Given Ed would likely keep himself fit and healthy throughout his remaining life. The fact he shaved off parts of his soul/life force as energy to heal himself. He will still be impacted by the years he has lost/used up. So with this fact in mind, it is likely that the quality of the soul is very important in producing a more powerful stone
