On Avatar: Casen I think you may have been watching clips from the M.Knight Avatar in a fan trailer, Netflix hasn’t released a trailer that I’m aware of. But yeah that film was reallllllll bad. And they sucked the comedy right out of Aang...and everyone else.

This is probably going up in flames as on first thought it really looks naive to me as well - but if Square looking for an identity for FF is posing such a problem for them, wouldn’t it be best to take the most accepted core universe or even set out from something entirely new, that will be the foundation of FFs world going forward? It might drive away all those that know FF as something else, but wouldn’t it then also establish a new core group. A group that they can rely on supporting the game for the world it is set in and thus in sales. I grew up knowing FF universe as the tale of the crystals and mythical beasts surrounding them. FF7 for me was a universe besides that even if it came waaay before. And to be honest with the time I got to know all the games, I liked that Square didn’t just stick to one universe (creatively speaking). But I see the problem and the power of the brand, which is what FF is to square for me. But they could do these other worlds in some sort of spin off as they already did before and no one would then be mad about it taking the FF brand name in front of the spin off title. Do you think that would work? PS: Well it still leaves choosing a new core though. And thus we’re back at the start...though stuff

Regarding the first question, the only time I personally ever felt this way was with the MMORPG Genre. I used to be an avid player of “RuneScape 2”, back before the update that would turn it into “RuneScape 3” — which came with a graphical overhaul and combat evolution update. I didn’t have any problems with the original combat system and it utterly sucked the life out of the enjoyment I had for that game. I started looking for other MMORPG’s to play at the time that update game out, and I ended up leaving the game all together and after testing the waters with other MMORPG’s I ended up going back to World of Warcraft. It’s the only MMORPG I play these days— but it was that feeling of “this sucks, and if I can’t enjoy this game anymore I’ll find another to fit its role” that I remember clearly. But I’ve never had that experience in any other genre.

You guys brought up a good point regarding the first question when mentioning the increase in development cycles. While I think that was a huge factor, seeing as the question basically theorizes that anger was the emotional motivator I would argue joy/love would have been the more likely emotional motivator during the time where many FF fans feel the series got worse. I think that people who would fit the scenario the question presents would seek out the other titles because they fell in love with RPGs and wanted to see what else the genre offers while waiting for their next fix of FF.

I appreciate you both for answering my question, guys! Happy New Year. :)

Thanks!!!

Really great podcast. Makes me happy to have subscribed here. Also wanted to state that your whole discussion on religion in jrpgs made me understand why Final Fantasy 13's sorry didn't jive with me. Evil gods/defying fate in a sci-fi setting just doesn't feel natural. That said, Happy New Year! Excited to follow your work in 2021

thanks for another nice one, guys. happy new year!

Your points about animated vs live-action adaptation could also be used in regards to the FF pursue of realistic graphics. Most likely that is why those games were more popular and profitable in some cases.

Thanks for Answering my question guys :) . Happy new year.

Thank you Mike and Casen, i really enjoy this type of content.
