"Flowers for Algernon" is a famous science fiction short story from the 60s that the author later expanded into a novel. It was adapted for film, Broadway and TV and you still see references to it in shows like The Simpsons and It's Always Sunny. The plot: science develops a way to increase intelligence and, after testing on a mouse named Algernon, a developmentally disabled human volunteers for treatment. It increases his intelligence to genius levels which has both good and bad effects on his life. But the uplift in IQ is only temporary and he reverts to his previous IQ.

that episode is doubly sad for me because I had a friend pass away a few years ago and he would just randomly text me "cavemen or astronauts? out of the blue and no matter what it put a smile on my face.

Ya that sucks :/ I wish WB just renewed it.😠 The only saving grace is that I absolutely love the finale as it is, but do feel a bit robbed of a more fleshed out concept throughout a season 6. Oh well, still love the show ❤️

#Angel Sunday Rundown That was Nina, the girl from the start of season 5 who was bitten by a werewolf and almost eaten alive by those fine-dining weirdos. I'm surprised you guys forgot about her.

David Fury. Not Greenwalt. Greenwalt left the show after Season 3 and was just listed as a Consulting Producer from then on. Whedon wanted an early renewal so the writers could know exactly what to setup for the next season and the actors could have more job security in case they needed to audition for pilots ahead of time. The head of the WB at the time said they didn’t do early renewals and preferred to wait to the end of a season. They just decided to go ahead and cancel it. They ended up regretting that decision after the ratings and reviews for the season came in. They really shot themselves in the foot. It wouldn’t be the WB if they weren’t fucking up somehow.

#Angel Sunday Rundown For contexts sake, I wanted you guys to know that Angel was canceled during the filming of season 5. Specifically, during the filming of season 5 episode 17.. Rumors were that Joss wanted an early renewal by the WB. But apparently the WB didn't want Joss trying to tell them their business and canned the show almost in spite. I also remember reading that another writer (possibly David Greenwalt) mentioned that if Joss didn't try and push so hard for an early renewal, that they were certain they'd have gotten a 6th season.

Carson Cardarella

Woohoo! a couple became canon in a Whedon show! They're gonna be so cute!

Chris K.

"I do NOT have puppet cancer!" Kills me every time :'D

@Brendon Masker The ending was always going to be in the same vein of what the creators wanted. It just wasn’t supposed to end at this time, so they had to figure out a way to rework everything. But the basic takeaway and theme would always be the same.

Ren Davis

to remain positive you just have to stay focused on what really matters, cavemen or astronauts?

It was a few episodes more when they found out the show was cancelled. I think it was episode 17. Can’t remember if it was post-Illyria or during Illyria. I want to say post-Illyria since I read that Acker actually dyed (not exactly hair dye but close enough) her hair for the role then switched to a wig in order to audition for roles without having blue hair. Also after Angel ended, the ratings and reviews were so high that the WB were kicking themselves over cancelling it. David Fury said that the show would have been renewed if not for that meeting between Whedon and that higher-up at the time.

#sundayrundown Angel One of the best episodes of the show. Absolutely hilarious episode. Vampire puppet angel is the best thing ever. "I've got a lot of demon in me" :) Sadly it was around the time of this episode airing that the network announced Angel had been cancelled. Joss had tried to get the network to renew the show early so they could plan future storylines properly but by forcing the networks hand early, they ultimately made the choice to cancel Angel instead of renewing it. I remember when the announcement was made, it was so shocking as the show was having one of its best run of episodes. Most people agree that if Joss didn't try to get the early renewal, they would have likely been picked up as a last minute renewal (which was typical for the show) But ya just worth it to keep in mind for the rest of the season. If you're wondering about certain choices or why certain plots play out like they do, its because this season was never intended to be the last. They were in their prime as a show and had to quickly wrap up storylines in only a handful of episodes before the show ended.

#SundayRundown Such a fun episode. I liked how the element of puppetry was used to create some fun scenarios while also thematically tying into Gunn’s story with his upgrades. He was a puppet just like David Fury’s character. Episode was co-written by Ben Edlund and Joss Whedon and directed by Edlund. Edlund was a staff writer over on Supernatural which Eric Kripke created. In The Boys, another Kripke led show, Mother’s Milk had a shirt on it that said “The TNT Smile Time Hour” that can be seen in the Herogasm episode. For those who are unaware, TNT used to show Angel reruns ALL the time alongside Supernatural. Hell, they still might for all I know 😂 Rana’s favorite Charmed also ran on TNT.

next week :(

What I've heard is they found out when writing episode 19 so Joss and the writers scrapped what they planned for the final 3 episodes and the last two episodes were basically what the major arc of season 6 would have been just cut down to two episodes.

Joe Traupman

My favourite buffyverse episode ever.

Nog

#SundayRundown Alice Dinnean is an American puppeteer, writer and voice actress who works at The Jim Henson Company was heavily involved with this episode.

Eric Zebrowski

I've heard so many different variations about what happened from they found out half way and had to figure out an ending to when joss pulled the renew us or end us and they said ok end that they did what they always would've done for this season just as an end. Not sure if there's any definitive answer out there, not sure if I'd believe it at this point XD

Brendan Masker

This is one of my favorite episodes of Television

Brendan O'Connor

Yes, this is important. This was not the final season, and especially with how incredible it was rolling, I was so excited for more.

Scott

The show didn't know it was ending at the end of this season yet

SpikesEcho

you didn't recognize Nina the werewolf how could you? lol she was only in one ep before this, anyway, you guys probably watched the next 2 after this there is indeed a hole in the world now, so...I'm sorry I am so so sorry, yes that happened. But hey this ep was a laugh a minute wasn't it? good times had by all.

Macs

Is the normies youtube hacked?

Bill Nye

Same; it was required reading for something like my 9th or 10th grade English class, then we watched the movie. That story has stuck with me since and there's been some really good TV to follow that story's blueprint. A specific episode of Stargate: Atlantis comes to mind.

Smash Bran'Discootch

Great book and movie. Read/Watched it in school.

Brendan Masker

#SundayRundown I sadly don't have an entire novel for you this time, nor will I spend an entire post complaining like last time but I still stand on why we fight being good (and i appreciated the 'save himself a headache' line of mine getting paraphrased XD) So Nina is the werewolf from episode...3? I always switch up her and pavayne's episodes. But she's been on the show before lol You mentioned a spike puppet, my mom or brother actually had a 'life sized' plush of a spike version of the puppet, not sure if we still have it I'll have to look. lol Overall this is a great episode (I'd argue this is just as filler as the last one except for the two romances and something else but) it has a lot of laughs and takes the ease off some of the more heavy episodes like damage and the end of your welcome. And yes you were right that was David Fury as Framkin. I always appreciate seeing him and Marti show up in episodes. VERY excited for next week and I hope you guys have a good weekend, hope hunter feels better, and hope your channel stays hack free this time. <3

Brendan Masker

RIGHT? I know its been 11 eps but DANG XD

Brendan Masker

it was very much a 'whoa! ........I mean she right, though' moment XD

Brendan Masker

RA-NA! "...I read a book about this. Knotting was involved." REALLY showing your cards there, sister!

Kim

"Flowers for Algernon" was a book about a developmentally challenged man who was given an experimental procedure that launched his intelligence into the stratosphere. You then experience his decline as over time the procedure begins to reverse. As his intelligence steadily lowers, the author intentionally writes in an increasingly simplistic way. He includes spelling errors, uses shorter words and poor grammar. It's pretty heartbreaking and was a really apt comparison. Also, a simile is a comparison which uses "Like" or "As". A metaphor is just a simile that doesn't use those words and compares two unlike things. An analogy compares things based on their similarities.

Smash Bran'Discootch

All four of you forgot her?!

Scott

Guys, idk if yall saw but I think the Yt got hacked again
