Yeah, Xander is a character I always struggle with. I like him sometimes, but his possessive, unhealthy attitude to Buffy and the jealousy that she didn’t like him romantically always comes out in such a toxic way. Sure, Buffy is biased when it comes to Angel, but so is Xander in a far stranger way. If anyone had a right to be against doing the spell it’d be Giles.

that ending hits everytime. and no that is not a vampire power but a dru power. you will see more next ep. some vamps are standard and some have special powers like dru and the master, but most just standard super strong monsters like spike and angel

I would dispute S2 plays in the "shallow end of the pool" - it's more emotionally intense than pretty much any other season aside from S5 imo.

Thanks Suraj for pointing out how deep Buffy can get. Honestly, I was one of those disappointed with the couch's 'Passion' reaction. Buffy's confrontation to Giles always makes me teary & so I appreciate the acknowledgement of the feels .. I wouldn't say the complaints of that episode were just for the sake of complaining. From my perspective, they were more a hip check to say, 'hey! time to pay attention to a significant tone change coming in the series!' And as I can see from this ep, you're all starting to really feel the high stakes and emotion, not just the camp, which is awesome. ❤

I always read the 'deja vu' moment as the show hinting at buffy/the slayers occasional prophetic ability. Buffy doesnt exactly know the ins and outs of this ability so confuses it for deja vu

Regarding that scene with Angel in the car it needs to be direct sunlight to affect vampires, also it takes them longer to set on fire if they are important to the story.

Suraj, no one had an inkling that BtVS could get that deep - until it did. And, believe it or not, S2 is still playing in the shallow end of the pool compared to later seasons. Regarding the group's reactions, all of you would be reacting differently if you were watching it solo - it's crowd psychology or even the Hawthorne Effect. Would you watch it differently if by yourself? Undoubtedly. I don't think the complaining commenters are necessarily being selfish - I feel they just want you all to get out of the show what they do. We all wish our friends loved BtVS like we do. But you (all) do you (all).

I am loving your reactions and appreciate all your commentary. As mentioned, Buffy does have some prophetic abilities, mostly in her dreams. We saw this in the pilot when she dreamed of the master and in season 2 when she dreamed about Drusilla killing Angel (symbolizing the loss of Angel to Angelus) and when she dreamed about Mrs. Calendar knowing about Angel’s curse.

Great reaction as always! Fun fact: That scene where Buffy met her first Watcher and found out about being the Slayer - that’s the extremely abbreviated canon version of the Buffy movie starring Kristy Swanson as Buffy and Donald Sutherland as her first Watcher Merrick. Luke Perry and Rutger Hauer are also in the movie. I hated it lmao. That movie was why I hated the idea of a Buffy series when it was first announced. I refused to watch season 1. I accidentally landed on the show one day when nothing was on TV. Watched almost half the episode before realizing it was the Buffy show I was boycotting lol. It was the first episode with Spike and Dru. Two weeks and two episodes later, I was hooked lol. Show is FAR better than the movie. Anyhow…great reaction but I’ll save my response for part 2!

I think it's weird that people get up in arms with how the entirety of a group is reacting. Maybe a constructive "you might want to rein it in a little." But otherwise, chill the fuck out. I have my frustrations, but I also understand they're having a blast with each other, like anyone else who watched it, especially in a group setting. You'll catch things on rewatches and it'll overall be very gratifying and fun discovering those things.

Don't stress too much about "taking the serious moments seriously". Most of the people complaining about that are ones who have rewatched the show a million times. Obviously when you have context of the full show, certain moments hit different for them, but they forget you guys are first time watchers. When I watched for the first time I didn't comprehend anything meaningful until later seasons, most people don't. Besides, Buffy is meant to be fun and silly. We shouldn't forget one of this season's thesis: a little less prophecy and a little more fun.

Yeah, the 2 part episodes are a bit better when watched as a whole, like the Clone Wars arcs, so it is a bit disappointing… however I still love me some Buffy, watched it when it first aired 20 years ago when I was in college, and love to see others experience the greatness that is BTVS!!! 😍🥰😜

Ahhh I've really been loving rewatching this show through you all!! I totally agree that the balance of campy vs serious is done really well, even in later seasons when they tackle some dark stuff. Also, I do think its wild how upset people get in the comments sometimes, especially when the thing theyre complaining about is literally addressed in the discussion (I noticed this a lot in office reactions too?)
