You are right about being mad enough to keep you alive. Dark side users, and specifically the Sith, focus on the physical aspects of the Force. Light side users are more in tune with the spiritual side, and are not as obsessed with physical life. So while it is possible that Qui-Gon could have survived his wound the way Reva and the Grand Inquisitor did, it would have been unnatural to do so. Maul only survived his wounds because of the strength of his rage, as did Vader on Mustafar.
