Erwin did so much and is one of my favourite characters, but at the end of the day, he even self admitted that his motives are purely selfish and he would sacrifice humanity to achieve his own personal goals. Armin legitimately wants a better future for humanity, dreaming of the sea and mountains. Eren mentions that he was in despair, and it was Armin's dreams and positivity that snaps him out of it. It's true that Erwin has more experience and is a leader who can rally the troops, but it's this other side of Armin that Erwin never had that they need to utilise to get the future they dream of. Besides, most people say that Armin is incredibly smart, like Erwin. If he is in Erwin's league now, while he is still young and growing, imagine how much further he can go. He is improving every day and is already (or at the very least, almost) on par with Erwin, who has peaked.

@Sean Being younger is not why Levi chose Armin. Even if they were the exact same age, he still would have chose Armin.

Also a term that they are completely unaware of yet wont affect them, I heard the words Marley and Eldia before I knew what they meant and it didnt affect my watching experience.
