This has been my favorite episode of the season so far. I love that they return back to the fundamentals as to what the last of us is about, the story of Joel and Ellie. Something that stands out in the show over the game is we never get a specific “I love you” from either Joel and Ellie in the game (though some would argue it wasn’t a necessarily line because we all know the love is there). Joel breaking the news to Ellie about what happened in the hospital on the porch and telling her he did it because he loves her absolutely melted me. Personally I will always love the game more than the show, but I am happy to keep an open mind about the choices and actions the show takes, they still respect the story for what it is

On rewatch, I love Joel going out of his way to remember a birthday cake for Ellie and trying to make every one of her birthdays special. It’s such a nice touch when you remember that he forgot his own birthday cake back in the first episode. Sarah wanted to make her dad’s birthday special, but Joel had to pick up the cake. He forgot because Joel prioritizes his loved ones before himself. With the episode framing Joel & Ellie’s relationship around Ellie’s birthdays, it’s fitting that the three month time skip in Episode 3 means that Ellie went off to Seattle around the time of her birthday. A haunting birthday present that makes for a chilling period on their relationship.

So happy that they included Ellie climbing the dinosaur and the “I’m on a motherfucking dinosaur.” They didn’t have her jump off the dinosaur into the water but I knew that wouldn’t work as well in the show 😂

Love the framing around fatherhood and generational trauma with the scene between Joel and his father. They even showed the watch on his arm just like Joel. It recontexualizes Joel’s character as serving to be the father that he wanted growing up. He didn’t want to repeat the same mistakes. Joel’s entire character is built around acts of service. He structures his entire self-worth on protecting and providing for his family. Shouldering the burden so that no one else has to. If he can’t do that then he internalizes that failure. Going above and beyond for his loved ones is the source of his greatest strength and greatest weakness. Love the callback to “I hope you do better than me” to Ellie. Ellie now has the opportunity to be a “dad” to Dina’s kid. We will be able to see how she grows into “fatherhood” after her experiences with Joel.
