#SundayRundown IIRC, the entire 1st season adapts the whole historical fiction novel, and this is the 3rd separate adaptation distributed by FX this time. This show was my #1 live action series last year, and all of the awards and acclaim it won was well-deserved. I remember mentioning this to Suraj after the anjin aired and was saddened it was skipped over. Glad you guys finally got around to it and you can just binge it all.

Protestant crosses don't usually have the corpus (the body) on it; which is the difference between a cross and a crucifix. Crucifixes often have the body on it, and Catholics often use and wear them. Orthodox crosses often have a foot bar. They are aesthetic differences, but they may also be an indicator of something.

#SundayRundown #Shogun SHOOT! I missed the premiere! But I'm still gonna' yap. 😆 Funny you mention "Game Of Thrones", Suraj. That series has “Shogun” dna, because George R.R. Martin was actually inspired by James Clavell's original 1975 novel. FX is the second adaptation, by the way. The first came out in 1980 on NBC. ALL 3 VERSIONS of this story (novel, NBC-series, FX-series) were hugely successful, and they’re all worth experiencing, because they’re each very different.

Here’s a small difference though: In the NBC series, Omi doesn’t pee on Blackthorne’s head, but rather his back. This is because, in the novel, Omi does the same thing, for symbolic reasons, but then, in a scene that was cut from the series, he tells Yabushige what he did, and Yabushige chastises him for not pissing on his head. Thus, in the FX series, they decided to have Omi “go for the head”. 😉 A bigger difference is that, in both the NBC and FX series, Blackthorne’s “piss on your country” line comes off as him having The Caucacity, and getting justly punished for it. In the novel, however, those men spend DAYS in that pit. The reader spends several chapters with them, dealing with unimaginable cruelty that isn’t portrayed in either series. Then, when Blackthorne comes out, Omi tells him - through the interpreter - that he and his men are going to be executed anyway. At that point, you’re kind of on Blackthorne’s side, and “I piss on your country” seems a rather measured response, considering. 😛 EDIT: Oh! Almost forgot. As Marketta said, this is based off real history. Specifically, James Clavell based Toranaga Yoshii off Tokugawa Ieyasu. In fact, Toranaga is SO close to his real-world counterpart that when the novel came out, Japanese people found it hilarious that he even bothered changing the name. Like “Boy, you ain’t slick. We know who this is.”

As for John Blackthorne, he is based on William Adams, a real Englishman who crashed into Japan. I don’t know if you’ve played “Nioh” and it’s sequel, but William Adams is the star of those games. If you don't know the history of those guys...I guess I won't mention what became of them, 'cause spoilers? 🤷🏽‍♂️😅

Great couch line-up for this, btw - all the best

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Yeah, Anjin means pilot, which is funny because it's also the title of the pilot episode!

HELL YES, this show is absolutely incredible. Y'all are in for a TREAT

fr0st

YESS!! IIm sure you guys already know but this shit is about to go SO HARD! First off, Mariko is best girl and secondly, one of the characters dies in the funniest way, its pretty much my favorite death in fiction as a whole.

Another day to look forward to every week now other than Bleach Wednesdays (and sometimes Movies Saturdays, depending on the movie)!

Sickleweed

I wish they woulda shown John was a smart person instead of having him ask for his damn ship every episode

Bob

I think Marketa was thinking of "gaijin", which does mean foreigner.

Also re: second season - The book didn't have a direct follow-up, but seeing as how the book was very specifically based on on real Japanese history, with name changes, they can pull on actual history to keep things going. Very much looking forward to it!

Taishen

From here on out, any time you hear English it isn't actually English. They're speaking Portuguese, but we as the audience hear it as English. It was a stylistic choice that I think makes sense.

Smash Bran'Discootch

You're in for a treat! This show is quality top to bottom. Everything from the Japanese dialect used (from what I've heard, as I don't speak myself), the costumes, sets, and acting is all top tier. I'm not sure I watched a more perfect show last year.

Taishen

fuck yeah...... Never felt this happy since the last Wed when u dropped bleach

OMG YES LET'S GOOO

#SundayRundown "Shogun" was originally a novel by James Clavell released in 1975. It was made into an American television mini-series back in 1980. This show is a new adaptation. James Clavell, author of the novel "Shōgun," drew from real history. Blackthorn (Anjin) is based on a real historical figure - William Adams, a 17th-century English navigator who reached Japan in 1600, the first Englishman to reach that country. When the characters are speaking English in the show it's implied that they are actually conversing in Portuguese.

this is going to be so hard to not spoil, so much, all of it. The real story and the fictional one. It'll be hard to explain where one ends and the other begins, and since there is a 2nd season who knows how far they will go with it? I guess all I can say now is these are all based on real people and real events, but it is historical fiction. Yes Anjin is Pilot, navigator the guy who navigated the ship, arguably even more important then the captain. As you might imagine sailing in unknown waters a "pilot" is the most important person. Also very well educated. A pilot/anjin is a really smart person.

"This is like Black Sails dialog...in Japanese" Marketa's right.

Chaos T

been waiting for this, hope you enjoy its peak story telling

Macs

Now this is unexpected! Great pick
