I'm pretty sure that Suraj and Navi can appreciate that the Treaty of Tordesillas was real. I mean, Goa exists for a reason.

This is one of the most well said comments.

43:00 Marketa I know EXACTLY what scene elicits that response

Flux struck sailors often. A lot of the time their main source of fresh water was contaminated.

Due to catastrophic continental wide plagues, bathhouses became hotspots for the bubonic plague and a lot of nasty diseases which made them fall out of fashion. This gave rise to the idea Europeans didn't bathe at all. That's a bit of an exaggeration as they washed themselves regularly (face, hands, etc) and bathed every once in a while, when the water wasn't cold but yeah..... their hygiene was not good. However, bad hygiene is not created equal. There are levels to it in that smelly age of Europe. The reason why John Blackthorne's hygiene routine was specifically bad is due to his profession as a sailor. Sailors of the era would have probably had one set of clothes they could rarely clean for the voyage and they didn't wash or bathe due to limited fresh water available. Even by the European standards of the day, his hygiene is bad. The smell on his ship would have been something awful. Blackthorne will need many baths to get rid of the nastiness on his body.

It was an arrogant and outrageous treaty even by European standards. The other powers were like "WTF?!" Great post, Macs.

I would recommend Justin Marks' short lived political/sci-fi show "Counterpart". Great premise, great acting by JK Simmons and the cast all around.

#SundayRundown Sorry for two Rundown comments on this video. Shoutout to Macs's comment, it is really good. Most cultures besides Christian Europeans washed on a regular basis. Jews and Muslims both have fairly strict ritual purity rules, and most mosques have at least a fountain for washing.

#SundayRundown The Treaty of Tordesilla also excluded the British, French, and Dutch, and was endorsed by the pope because he was Spanish and close allies with Castille and Aragon (Spain).

Suraj is wrong - it's MAR-ee-koh, with MAR rhyming with CAR. Not Muh-REE-koh. They say her name *in the show*. What is it with you guys and mispronouncing names you hear hour after hour? I'm baffled.

Yeah any bathing water would have been sitting for an extended period of time and would deeeeeefinitely lead to dysentery. Good info, homie!

"Unless I win" Is such a ballsy thing to say, Toranaga had to respect Blackthron. Game recognizes game.

The issue of Macau isn't just that they have a base close, but that they have already fermented a revolve and insurrection with Ronin (likely as a way to put pressure on the Japanese to allow their trade).

#SundayRundown #Shogun Suraj, the reason you didn't find much on Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks is because this was their first big production. They're both writers. Kondo is an author, her husband, Marks, is a screenwriter. I read a couple of non-fiction books that she had collaborated on, so it was cool to see her doing this. As for the bathing thing, sanitation was an issue back then in Europe, so bathing was done sparingly, as needed. Too much exposure to the water meant exposing yourself to bacteria and other nastiness that could lead to things like "the flux" (basically dysentery). Meanwhile, even if the Japanese didn't value cleanliness as highly as they did, it wouldn't have mattered, because the water they used came from hot springs, and was therefore naturally sanitized.

The Treaty of Tordesilla, the treaty to carve up the world between the Spanish empire and the Portuguese is 100% accurate, there is a hundred complications but in short Blackthorn is being truthful. Its better in the novel as is always the case but the basics are the same. At this point in world history its the Spanish and the Portuguese who "own" the seas, Blackthorn is a British Pilot and British Pilots(Anjin) were among the best in the world so he's been hired as a Pilot for the Dutch expedition to the Japans with a stolen rutter. A rutter is in short a map/guide of routes and one to the far east is something only the Portuguese have. Until the Dutch stole one. The Hollanders are in a state of rebellion against the Spanish empire. In the novel Toranaga understands this and says basically "you are in rebellion against your rightful ruler their is no excuse for this" to which Blackthorn replies "unless we win" I'm paraphrasing but thats the gist of it.
