About the oath swearing at the end: The aversion Elrond has to this act is probably also informed by his knowledge of history and what the oath of Feanor did to his family and the Noldor. And perhaps some real prescience that not everybody will be able to keep such an oath till the end without inviting tragedy. This whole theme seems influenced by Tolkien's study of and familiarity with Germanic and Norse stories (where obviously much of the inspiration came from) where swearing oaths and then being doomed whether you break or keep them is a recurring theme.
