And yeah Mickey was right at the end that those ships had "skeleton crews" so they didn't lose that many people, but still not great to lose those ships and small crews. They actually do have a ship that grows food which they call the Botanical Cruiser. This is why they didn't run out of food in earlier seasons. I think that's the ship they were talking about where all food got tainted for some reason at the beginning of the episode.

In a case like this they really might only have been pilots, navigators, and probably some people to do immediate damage control on the other end.
