Shinigami Means Death God, when they were first translating the show to english they were worried people would mistake the characters as gods if they used the direct translation, so they changed it to Soul Reaper (Grim Reaper) instead because it better explains what they are and what they do.

The worst non-anime community right now is the Star Wars community and they usually get into the same type of stupid arguments the anime gets into. Still...the anime community argues over dumbest things in entertainment so they rate very high on the bad entertainment community's for me. In the mean time Ichigo's sisters are Karin and Yuzu And Shinigami is literally "Death God", the dub just makes the choice to say Soul Reaper (I have a few guesses why but the only one that's not kinda spoilery is that it's because they look and act very human so they didn' want to undermine the word "God" by overly using it from the very beginning of a long running show)

2022-12-14 22:57:10 +0000 UTCi totally forgot i own the whole series and was going to do a rewatch as i never finished it. got busy with work and life and so i missed a lot of stuff and when i went back to it there was this whole "bount" arc going on so i was made confused with all the new characters. now i have an excuse to actually start the rewatch. waiting for some big events for the full lengths. orihime and my bae uryu are the GOATS of the series.

"Soul Reaper" is the English translation of Shinigami for this series. Notice I said for "this series" because they word is used in other anime, but does not always have the same translation/western interpretation. The word "Shinigami" literally means "Death God" in Japanese, and in Japanese folklore and religion they are the personification of death, grim reaper, or supernatural entities that invite humans towards death. Also, as stated, the word Shinigami pops up a lot in other animes most notably Death Note but also Soul Eater, Yu Yu Hakusho, and others.
