I genuinely hope they see this comment for Sunday rundown because I know the whole ‘will they won’t they’ is interesting and exciting, but it feels like they are missing a lot of Melfi’s and Tony’s character

Dante Sparda

The therapy scenes, I'm assuming they're talking talking about the earlier Melfi and Elliot ones, are part of a larger seasonal sub-textual throughline that should become more clear by the time they're at the final stretch of episodes in the season. It's not about where the plot ends up, we know Melfi was always going to go back to seeing Tony. It's adding dimensions to the central idea of the season through a different lens given that her worldview and station in life are so different. Reducing it to pure plot mechanics and a will-they won't they sexual tension is missing a lot in that regard.

What's complicating it (complicating, not justifying) is that Tony legitimately told him no multiple times. Tony says here he knew he had the business and he retroactively slides it into his worldview but had Davey listened or wised up during one of the times Tony tells him no and just leaves, you think he forces Davey into it? We've seen the show enough now to know you're not supposed to always take what characters say at face value, sometimes yes, other times it gets muddled by other information given.

First, Tony told Davey several times to stay away from the game. Davey showed up by himself and then took out more credit when Tony fell asleep. Mind you he was already in debt to Richie. Tony isn’t great but this was mostly on Davey.

To add on to this, the donation he gives to Beansie, he doesn't care about being insensitive or how Beansie feels about the situation, he does it just so he himself feels good about it.

There is no bond stronger than the one between Pat and the villains that he adores. Add Tony Soprano to that list. Bust-outs are evil. I don't care care if it's against your childhood friend or a stranger. Preying on people at their worst moments and ruining their lives (and their families) over money that you don't even need is fucked up. Tony's 'business' is doing fine, he doesn't have to ruin Daveys life. Him being Tonys childhood friend only makes it worse. I also think Daveys gambling addiction is being underplayed here. Yes, people with addictions need to be held responsible for their actions, but people who prey on addicts to make money? They're pucchiacs! Imagine if you found out that someone had a drinking problem and you leveraged that drinking problem to squeeze as much money as you could from them, leaving their family in shambles. Now imagine that person being your childhood friend. Tony is evil, but he's funny so I guess that cancels it out.

This episode and the previous episode with Davey is probably my two favorite episodes in the entire series.

Davey deserves everything he gets in this episode. Its his wife and son who are the victims in all of this. Gambling his sons college money away is a giant piece of shit move. He is lucky Vic stood up to pay for Erics education, even if its not at Georgetown at least he will get a chance to get a degree, no thanks to his father. I 100% agree with Chris here, Tony was childhood friends with this guy, their wives are friends and have coffee mornings and book clubs together and shit and their son and Meadow are friends at school, so this was also a dick move by Tony, but David is an addict and would have eventually found some way to fuck everything up, with or without Tony, I guess. One of the funniest things in this episode is that all throughout you can see Tony and Ritchie's spoils from the store, everyones walking around with picnic coolers, and Artie with his Ramlosa water and they are all unaware that David and his family are the ones paying for it all. Suraj also was spot on with the ending, the symbolism of Tony in his boat overturning that boat in his wake and not even knowing, he is leaving a trail of destruction behind him and doesnt even notice. In terms of Carmela and Vic, look I will never advocate for cheating, especially if you are married, so I am glad it didnt happen between them, but Tony is a serial cheat.....even though two wrongs do not make a right. As soon as Vic spoke to Davey and realised what kind of guy Tony is, there was no way he was going anywhere near Carmela again....it doesnt matter that Tony cheats, he has a medieval outlook, and if he found out anyone touched Carmela sexually they would be whacked without question.....

Tony and crew are absolute pieces of shits who will rob and kill anyone including their childhood friends as long as there’s a a profit in it. The ending really signifies this as Tony is intentionally tipping over smaller boats in his way just for his own amusement, it doesn’t matter to him if what he does will ruin everyone else’s time or life just as long as HE’S happy. Subtlety Tony is becoming more like Livia especially with how petty he gets with AJ. David Chase really starts showing the crews dark side in season 3 and onwards and I can’t wait for your reactions
