If a shounen MC being a Mary sue is something you’re gonna complain about then you shouldn’t be watching older anime period. We know how they used to write characters there’s literally no point in bringing that up

justhereforbleach

Suraj, Chris. Ichigo was joking

Otaku27

I was in kindergarten

Otaku27

Not just skin color. In fact, Japanese kids were (and in many places still are) bullied if their natural hair color wasn't black. Many schools themselves mandated that students with non-black hair would have to dye it black. Tokyo's Board of Education just got rid of that rule last year (along with a few other appearance-based rules that were even weirder and worse).

EmberQuill

Yuzu can sense and feel them but not see and Karin can see them.

Kautuk Nag

I love how ridiculous they find it that indigo gets beaten up for his hair colour when the same thing happens every day in real life because of skin colour.

Andy tee

Didn't know this was a thing until I read the comments. But evidently they are making changes to it. https://www.vice.com/en/article/akv8b8/japan-schools-drop-hair-underwear-colors-rules

Matthew Bankston

Here's a fact about hair color and Japanese schools. Kids are not allowed to dye their hair spmething that isn't their natural hair color. I could be wrong, but I think some schools even require students to have black hair and will force them to dye it. It's that whole conformist idea and "the nail that sticks up gets hammered down" mentality that they have. Foreigners are usually an exception as long as it's their natural hair color, but those who are of mixed Japanese descent with non-black hair color often get bullied and harassed by both teachers and students. The parents have to jump through hoops proving its their natural color to the teachers, and the students sometimes resent them because they feel like "it's no fair that you get a pass for 'breaking' the rules." It's all kinds of fucked up.

Taizen

So are the Dub actors. Especially JYB.

Sheriff Uchiha

I rewatched this series recently because of thousand year blood war ….and I really sad they watch Bleach in dub cuz the original voice actors are really amazing …

Hank yang

My favorite reason I heard for the title is the fact that Kubo is a big Nirvana fan. I mean he has a lot of Nirvana references sprinkled throughout Bleach. Heck, Yasutora Sado is inspired by Chad Channing. I prefer this Nirvana theory since it's way cooler.

Adam Vialpando

Huh... I coulda swore he wanted to call it something, but it was generic, and then called it Bleach without it having any ties or meaning related to the actual show itself. lol

Michael Diaz

Suraj… Just tossing this out there. One of Ichigo’s friends is voiced by Yuri, Sasuke’s voice actor. lol (Actually there’s a lot of Naruto VA’s in this show. You will definitely recognize them. lol Heck, Ichigo, Johnny Yong Bosch, was the voice of Sasori as well as one of the Chunin Exam proctors. One of his sister is the voice of Tails and Sakura. His dad is Endeavor. You’re gonna hear Kankuro’s VA [r.i.p.] soon too. lol)

Michael Diaz

Wrong. https://www.cbr.com/bleach-name-explained/

Douglas Kelley

You're both wrong. He called it Bleach because of how the soul reapers would kill the hollows, thus purifying their spirits, going from dark to light. The creator also thought it sounded cool

Josh Geremia

The show is not called Bleach because of Ichigo’s hair and his hair is orange not white. Kubo was going to call it “black”because the shinigami wore black robes but it was too generic, then “white” but again too generic. He then changed it to Bleach because it’s a reference to the color white.

Douglas Kelley

So I’m sure other people have commented this but in Japan Ichigo’s hair color is associated with delinquents who bleach their hair. That’s actually why the show is called Bleach, because of Ichigo’s hair color.

Annah Suarez-Domit

When I was 12-15 years old, at school we had guys in our school rugby team that was almost 6 ft tall and one of them was a friend that already had a goatee, sooooo.... yeah, there are some kids that are built different lol.

Jinskii

I've watched the entirety of Naruto twice now and only JUST learned this fact from a damn Bleach comment thread lol

iJashin

bruh im convinced surge is always high watching these bro is finding every little thing funny haha

William Pahau

I can’t wait for them to get more into the series and get their reactions it’s going to be prices

Reborn

i was 10 in 93. in 93 i was in 3rd grade. add 4 years (7th grade) that means i was 14 in 7th grade. but i have a "late" birthday so i started school a year late so.....i dont know whats the average age but for me, its 14

rickie woodson

2001 in 7th grade??????? you're a BABY. i was in 11th grade then......when i was in elementary/middle school (cause we all were in the same classes from kindergarten til high school) there were two students in particular that folks always mistook for adults: roxana and my defective clone reginald (taller then me, darker then me, both males with the same first name and VERY similar last names). they were both over 6 ft and stocky. plus chad is mixed race and is playing up a type, the gentle giant. also: have you seen not nary a cw show? 30 year olds playing teens is par for the course lol im used to it. this is very normal

rickie woodson

That is crazy. Good on those parents.

Matthew Bankston

next week i will start the full length watches cause HE will be here

rickie woodson

I have a feeling Chris especially is gonna like Bleach's music.

Shockzz1234

Japan just has low depression rates. When you share a viewpoint that makes Americas far right wing look like normal people you might be the extreme that the OP is talking about. Japans tradition is far closer to fascism than freedom. IMO

Shawn Brink

Yes, more in the rural areas of Japan (like not Toyko) exists bullying bc some1 was born with hair that's not black like everyone else's. There was a court case I read awhile ago where a school was trying to force a girl to dye her hair black when it was naturally a light brown color. The parents actlly fought back against the school, saying their daughter is not going to be made to feel ashamed for the natural color of her hair. Tbh whole thing sounds ridiculous to me but gotta understand it's a different culture and conforming to one another is a big thing to them.

KimKaiRen

This isn't as true as anime makes it seem. There aren't many traditionally minded people in Japan. Most of the depression, anxiety, etc. comes from everyday problems just like in any other country. Japan needs tradition more than ever right now imo.

Ghost_Troupe

In Japan you have lots of extremes because of the rigorous societal norms. You have people who embrace tradition and try hard to fit in being better received, but often suffer from depression and anxiety resultant of the pressure, the ones who reject it and rebel (produce a lot of bizarre behavior cause of the extremes), and the ones who withdraw almost completely from society in denial. We don't see it as much in anime for it being a form of scapism of that reallity, but you definitively can see it through some tropes here and there.

Meia-noite

Well yeah I didn't want to put spoilers here, but it mainly comes down to yhwach, the sternritter, and ichigo. At the end of the day it comes down to preference. We all have different tastes, some people like certain characters and plot choices others don't, it's subjective.

TrixieTurner

I respect this comment even though it didn't really say why they were mid or didn't really go in depth. So it just boils down to preference or taste, which just says " nah bruh trust me it's mid". That's fine, you are entitled to you opinion and have the right to free speech 😉

miruryuu

The new villains were mid, the story went downhill with the fullbring arc and it wasn't even the best to start with, certain developments and character developments were pretty bland. And honestly the style felt lackluster too, which is a shame because that was always the best aspect of bleach.

TrixieTurner

Disappointing in what way? Well, it doesn't really matter because it seems to me your opinion is the one that lacks substance.

miruryuu

Bruh I know about ichigos origins, I read the Manga back in the day so I know how disappointing it is.

TrixieTurner

clearly, you don't know about Ichigo's origins. Yikes. the latest episodes of the tybw literally explains about why he was always OP

miruryuu

Ya'll never seen Mike Tyson in 8th grade?

Anas Ghadfi

yall definitely need to do 2 eps for this lol

Draxis

Yeah ichigo is a pretty big mary sue, but to be fair the reason people watch bleach is almost solely for the spectacle and style not really the substance.

TrixieTurner

It's pretty common for shonen protagonist to be mary sues, but ichigo is one of the biggest for sure.

TrixieTurner

Twice a week please

defnotdai

We need this twice a week with two episodes in every video

Cameron

Being boring is in the definition of a Gary Stu character trait. We later find out why Ichigo is the way he is, he isn’t a Gary Stu because he still has struggles and has to work to his goals throughout the series, Soul Society, Arrancar, Fullbring, and yes TYBW he struggles in all of them. The reason he struggles is because he’s not at their level. That’s a fallacy, Aizen is more of a Mary Sue, Ichigo isn’t untouchable, he still had to work, train, and struggle many instances showcase his character doing so. He’s felt hopelessness and dread, a Mary Sue is flawless Ichigo isn’t, if he was a Mary Sue he wouldn’t have lost in the first place. Lastly a Mary Sue doesn’t need others to help like Urahara did against Aizen and others. Also needed a bunch of other characters to train him. He’s not Kirito

Ichigoat

Uniformity is pretty big in Japan especially within schools and for younger people. While it has begun to change being the odd one out is not a good thing. Most schools have rules against dying hair except cases where it would be getting dyed black

UchihaGene

not being boring has nothing to do with being a Gary Stu/Mary Sue. The dude is an engineered chosen one with traces of all relevant groups of power within him. he is so strong that he is captain level early on in the series subconsciously. the only reason he struggles throughout the entire series with bad guys is that he is a 15-17-year-old fighting beings that have had hundreds/thousands of years to master their abilities while he has had months, weeks, days, and in some instances just mere minutes to master an ability. the fact that a dude with less than 3 years of experience goes toe-to-toe with beings with hundreds or thousands of years of experience and loses but then wins on the rematch shortly afterwards is still a motha fucking Mary Sue/ Gary Stu

Mario Carranza

Yeah and lacking that determination actually gets him in trouble later on

Zen Reacts

No he isn’t, Ichigo always has trouble beating an opponent. He’s not a textbook Gary Stu at all, he has weaknesses shown in each arc, he’s not a boring character, and he’s always determined to win.

Ichigoat

No they aren't. The only real difference is that their school year aligns more closely to the solar year and that middle school is 7th-9th, but the ages line up pretty closely to American schools. High school in Japan is typically equivalent to 10th-12th grade. Most graduate between the ages of 17-19.

SuperSickMedia

Ichigo is 100% a textbook Mary Sue/Gary Stu, throughout the entire series. Anyone who says he isn't is either in denial of that fact, or truly does not know what the original definition of a Mary Sue is.

Abdull Zubair

All anime protagonists is Mary Sues

Calvin Allen

Hopefully with naruto ending, we get 2 episodes of bleach from next week.

Rudra Bhattacharjee

Personally that makes it a lot funnier Random Bullies: check this guy's hair out he's trying to be cool GET HIM!!!

Antonio Bacon

tbh if ichigo is a mary sue so is Naruto

DANIEL PEEDAH

People with orange and yellow hair are usually considered delinquents (especially if it isn't natural and people don't know) infact if you watch other animes you will see that most people in gangs dye their hair for that very reason , to look badass

Kenneth segovia

Also Japanese school years are vastly different from american

Zen Reacts

Well you either havent seen the reat or havent paid attention since his power is explained throughout the entirety of the series

Zen Reacts

Not that anyone cares bit the characters are in 10th grade so actually that was 9th grade Chad back in middle school

Kaylon Lencrerot

I love the karaoke at the end lol

Kristin Dominguez

Time to eat... YOUR SOUL Featured in every preview on Toonami

Michael Jefferson

man i cant wait for this to become twice a week

Unstablebeast

and then he looks even more like a Mary Sue

kosa

Gonna HAVE to do at least OP if not also the EDs ranking of this and naruto

PKKite

Well Ichigo would be categorized as a Gary Stu, but I think he’s just Built Different!!!

Roberto Martinez

Holy shit why did the group singing the outro music make me so happy lmao

Zana

Ichigo looks like a Mary Sue until you get farther in the series
