

disasterpasta

Thanks, I'm glad you're looking forward to that one! And thanks for the feedback! I'll see what I can do with those proxy suggestions moving forward. πŸ‘

3DArtGuy

Thanks for the information! πŸ‘ Yeah, I can't really pump out huge armies every month. I think it's best to stick to unique stuff. πŸ˜„

I'll start with the fact I'm super looking forward to the virus bomb pair a noise marine makes me feel all happy! That stated, I have some thoughts on the Patreon I'm in it for grimdark but I certainly enjoy the sci-fi stuff. The problem is that there are some great Star Wars figure Patreons already and I have to think competing would difficult. You could steer towards less obvious characters but I'd assume that less obvious equals less popular. Maybe target other franchises, especially female figures? I see a lot of wish lists (which doesn't mean actually spending money sadly) for Star Trek figures of Uhura and especially Saavik, Sybil Danning from Battle Beyond the Stars, and so into the cult sci-fi stuff. I don't know that anyone has ever dipped their toes into Babylon 5 figures? Fantasy wise there is tons of stuff that I'd love to see but I don't know that they'd draw anyone to make it worth the effort On the grimdark part I would say that there surprisingly aren't a lot of decent artists out there that do anything realistic; most of them would make a great game figure but are way too cartoonish to print larger. Sisters always seem to be popular and you did some great ones that are long unavailable. I keep coming back to a run of proxies for the original 18 HH stock marines but that may be because I would freaking love to do the whole run with each one with the decorative differences; a line of Sgt's and Captains would make me ever so happy. Same with a run of each armor mark in a generic legionaire. Having a run of Mk.1 through Mk.VII would be awesome and I guess later ones would be OK. I always think Chaos marines would be of interest although my beloved plague marines never seem to rank highly in votes. Noise marine may tell the story. And if you wanted to have a Daemonette on the other side from the corrupted SoB (and boy, a Slaanesh corrupted SoB could go pretty far!) would be cool and your demons have been all really cool. But I don't think I've seen a legitimate accurate Daemonette out there that really makes them creepy without being ugly. Most of them are either just sexy chicks with horns and not even the claws or they are horrific ugly creatures. I think having seen your female figures you could make them look attractive and creepy but not hideous in a way nobody else seems to have pulled off. Can you track downloads in any way to see which ones you've done get the most interest?

Hi, thanks for the clarification, that's very valuable information! πŸ‘ Yes, I think I understand the 'slice of life' angle you're describing and the blank canvas type of character that you can put your own spin on. Sure, let me think about how I can incorporate more of those types of characters into the rotation. Maybe that's the sort of thing I'll start doing as the monthly bonus reward. Thank you again for helping me improve the patreon! πŸ˜„πŸ‘

For content, there is a rare person that is going to print every primarch and lieutenant but lots of people that will jump in if they can print 70-80% of a viable army. But those are the patreons that I hop on and off depending if they are doing something interesting to me. So I really am not qualified to give advice haha

You’re the first Patreon I joined and am here for the haul. Still tons or grimdark and fantasy to do and I love when you mix things up. Keep up the great work!

Christopher Fry

For growth, I feel like the things that push me to a Patreon are either seeing the models for sale and liking them enough to not be able to afford to buy them all or seeing someone's painted work. Maybe get some models in higher profile painters hands somehow? Or good up and comers.

im all about the proxies for wargaming

I've certainly never felt like I was neglected, just not in the majority, which you (rightfully) cater to most. I definitely like scifi as well! I just prefer character models, rather than vehicles, robots, whatever. I of course really loved the times you did a character I really like, such as Malenia, Femshep, Master Chief, etc. However, overall my favorites are just non-specific characters. It's great to have characters that you like! But when it's not a character from a specific thing, just a person, you can really paint them to be anything you want. If it's Master Chief, for example, well... It's Master Chief. His armor is green with a gold visor, and you know all the details. If it's just a generic character... Your Succubus from a long time ago is a great example (my favorite one you've ever done!), it's really a blank canvas for however you personally envision that character! It allows for so much more creativity when painting. I also prefer female models to male, which are definitely in the minority here, being that it's heavily focused on characters in combat and things like that. I suppose, typing it all out, that may also be another thing that I'm less of a fan of. Just about every character is posed like they're the ultimate badass (in most cases, because they are in their own stories). I'm subscribed to a couple other artists who do more sort of... Slice of life sort of things. For example, maybe it's still a knight, but it's after a battle, nursing their wounds. Instead of the character killing the monster, maybe they're just exploring a dark cave or something, things like that. I'm not trying to tell you that you do a poor job, far from it! Your work is incredible, and you put out nothing but high quality, while remaining very active on here. It's just my own preferences, and I hope you don't feel like I'm putting you down in any way! If you want an example, some I'm picturing while typing are the characters Nix and Belle from Ritual Design, or something like Luna from Nerikson, which show up in a Google search

1. Historically the fanbase heavily skews towards Grimdark. But I've always maintained I wanted to include Fantasy, Sci Fi in the mix because I really like doing that stuff even if it's not as popular. So question one, what would be the best way to do that moving forward? Should I keep the three month cycle of Fantasy/Sci Fi/Grimdark or mix it up? Keep it, i am more for grimdark, but the fantasy and scifi keeps it fresh and does keep me interested in it. 2. I've been getting some suggestions to make months themed to a particular faction instead of throwing a spaghetti's worth of suggestions on the refrigerator and seeing what sticks. Would the community be amenable to that? Should I change releases from a monthly release system or one that is 'until it's ready'?3. I've let the welcome pack grow to an absolutely ridiculous size as I assumed that would help attract new community members but that is apparently no longer the case. Should I start trimming it down and getting rid of the oldest sets and just have a more standard 30-40 designs in the welcome pack? Trimming it down would help. 4. The last question is kind of broad, but what are your thoughts on how to grow the community organically moving forward? In the past, it just did without me doing anything specific. But as times change so do the audiences' tastes so I'll need to figure what the community is looking for. Id say a single cosplay item, helmet, prop or decoration, every two or three months could be good to get a new clientele without pushing the current members away.

Hi, thanks for the feedback I really appreciate it! πŸ‘ I don't necessarily want to change the structure or tip things more in one theme's favor. But I do want to get a better sense if community members want something to change. As a long term member, I greatly value your input and don't want you to feel neglected. I understand you like the Fantasy Month stuff the most and stay for that. May I ask if there is any particular kind of Fantasy content you would like to see more of? In terms of Sci Fi stuff, are you interested in the items that are not mechs or ships?

I was trying to come up with a funny sarcasm answer to start off but I can't get it quite right... I honestly think you do an amazing job on your models and the way you mix things up in the polls. You really need to take yourself into account too with this, if you go too far one way do you think you might start to feel burned out or lose your enthusiasm if it's too much of something you don't enjoy as much? A couple of side notes here: A) if you were to offer up digital hard drives for sale that just "accidentally" had the old stuff that went away I'd totally be down to buy one and 2) as much as I wanted the Manta to win I can't wait to see what you do with the diorama!

Jamie Atkinson

I more meant I was interested in standard fantasy characters and whatnot, which I feel he used to do a lot more of. I know it's once every three months, but still, that's once every three months! I've stayed subscribed all this time during months I wasn't interested in because the value is so good, but it's just not something I can justify anymore

Kimberly

Maybe a suggestion could be to have a Small, medium, and large model to be voted on to help get the smaller squads and such in the mix.

KozyWarmDepression

I'm gonna be completely honest, I actually planned on unsubscribing before the end of the month. I feel like you offer a wonderful value, and incredibly high quality sculpts! However, the fact that it's drifted more and more towards Grimdark, mechs and ships is just not something I'm interested in... At all. I've been subscribed since March of 2020, and I think it's just time for me to call it quits. I don't have an answer to your questions, about how to bring in more patrons, but the fact that you're asking this about doing even MORE Grimdark tells me I'm making the right choice here. No hard feelings, you're one of the most talented model makers around, and the value for money spent is absolutely crazy. But it's just going a direction I'm not interested in. I'm sure I'm in the minority, and might even get some hate for this, but since you're asking, I thought I might as well make my feelings on it heard. Thanks for all the wonderful models!

Kimberly

Personally I found you through a friend. They turned me to your page through the grimdark dioramas. I do like the variety though that the 3 month releases give switching between the genres. The only thing I’d like if you want to switch up the spaghetti bowl would be to have a split of 30k and 40k. As to specific factions I do kinda like the luck of the draw with community voting. My biggest reason to want to stick around now is just the amazing quality of models that you produce.

KozyWarmDepression

I love the heavy weapons designs, they look absolutely fantastic

David Pereira

I feel that with GW's recent announcement about no new 40K models til 2025 you have a great opportunity to grab the customer base by making designs folks have been asking to be updated for decades now.
