I agree. I really don't understand how people see the arguement as forced. They've done long distance before, but not with so much added stress, like 2 kids and an uncertain career move. Especially, with Pam sorta in denial about what Jim succeeding would mean for them. I think there's been signs of cracks in the perfect couples facade, not alot or obvious, but it's been shown.

I mean, I can see a difference in this situation. Pam literally looked at them and asked the question. And we learn later on why the cameraman broke protocol. This is how I see it. It doesn't answer everything, but it's something.

I’m in the minority of people who LOVE seeing the conflict between Jim and Pam. Maybe for the show it gives whiplash, but it’s so realistic it makes my skin itch. Pam has always been a passive character and Jim has always been proactive. That dynamic is more of a nuclear bomb than your average couple who have serious arguments now and again.

Ah god so begins the most pointless and unecessary plotline/story of Season 9. Ugh.

It's not forced because it can't happen lol. It feels forced because the show presented them as the perfect couple for so long and then suddenly this big weighty argument happens. The show didn't do a good job of actually splicing it into the DNA of the story. Nobody got whiplash when we saw how Jan treats Michael in the dinner party episode or when Angela started cheating on Andy. If they had shown more cracks in their relationship or even show them having more serious conflicts once in a while there would probably be less whiplash for this moment.

Yes, and the fire drill when Kevin knocked over one of the camera guys. They did those moments subtly before this season so we may not have noticed. But now they're front and center and it created a different feel to this season. I remember watching it live and being shocked that they were pulling the curtain back.

I don’t know how y’all saying that drama be forced my parents had this exact argument many times smh… the “maybe you should be here” the “im doing this for our family” VIVID FLASHBACK. they divorced since LOL

The Jim & Pam argument sounds so fake lol

As much as this episode is a mess, I think it’s really interesting whenever they break the documentary format. Another moment that comes to mind is then Michael is leaving and takes his mic off and we no longer hear him, or when Michael drives his car into a lake and goes to open the back door for the camera guy to get out too. There’s something about those moments that makes the show feel a little more “real” even though it has gotten wackier and zanier as time has progressed. It’s why I prefer The Office over Parks and Rec. Parks never made the effort to reference the camera crew. Parks has talking heads for comedy, but sort of used the format without ever proving any context or any of those moments I can remember. They sorta copped out of it being a documentary. And just used the format just because the office did as well and had success.

Yeah the whiplash is more pronounced here because they never threaded serious Jim and Pam drama ever. It’s the result of them being portrayed as too perfect of a couple for seasons on end. The previous spats they’ve had were mostly sitcom cutesy conflicts that didn’t really have much weight. The camera man thing is also weird because yeah there’s been serious moments before, but why didn’t they ever interject during previous heavy moments? Dinner Party episode was brought up and Jan was basically abusing Michael lol. Someone would have probably said something when she threw something at the TV and the energy was very tense. There’s other moments too where it’s weird that the camera crew never interrupted. It’s just a wonky season where the show is at the apex of it’s cartooniness but then abruptly splices in this more serious drama.
