The live for this was wild man. Travis (Grog) was going HARD. He was willing to let Grog die in this fight.
It’s worth watching just on its own.

In the discussion (go watch the discussion y’all) Chris asks, “How do curses work in dnd,” when talking about how Grog seemingly got bigger once it was gone.
~~WELLLETMETELLYOUCHRIS~~
DND LORE!: Curses 🤬
In dnd, there’s many forms of magic that can be placed on objects, people, places, etc.
In The Forgotten Realms, the official dnd setting —home to most dnd you’ve seen, including the movie — magic that is placed on a thing is called a “Dweomer.”
If there is an enchanted sword, the sword is enchanted, the magic that enchants it is a Dweomer!
It’s basically the all catching phrase for “the magic on that thing!”
This includes
☠️ CURSES 😈
Curses can be placed in many ways:
- Excessive hate for something overwhelming a wizard and then latching on to something
- A great catastrophe generated by evil leaving the land forever altered.
- 7 evil Litches all combine their strength into a stone for ultimate power but it backfired and sucks ALL their souls into one sentient stone of unfathomable power
- A king of a thriving land is wracked with self loathing and is approached by an evil entity and offers him immortality at the cost of his brother’s life on his wedding day, but the people rally behind the brother and the realm kingdom is forever lost when the king is shot DEAD at the moment of his immorality, thus making him living Death!
… ahem. Go crazy. It’s a curse, do whatever.
They’re mainly very powerful spells and buffs on items with INTENSE horrible side effects that reveal themselves immediately or later.
Because curses are SO powerful, it may actually have been possible for Grog to have killed Umbrasyl in that cave imo.
At the table I remember Travis talking about the swords later saying “damnit, the stats on that thing were INSANE though…” I think he even said Grog would never have parted with it if it didn’t kill his ass in the actual game 😆
In Grog’s instance, the more the sword is neglected blood, the more it rages and tries to taint your mind. Seems pretty easy if you’re a vampire that doesn’t care for human life.
BUT!!! Curses can be broke or even straight up resisted by the wielder. A great monk with perfect clarity of mind like Earthbreaker Gruun could possibly have wielded Kraven Edge and ignored the voice.
But most curses can’t be resisted by those they most effect, as they are often tied to an inherent folly of theirs… Like a tragic play.
But this all begs the question… what cursed item would be YOUR character’s folly?

This was a big one with plenty of moments but…EDITOR: Grog’s kill and the Kaylie reveal with scanlan’s responds gotta go on that Table to Screen list!
So much to unpack but i’ll start with the Kevdak fight. This was an even more grueling battle at the table, a two plus hour encounter in which Vox Machina didnt kill a single herd member, and they tried! The herd had a caster on their side, removed for the animation to smooth things along. The only kill was Grog’s absolutely epic moment which Travis and Laura improvised together, and must be seen to be believed. Travis famously does not share his wife’s dice obsession but his dice are always clutch.
Whats even crazier is that Matt later told the cast that had ANYONE ELSE killed Kevdak, the herd would keep fighting, and they would have likely all died.
We also gotta talk about the Kaylie reveal, and this is builds on what Suraj talked about in the discussion: DnD (and role playing game) is COLLABORATIVE STORYTELLING. This demands trust. This is how much trust Matt and the cast share-
Sam Riegel did not write Kaylie into his backstory. He literally wrote/acted Scanlan to be the “the worst character”. He made Scanlan 69 years old, because….giggity. All the flirting, drinking, joking, Sam knew what he was doing. Matt knew what he was doing too, and introduced Kaylee MONTHS ahead of time (debut ep 37, reveal ep 56, that was about five months). And as we’ll see, Sam just rolls with it, with his character changed forever.

I get that kaylie is hurt but like...Scanlan didn't even know about her. He goes from town to town and has casual sex with consenting adults. She SEDUCED him, tied him up, and pulled a sword on him. She has the PERCEPTION that Scanlan lied to her mom, but if her mom had any ill will towards Scanlan, why would she tell her daughter all about him? She's sad she grew up without a father, which is entirely valid. But she's making up all the things about him that she's angry about. And even if those things were true, what she's doing to him now is WAAAAAY more messed up.
